The open Age of Mythology: Retold multiplayer stress test is over. It ran on Steam from July 26 to 28, 2024—not this weekend—and the game’s developers said participants did not need to own the game, but they did need to request access. The test only worked during scheduled play windows and ended when the event finished.
Could anyone play the stress test without buying the game?
According to the Age of Empires announcement published July 23, 2024, anyone on Steam could request access from the game’s Steam page, whether or not they had purchased it. The instructions were to select “Request Access”; Steam would confirm access and notify accepted participants. The announcement also said players would be notified as more participants were accepted, so requesting access did not mean admission was guaranteed immediately.
This was temporary access for a multiplayer server stress test, not a free copy of the game. The announcement said access would end when the test finished.
When did the Steam stress test take place?
The test was scheduled for Friday, July 26, Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, July 28, 2024, with limited play windows. Players could only join during those windows. The announcement also offered a pre-download six hours before the first window; its page has the original schedule and time-zone details.

Those dates are historical. The July 2024 announcement does not indicate that another stress test is taking place now.
Which platforms had the stress test?
The 2024 stress test was Steam-only. Its access instructions applied to the game’s Steam page, not to Xbox, PlayStation, or other platforms.

Is the game itself available now?
Age of Mythology: Retold launched on September 4, 2024. The official support FAQ, dated January 20, 2026, lists PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and PlayStation 5, and says cross-play is available across platforms. Availability and purchase options can depend on platform and region.
For PS5, the US PlayStation store page lists a Standard Edition and says PS Plus is required for online play. That subscription detail is specific to the US storefront; check the listing and online-play requirements for your territory.

Was there a later free weekend?
Yes, but it was a separate event—not a continuation of the 2024 stress test. An Age of Empires Support notice published April 15, 2026 says a Free Weekend ran April 23–27, 2026, on Steam, Xbox consoles, and the Microsoft Store, with different start and end times for Steam and for Xbox/Microsoft Store. That event has also ended.
