Against the Storm is a single-player dark-fantasy city builder for Windows with a roguelite campaign: each settlement is a temporary expedition, and progress carries back to the Smoldering City for future runs. You can get it from Steam or the Epic Games Store. Steam also lists a downloadable demo, making the base game a sensible first step before buying optional expansions.
Where to download Against the Storm for Windows
Buy or install the game through its official Steam listing or Epic Games Store listing; both list a Windows version. Avoid unofficial download mirrors, torrents and executable links, which do not provide a safe or legitimate substitute for the official storefront.
Prices below were listed in U.S. dollars before discounts when checked on August 16, 2026. Taxes, regional prices and promotions can differ or change.
- Base game: $29.99 on Steam and Epic.
- Steam demo: Steam currently lists a downloadable demo. Epic demo availability is not established here, so check its current product page.
- Steam extras: The listing shows Steam Cloud, achievements, trading cards and Family Sharing.
- Epic extras: The listing shows cloud saves, achievements and Epic Rewards.
A purchase is associated with the storefront account used to buy it. Do not assume ownership, DLC entitlements, achievements or saves transfer between Steam and Epic; choose the library where you want to keep the game. Cloud-save features are listed by each store, but they do not establish cross-store synchronization.

Both stores listed the base game at $29.99 before discounts on August 16, 2026. Sales may make either the cheaper choice on another date. Steam exposes a dedicated DLC catalog; Epic lists add-ons on the product page. Neither listing establishes that purchases or saves carry between storefronts.

Windows system requirements
The official Steam page lists these Windows requirements. They are compatibility targets, not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth performance on every configuration.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i3-530 dual-core or AMD Phenom II X4 965 | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-Series FX-8320 |
| RAM | 4 GB | 8 GB |
| GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7750 1 GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4 GB or AMD Radeon R9 290X 4 GB |
| DirectX | Version 10 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 5 GB available | 5 GB available |
The listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit; it does not independently guarantee compatibility with every later Windows configuration. The 5 GB figure is the listed game-space requirement, not a total allowance for updates, caches, screenshots or the launcher. Keep some additional free space. Integrated graphics may work if they meet or exceed the listed capability, but that is not guaranteed; if your PC falls below minimum specifications, try the Steam demo rather than assume performance will be acceptable.

It is not a conventional builder in which the aim is to nurture one permanent city indefinitely. You lead a series of settlements in a storm-threatened wilderness. A settlement can fail without ending the campaign: resources, experience and upgrades feed into the persistent Smoldering City, giving later expeditions more options.

Each run combines a strategic world-map choice with a shorter settlement challenge. You pick a location and embark with limited supplies and bonuses, then build around the biome, available resources, species and changing conditions. The main loop is:
- Choose a world-map location and embark with limited starting supplies.
- Gather basics and build production facilities in a variable biome.
- Open forest glades to uncover resources, opportunities, ruins or dangerous events.
- Balance population needs, resolve, hostility and reputation against the Queen’s impatience.
- Complete enough objectives to win, then return to the map with progression for the Smoldering City.
The pressure comes from juggling immediate survival and long-term progress. A settlement does not need to become a sprawling metropolis to succeed; it needs to meet its goals before the situation becomes untenable.
What you build and manage
Species and needs
The base-game descriptions list five species: humans, beavers, lizards, foxes and harpies. Their housing, food and luxury preferences, strengths and resolve behavior differ. The species in a settlement affect both morale and production, so adapt your plan to the population you have instead of following a universal build order.
Biomes, blueprints and changing conditions
Official store pages describe six biomes and hundreds of gameplay modifiers. Resources, weather, traders, available blueprints, perks, glade contents and world-map conditions all affect what is practical. A strong opening in one biome may be a poor fit elsewhere. Blueprints and cornerstones are choices to shape a particular run, not a fixed tech tree that guarantees the same path each time.
Production chains, trade and glades
Think in chains: a raw resource becomes a processed ingredient, then a finished good that can support survival, resolve or reputation. Food and fuel are immediate needs; tools, building materials, raincoats, ale, pies, luxury goods and trade goods become useful as the settlement develops. A building matters when its recipes match available ingredients and its output solves a real bottleneck.

- QUICK LOOK: Call to Adven Stormlight Archive Deluxe is a board game from Brotherwise Games for 1 to 4 players, ages 13 and up.
Glades are a source of both opportunity and danger. Opening them can reveal needed resources or an event that demands supplies and time; opening too many too quickly can add hostility and expose the settlement to more problems than it can handle. Open forest deliberately, based on workers, supplies, fuel, event materials, resolve and the time left before the storm.
Traders can patch a short-term gap, but should not replace a functioning economy. Preserve some amber or trade goods, compare the value of a purchase with other uses for scarce currency, and avoid selling a resource you need to survive the next storm. Exact prices and trader behavior can change with patches.
Beginner tips for your first settlements
Pause to make decisions
The game rewards planning more than uninterrupted speed. Pause to consider a blueprint or cornerstone, inspect a newly opened glade, prepare for a dangerous event or approaching storm, change a recipe, or respond when a species nears a resolve threshold.
Stabilize essentials before expanding
Establish a workable source of building resources and fuel, reliable food and shelter, then plan for the next weather cycle and for resolve. Avoid committing all early labor to advanced infrastructure before the basics are secure.
Choose buildings to fit the settlement
Blueprints are limited strategic choices. Before selecting or constructing a building, check whether its recipes use resources you can obtain, whether you have enough workers, whether the output addresses a real shortage and whether construction costs will disrupt production. A simpler recipe can be more useful than a seemingly superior building that consumes scarce inputs.

