For a solo creator recording locally, Audacity is a strong free place to start: it runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and can record from a microphone or mixer. For remote interviews, compare services by participant count, separate tracks, recording limits, video needs, and editing tools—not just by whether the plan says “free.”
Choose software for the way you record
Solo recording and editing
Audacity’s FAQ describes it as free desktop software for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with live recording through a microphone or mixer as well as editing and export workflows. It is a practical starting point if you can record at your computer and do not need built-in remote guest capture.
Apple’s creator guidance points beginners in its ecosystem to GarageBand for editing. Choose based on your computer and the workflow you prefer; recording software is not the same thing as podcast hosting or distribution.
Remote interviews
For guests joining remotely, look for separate tracks per speaker, local recording behavior, supported devices, the maximum participant count, and the recording allowance. Also check whether you need video, what resolution is included, whether recordings carry a watermark, and which editing or export features are available. Product feature pages describe vendor claims, not independent comparative test results.

Affordable options at a glance
| Option | Best fit | Free or listed allowance | Details to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audacity | Solo or locally recorded audio | Free desktop software, according to its FAQ | Windows, macOS, and Linux; records from a microphone or mixer. Does not replace a remote interview service or podcast host. |
| GarageBand | Apple users seeking a beginner-oriented editing option | Price not stated in the cited Apple creator guidance | Apple identifies it as an editing option; check current availability and requirements for your device. |
| Zencastr | Remote interviews with separate participant tracks | The vendor advertises unlimited recording time and up to six participants on its free plan | The feature page also advertises browser or phone recording, local recording, and audio up to 48 kHz. Verify current plan terms before relying on them. |
| Riverside Free | Occasional remote recording where video may be useful | $0; one-off two-hour multitrack allowance | The pricing page lists up to 720p video, 44.1 kHz audio, and a watermark on Free. |
| Riverside Standard | Recurring remote sessions within a moderate allowance | $15/month billed annually ($180/year); five hours of multitrack recording per month | Annual billing applies to the stated monthly equivalent; compare video and editing needs as well as hours. |
| Riverside Pro | More monthly multitrack recording time | $24/month billed annually ($288/year); 15 hours of multitrack recording per month | Annual billing applies to the stated monthly equivalent. Riverside lists up to 4K video and no watermark on paid plans. |
Riverside’s listed allowances and prices were visible on its official pricing page on October 3, 2026; pricing and feature packaging can change. Its page also lists higher month-to-month prices and says annual plans discount by up to 21%, so confirm the checkout total and billing cadence before choosing. Zencastr’s plan details above are vendor-advertised features and may also change.
How to compare a remote recording plan’s real cost
- Estimate recording hours per month. Include retakes and setup recordings, not only the final episode length.
- Check whether the allowance recurs. Riverside’s Free plan allowance is one-off, while the listed Standard and Pro allowances recur monthly. A one-time allowance may suit a trial episode but not a regular show.
- Count participants and tracks. Confirm the guest limit and whether each participant receives a separate track, especially if you plan to edit each voice independently.
- Decide whether you need video. Check resolution limits and watermarks if you will publish video. Riverside lists 720p and a watermark on Free, versus up to 4K and no watermark on paid plans.
- Include the publishing step. Recording tools do not necessarily host your podcast or distribute it. Apple explains that hosting providers manage RSS feeds and may offer features such as show submission, chapters, dynamic ads, transcripts, subscription support, or video publishing.
Record a podcast with Audacity
- Connect an input. Use a suitable microphone or mixer. A new microphone is optional, not a requirement if your existing input is adequate.
- Select the input and make a test recording. In Audacity, choose the microphone or mixer as the recording device, record a short sample, and listen back for intelligibility, clipping, or unwanted background noise before recording the full episode.
- Record and edit. Capture the episode, then edit pauses or mistakes and balance the material as needed. Keep an untouched original recording until you have confirmed the edit and export.
- Export to the format your publishing workflow requires. Apple accepts MP3 or AAC for RSS podcast audio. Its guidance gives recommended rates for mono and stereo and distinguishes subscriber-audio specifications from RSS requirements. Check the current Apple audio requirements and your hosting provider’s requirements for codec, sample rate, and channel count. Lower bit rates can introduce audible artifacts.
- Upload through your host or distribution workflow. Verify the published episode from the listener’s side. Your host manages the RSS feed; recording software alone does not necessarily submit or distribute a show.
Export and publishing details that can prevent rework
There is no single export setting that is right for every destination. Match the codec or container, sample rate, and mono or stereo channel count to the host and distribution service you will use. For Apple RSS delivery, MP3 and AAC are accepted; Apple’s separate subscriber-audio requirements should not be confused with RSS specifications or generalized to every distributor. If in doubt, use the current guidance from both Apple and your host rather than exporting at a low bit rate just to reduce file size.

Common problems and fixes
- The recording is silent: Confirm the correct microphone or mixer is selected and connected, then make a brief test recording and inspect the input level.
- Speech sounds distorted or clipped: Lower the input level and record another test. Avoid letting the level peak into clipping.
- A remote plan runs out of recording time: Determine whether its allowance is one-off or monthly and compare it with your expected recording hours. Do not assume an unused one-time allowance replenishes.
- Guests appear on one mixed track: Confirm separate-track recording is enabled and included in the selected plan before the session begins; separate tracks make it easier to edit each speaker independently.
- The video export is unsuitable for publishing: Check the plan’s resolution limit and watermark terms before recording, and verify the deliverable against the platform where you intend to publish.
- The exported audio is rejected or sounds degraded: Match format, sample rate, and channel settings to the host’s current requirements; avoid a lower bit rate than the destination recommends.
