Its updated presentation, distinct pantheons and useful combat changes make a strong case for returning to the mythic battlefield. One launch-era PC Gamer review awarded it 75, praising the interface and attack-move command while faulting some portraits and campaign voice performances; that is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict.
What kind of remake is Age of Mythology: Retold?
Age of Mythology: Retold launched on September 4, 2024. World’s Edge described its aim as going beyond preservation, adding features and mechanics alongside rebuilt visuals. In an Xbox Wire interview, the developers said the original game’s art had been remade. That is a meaningful distinction from a release focused only on making the old game run on modern hardware.

One of the clearest gameplay changes concerns God Powers. In the original design, a player could hold a one-use power in reserve and reach the end of a match without deploying it. Earnest Yuen of World’s Edge explained that Retold makes God Powers reusable, allowing players to use them strategically more than once. They operate on cooldowns, so the decision shifts from whether to spend a single charge to when a power is most useful.
That change reflects the remake’s larger trade-off: it keeps the recognizable strategy framework while adjusting how some of its defining tools work. A developer’s stated goal is not itself proof that every change succeeds, but PC Gamer’s review found the refreshed interface and combat quality-of-life additions helpful in play.

How does the strategy gameplay work?
Retold is a real-time strategy game about managing an economy, building an army and responding to an opponent’s composition. Players gather food, wood, gold and favor, then spend those resources on units and development. The pace is more measured than in some RTS games, leaving room to make choices about what to build and how to counter enemy forces.
The game draws on four pantheons—Greek, Norse, Egyptian and Atlantean—and their factions offer distinct ways to approach a match. The combat triangle also gives mythological and hero units defined roles: heroes are especially effective against mythological units, while mythological units can be strong against human soldiers. Success depends on matching the right forces to the threat rather than simply producing the largest army.

PC Gamer singled out the attack-move command as a useful improvement. It can help an army advance while engaging nearby enemies instead of blindly marching toward a building as threats attack. The review also noted that units may still wander off when they are not in combat, so the command is helpful rather than a guarantee of perfectly controlled formations.
What does the review get right—and where does it fall short?
PC Gamer awarded Retold a score of 75 in its 2024 review. The reviewer praised the refreshed visuals and clean presentation of units, resources and build options, along with the attack-move command and faction variety. Environments were described as detailed, giving the old strategy formula a clearer modern presentation.

The review’s reservations were more specific than a blanket rejection of the remake. The reviewer found the new character portraits less charming than the originals, and felt that some voice accents detracted from campaign drama and immersion. Those are subjective reactions, not objective defects or a guarantee that every player will feel the same way. The review also dates from launch, so it should not be read as a judgment of every later patch or expansion.

Is Age of Mythology: Retold worth playing?
If you want a mythology-themed RTS with resource management, army composition and several factions to learn, Retold offers more than a cosmetic update: it rebuilds the art and makes notable changes such as reusable, cooldown-based God Powers. PC Gamer’s 75-point launch-era review supports a qualified recommendation, while its criticisms of portraits and voice performances give returning fans concrete reasons to compare the new presentation with their memories of the original.