- Out of Line is a whole new way to play Cards Against Humanity: figure out how your friends ranked white cards along 100 ridiculous spectrums, from "Good in B—" to "Bad in B—." A fresh twist on the card game you already own.
- Play it on its own with the 150 spicy new white cards inside, or shuffle in any Cards Against Humanity white cards you already have and see them in a whole new way. Works as a standalone game or an expansion.
- Team up against the "Forces of Chaos" and race to get everyone's cards into the right order. You'll quickly learn which of your friends are absolute weirdos. For 4 or more players, ages 17+.
- A funny gift for adults and a go-to for game night, parties, and anyone who's played the original card game to death.
- The line cards boast an impressive 8.5 inches of length.
Watch workers and the supply chain
If production stalls, check worker counts, recipe priorities, ingredient supplies, storage capacity, hauler behavior and whether an upstream building is holding up the chain. Idle workers, too many workers assigned to one building or more production sites than the settlement can supply all waste capacity. Hauler management changed with update 1.10, so older guides may not match the current interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteManage resolve as a timing problem
Resolve is not just a permanent happiness score. You can often work through a temporary deficit by building toward positive resolve, timing production and services around the storm, meeting species-specific needs and avoiding simultaneous collapses across several species. Reputation goals can help keep a run ahead of the Queen’s impatience. Avoid relying on fixed resolve or hostility numbers from older guides; balance can change between updates.
Use the game’s own reference tools
Consult the in-game encyclopedia and tooltips when you need a recipe, mechanic or explanation. Recent updates have expanded the encyclopedia and revised tooltip descriptions, making them more useful than memorizing an external build order that may have gone stale.
Treat a failed run as information
A failed settlement is not the same as a deleted campaign. The roguelite structure is built around repeated expeditions and persistent progression; learning when a settlement is no longer viable is part of understanding the game, not proof that the whole run was wasted.

The base game stands on its own, and DLC is optional. The following Steam prices were listed on August 16, 2026, before discounts; regional prices, taxes and promotions may differ.
Best Value
- The large number of cards makes the game more diverse, and these cards can be mixed with any other editions
- Age: 17+ years, not for kids
- Suitable for 4+ players and 30-90 mins game time. Let's spend a joyful and laughter-filled time together!
- This game will destroy all your childhood fantasies, you know
- Add to cart, and trust me, these cards have never let anyone down
| Product | Listed price | What it adds | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base game | $29.99 | Core settlement and roguelite campaign | New players; start here |
| Keepers of the Stone | $14.99 | Frogs, biomes, buildings, events and related progression content | Returning players who want more variety |
| Nightwatchers | $14.99 | Bats, biomes, buildings, deeds, events and world-map content | Players already comfortable with the core loop |
| Supporter Pack | $9.99 | Soundtrack, wallpapers, emoji packs and a digital artbook of more than 300 pages | Players seeking bonus digital material, not new gameplay |
Nightwatchers requires the base game on Steam. You can buy the base game first and add DLC later; there is no need to purchase an expansion to learn the core mechanics. A complete bundle may be worthwhile during a sale, but compare its contents and price with the specific items you want on that day.
The Over-Haulers Update 1.10 was announced for July 8, 2026. It adds hauler management, world-map modifiers, Deeds and quality-of-life changes. The developer said future updates are expected to be smaller while the team works on another game in the same universe. That indicates continuing, more limited updates rather than a promised major 2.0 overhaul; check the launcher’s displayed build because hotfixes may follow. Read the developer’s update announcement.
Troubleshooting downloads, performance and saves
The game will not install
- Confirm that you are signed into the account that owns the game and that you selected the intended full game or demo.
- Check for free disk space beyond the listed 5 GB, and confirm the selected drive is available and functioning.
- Install launcher updates and check that Windows permissions are not preventing installation.
- If security software blocked a file, review its alert and verify the game came from the official storefront. Do not disable protection permanently; only consider a temporary, controlled exception if you understand what was blocked.
The game launches but performs poorly
- Close overlays and unnecessary background applications.
- Update graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
- Use the launcher’s file-verification option.
- Lower resolution and graphics settings.
- On a laptop, confirm the game is using the dedicated GPU if one is installed.
- Compare your hardware with the recommended specifications, not only the minimum.
- Try a new settlement to see whether the issue affects the game generally or only a particular save or settlement state.
For Steam-specific technical help, use the official Steam support page.
A save or settlement will not load
In the notes for version 1.9.4, the developer warned that a rare fix could invalidate a particular ongoing settlement and return the player to the world map. The notes said affected players could contact support and provide the save folder at %userprofile%appdatalocallowEremite Games. This is a historical, version-specific edge case, not a routine installation step; consult the official announcement history for context.

Updates can revise the interface, tooltips, recipes, balance, trader behavior and event details. Hauler controls also changed in 1.10. Treat old build orders as general principles rather than immutable instructions, and check current in-game tooltips and the official announcements for version-specific changes.
Is Against the Storm worth downloading?
It is a strong fit if you enjoy strategy, adapting production to changing constraints and replayable settlement runs with persistent campaign progress. It is a weaker fit if you want one enormous, permanent, low-pressure city or multiplayer. For most first-time players, the base game—ideally tried through Steam’s listed demo—is the clearest way to find out whether its expedition-based city building suits you; the expansions can wait until you know you want more.
