Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition earned a strong launch-era critical reception, with reviewers praising its enduring real-time strategy, expansive content and modernization. The main caveats were specific: some critics noted AI and balance issues, dated elements, or technical and multiplayer concerns. Steam user sentiment is also strongly positive, though it measures a different audience and changes over time.
What did critics think of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition?
Metacritic’s PC critic aggregate is 84/100 from 32 reviews for the game’s 2019 release. Its critic-page breakdown lists 31 positive reviews, one mixed review and no negative reviews. These are launch-era scores, not a new assessment of the game in 2026. Metacritic’s critic reviews provide the individual review listings.
Metacritic separately displays an 8.8/10 user rating from 590 ratings. That is a user-rating measure, not part of the critic aggregate. The game was released on November 14, 2019. Metacritic’s game page lists the release date and user score.
What do players say?
A Steam snapshot captured around October 2026 showed 94% positive English-language reviews among 61,922 reviews. This is a time-sensitive snapshot, not a permanent rating; the Steam review population and percentage can change. It should not be combined with Metacritic’s critic score or user-rating total. Steam’s store page displays its current review information.

What reviewers praise
The strongest recurring case is that the Definitive Edition preserves the strategic foundation that made Age of Empires II endure while refreshing its presentation and making the package more substantial. Metacritic’s review excerpts highlight the gameplay’s longevity, graphical improvements and breadth of content. GameSpew’s November 27, 2019 review described the updates as small enough to preserve the winning formula while bringing it closer to the modern day.
The scope is a particular draw for players who want campaigns as well as skirmishes and online matches. Steam’s current listing describes more than 200 hours of gameplay, over 45 civilizations, online play and three expansions included in its base-game package. These are storefront descriptions, not independently measured playtime or a guarantee of how long any one player will spend in the game.

What are the main criticisms?
AI and balance
Windows Central’s November 12, 2019 review pointed to “some wonky balancing and AI logic” while still calling the game a joy to play. That is a launch-era reviewer’s criticism, not confirmation that the same problems persist in the current version.
Dated mechanics and presentation
Some launch-era criticism held that parts of the visuals and core mechanics felt behind contemporary strategy games. That is the trade-off for a remaster built around a classic design: players seeking a completely reworked RTS may find the underlying experience familiar rather than new.

Technical and multiplayer concerns
Other listed reviews mentioned intermittent lag and a small multiplayer player pool. Those reports are historical and do not establish current network performance or matchmaking conditions. The available review evidence does not independently test today’s multiplayer experience.
Is it worth playing?
It is a strong fit if you want a classic, methodical RTS with a large campaign and civilization roster, and you value refinements that preserve the original game’s identity. It is a less certain fit if your priority is a radically modernized strategy system, or if you are buying mainly for current competitive matchmaking: the cited multiplayer concerns date from launch, and current matchmaking quality is not established by these reviews.

Before buying, verify the platform, package contents and requirements on the storefront you will use. Steam lists Windows and macOS requirements, while the official Age of Empires page gives a different Windows storage requirement; check the live listing for your platform rather than assuming those figures match. The base-game package and separately sold add-ons can also differ by storefront and date. The official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition page presents the game, modes, expansions and updates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is included, and what is separate?
Steam currently describes three expansions as included with its base-game package. That should not be read as meaning every add-on or future release is included. The official page’s older description gives a different civilization count from Steam’s current listing, so those figures reflect descriptions published at different times and should not be treated as a direct comparison. Confirm the contents of the exact package you plan to buy.
The official site also presents CaptureAge as a free tool for owners to inspect game statistics, actions and strategies. It may interest players who want to study competitive play, but the available information does not establish its current feature set or independently assess the tool.
