AI Background Generators for Videos: How to Create a Custom Background

Create a custom video background by prompting an AI replacement tool or removing the original backdrop and compositing a new scene. Compare workflows and fix common artifacts.

You can create a custom background for an existing video either by removing the original backdrop and placing a new image or video behind the subject, or by using an AI tool that replaces the backdrop from a text prompt. You do not necessarily need a green screen. The right method depends on whether you want precise control over the scene or a faster prompt-based replacement.

Choose the right kind of background workflow

“Background generator” can describe two different jobs. A background remover isolates the person or object, leaving you to add a separate background underneath. A prompt-led replacement tool attempts to create and place a new backdrop behind the subject in the video. These approaches are related, but they are not interchangeable.

  • Use removal and compositing when you already have a background image or video, want to control its placement, or need to adjust the subject and backdrop separately.
  • Use prompt-based replacement when you want an AI tool to interpret a written scene description and replace the existing backdrop.
  • Use chroma key when the original footage was shot against a consistent green or blue screen. It is one removal method, not a requirement for every AI workflow.

For any approach, inspect the finished clip over time—not just a still frame. Hair, hands, fast movement, and changing light can reveal edge problems or warping that is easy to miss in a preview.

Replace a backdrop from a prompt with Runway Change Backdrop

Runway’s Change Backdrop app is a direct prompt-led option for existing footage: upload a clip, describe the backdrop, and generate a version with the new scene behind the subject. Runway’s app page states that input video can be up to five seconds and that the app costs 15 credits per second. It also says Apps are available to Standard plan users and above, and that Change Backdrop is available in Unlimited Explore mode without consuming credits while using that mode. Plan access, pricing, and limits can change, so check the current app page before starting.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Prepare a short, clear source clip. Choose well-lit footage with a clearly visible subject. Runway recommends high-quality image or video input to help avoid morphing or artifacts.
  2. Open Change Backdrop at Runway’s Change Backdrop app and upload your video. Confirm that the clip fits the current duration and account requirements.
  3. Describe one specific scene. Keep the prompt direct: name the setting and lighting, rather than combining several unrelated locations or visual effects. For example: “A quiet sunlit home office, soft window light from the left.”
  4. Generate and review the whole result. Look for flickering edges, changes in the subject’s shape, or a background that shifts unnaturally as the subject moves.
  5. Revise the source or prompt if needed. Try a simpler scene description or a clearer source clip if the subject or new backdrop warps. Do not assume one successful-looking frame means the full clip is clean.

Runway also says outputs from its Apps can be chained by downloading one app’s result and uploading that file into another app. That can support a multi-step workflow, but each stage should be checked for new artifacts.

Use Runway Edit Studio for longer or multi-shot footage

Runway describes Edit Studio as a prompt-based experience for transforming existing traditional or generated footage, powered by Aleph 2.0. Its help article lists background removal and replacement among its uses and says it can work across single shots or multi-shot sequences up to 30 seconds. This is a separate workflow from Change Backdrop: do not apply the latter app’s five-second input limit to Edit Studio, or assume Edit Studio has the same interface or plan terms.

For a sequence, describe the change you want and review continuity across every shot. A prompt that fits one camera angle may produce a mismatch when the scene, lighting, or subject position changes.

Remove the background and add your own in CapCut

CapCut’s documented desktop workflow separates subject removal from background choice. After isolating the subject, you can generate a background with its AI image function or choose an asset from its built-in background library. The exact controls and export options can vary by product version and export route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Import the video into CapCut’s desktop editor.
  2. Select the clip, then choose Video > Remove BG > Auto removal. Let the editor isolate the subject.
  3. Add a background beneath the isolated footage. Generate one with the AI image function or choose an image or video from the background library.
  4. Refine the cutout if necessary. CapCut describes custom-removal controls for areas that need adjustment. Check the subject’s outline and movement against the replacement scene.
  5. Export and inspect the result. Review the entire video, and check the export route’s available output settings before rendering.

