Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition players did report crashes after Update 99311, released December 11, 2023. The clearest answer came from World’s Edge: its later Hotfix 99404 notes say, “Fixed a crash introduced with Update 99311.” That confirms a documented fix for a crash introduced by the update, but it does not establish that every player report had the same cause—or that a crash happening now is the same issue.

What happened after Update 99311?

Update 99311 was released on December 11, 2023. Its release notes included stability and performance fixes and warned that custom mods might not be compatible with the new update. The notes advised disabling installed mods if launch or gameplay problems occurred, and described validation that could detect unreadable or corrupted mod sprite files and disable the offending mod. Read the Update 99311 notes.

In the same official update page, the Hotfix 99404 section states: “Fixed a crash introduced with Update 99311.” This is the strongest confirmation that the build introduced a crash and that the developer later fixed it. The note does not explain the technical cause or say that this one defect accounted for every crash players experienced.

What players reported

A Steam-on-Windows 10 community bug report identified build #99311 and described random, frequent crashes in solo play. Replies included accounts of crashes during matches, with some players reporting failures after roughly 20–40 minutes. Those posts are individual experiences, not a controlled diagnosis or a measure of how many players were affected. View the community bug report.

  • One of the most beloved strategy games ever made is now available on Xbox consoles, Game Pass, PC, and Cloud for Xbox.
  • Optimized for playing with a controller plus new tutorials to get you into the fun quickly.
  • Over 200 hours of gameplay across 1,000 years of human history.
  • Play from the comfort of your living room with a controller or keyboard and mouse on the best screen in your house, or on your PC.
  • Head online to challenge other players with 35 different civilizations in your quest for world domination throughout the ages.

That distinction matters: the official hotfix confirms a crash introduced by the update, while the forum accounts cannot establish that every reported symptom shared that bug or that the same cause applies to a crash on a current build.

How to tell whether a crash happening now is the same issue

Start by recording the details that separate a historical build-specific problem from a present-day fault:

Age of Empires III
  • Start out playing as the British and begin with a solid economy, or lead the French into an easy alliance with Native Americans - 8 total civilizations to choose from
  • Work with Native Americans to your tactical advantage, for the first time ever
  • Develop your own Home City, and customize it make it wealthier and more powerful as you take over Europe
  • Explore the New World and create colonies while seeking out new resources and making alliances with the Native Americans
  • Recover buried treasure from the Caribbean, hunt bison on the Great Plains, compete for trade routes and fortify the coast of New England
  • Build: Check the installed game version and whether it is still build 99311 or a later update.
  • Platform and storefront: Note whether you are on Windows, Mac, Xbox, or PlayStation, and whether the PC version is from Steam or Microsoft Store.
  • Timing: Record whether the game crashes on launch, when starting a match, or during play.
  • Mods and drivers: Note whether mods are installed and whether graphics drivers have recently changed or are out of date.

These details help narrow troubleshooting; none, by itself, proves the cause.

Troubleshooting a current crash

Age of Empires Support’s guidance, updated May 28, 2026, covers several platforms and possible causes. Treat these as steps to investigate, not guaranteed fixes for every crash. See the official crash troubleshooting guide.

For Windows PC

  • Check for pending Windows updates and confirm that the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements.
  • Update the display driver. Support specifically notes that some Intel graphics drivers can cause gameplay crashes.
  • Check that antivirus software is not blocking the game; add it to the allowlist if appropriate.
  • If you use Microsoft Store, check Gaming Services.
  • If you use Steam, verify the game’s file integrity through Steam.
  • If mods are installed, disable them to check whether the issue changes. The 99311 release notes specifically warned that custom mods might not be compatible with that update.

If the crash persists

Support also suggests launching the Steam executable directly to capture an error message, disconnecting additional monitors as a diagnostic, checking available disk space, moving the app, or reinstalling when appropriate. These are troubleshooting options, not proof that any one of them addresses the 99311 defect.

If the problem remains, contact Age of Empires Support and include when the crash happens, your platform and game build, a DxDiag report, and crash logs. That information lets support assess your particular failure rather than assuming it matches a historical report.

Later crash fixes are separate from the 99311 hotfix

Update 185872, published September 22, 2026, lists other crash fixes and mitigations, including a post-game statistics screen crash, some crashes associated with the Windows Store version and DLC or campaign scenarios, mod-related crashes, and a mitigation for crashes when starting Skirmish matches. These are version- and condition-specific notes; they do not say the 99311 defect remained open. Read the Update 185872 notes.

The available official guidance focuses on software, platform services, drivers, files, settings, and support diagnostics. It does not establish a need to buy a graphics card, peripheral, repair tool, or other product to fix this historical issue.