If the footage was shot against a consistent green or blue screen, CapCut also documents a chroma-key option: choose Video > Remove BG > Chroma key, select the screen color, and refine the result. Chroma key depends on separation between the subject and the background; it is not a magic fix for shadows, similarly colored clothing, or uneven lighting.

Remove a video background in Adobe Express

Adobe’s Express help article, last updated April 28, 2026, documents removing a video background. It does not establish that this removal action generates a replacement scene. You need to add a separate background as a subsequent editing step.

Compare the approaches before you commit

Approach What it does Background source Limits and checks
Runway Change Backdrop Replaces the backdrop through a prompt-led app. Scene described in text. Runway states a five-second maximum input and 15 credits per second; verify current access and usage terms. Inspect motion and edges.
Runway Edit Studio Transforms existing footage with prompts; its help lists background removal and replacement among its uses. Prompted edit. Runway says single shots or multi-shot sequences up to 30 seconds. This is not the same limit as Change Backdrop.
CapCut removal and compositing Isolates a subject, then lets you place a replacement background. AI-generated image, library asset, or your own layer. Desktop steps are documented; controls and export options may vary by version and route. Custom-removal controls can help refine areas.
Adobe Express removal and compositing Removes the video background; the cited help documents removal rather than generation of a new scene. Add a separate background in the editor. Confirm the available compositing and export controls in your version.
Chroma key Removes a selected screen color to isolate the subject. Image, solid color, or video placed behind the cutout. Best suited to consistently lit green- or blue-screen footage; the screen color should contrast with the subject.

CapCut’s own comparison guidance recommends considering ease of use, output quality and resolution, features such as chroma key, and free-tier limits. That is vendor guidance, not an independent quality ranking. No comparative benchmark establishes one of these tools as best for every clip.

Make the result look intentional

  • Match lighting and perspective. A subject lit from the right can look pasted onto a background lit from the left. Choose a scene whose light direction, contrast, and camera angle make sense with the source footage.
  • Keep prompt scenes simple. One location and a clear lighting description are easier to assess than a prompt that asks for several simultaneous changes.
  • Check edges through motion. Inspect hair, fingers, translucent objects, and motion blur at normal playback speed and, where possible, frame by frame.
  • Check the whole sequence. Look for flicker, subject distortion, or a background that changes between frames or shots.
  • Use a separate layer when you need control. Removal plus compositing lets you choose and position the backdrop directly. Prompt-based replacement is convenient, but the generated scene may not match a precise reference.
  • Confirm export behavior. Transparent export and other output controls may depend on the tool, version, or export route. Make sure the result retains the layers or format your next editing step needs.

Common problems and fixes

The subject has a halo or jagged outline

Try a better-lit source with clearer separation between subject and backdrop, then use the tool’s refinement controls if available. For a green- or blue-screen clip, check that the screen is evenly lit and that the chosen key color does not also appear prominently on the subject.

The background or subject warps during movement

Inspect the source for blur, low detail, or complicated motion. For Runway Change Backdrop, Runway specifically recommends high-quality input and simple, direct prompts; try a clearer clip or simplify the scene description, then review the whole output again.

The cutout is clean, but no new scene appears

Removal and replacement are separate steps in workflows such as CapCut’s and Adobe Express’s documented removal process. Add an image, video, or generated background underneath the isolated subject.

The prompt-based app will not accept the clip

Check the current app’s clip-duration and account requirements. Runway’s Change Backdrop page states a five-second maximum input; the separate Edit Studio help page states up to 30 seconds for its described single-shot or multi-shot sequences.

The output looks good in a still but not in playback

Watch the full clip at its intended speed. Look for edge flicker, inconsistent lighting, sudden background changes, and distortions that occur only while the subject moves. If a defect persists, try a simpler background or use removal and manual compositing for more control.
