AirConsole is a specific car-gaming platform, while “built-in infotainment games” is a broader label for any games delivered through a vehicle maker’s app store or infotainment operating system. AirConsole normally puts the game on the car’s display and turns each player’s smartphone into a controller. A built-in game may instead use the touchscreen, a passenger display, another approved input method, or a different game service.
The practical choice depends less on the presence of a touchscreen than on the exact vehicle, model year, infotainment software, app-store catalog, country, connected-service package, and whether the car is parked. Check eligibility at vehicle level before planning a family game session: AirConsole says availability changes by model, operating system, software, infotainment package, subscriptions or licenses, and market.

What the comparison actually means
AirConsole is an application integrated into selected vehicle infotainment systems. The car’s screen runs the game; phones join the session and act as controllers. Pairing usually starts with a QR code shown on the vehicle display or a short connection code entered on a phone. The phone is not merely a remote for menus: in games designed around it, each player can have private information on the handset while the shared action remains on the car screen.

“Built-in infotainment games” has no single technical definition. It can mean a game preinstalled by the manufacturer, an app downloaded from an in-car store, a title supplied by the underlying infotainment platform, or a passenger-screen experience that is available only in certain equipped vehicles. A car with Android-based software, a large touchscreen, or a particular badge is therefore not automatically an AirConsole car.

For an accurate comparison, identify the actual game catalog and input method in the vehicle you will use. Then check whether play is restricted to a parked car, whether a passenger display is approved while moving, and which account, subscription, license, and data connection are required.
AirConsole and built-in games at a glance
| Comparison point | AirConsole | Other built-in infotainment games |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Supported vehicle infotainment display, with phones joining as controllers | Manufacturer app store, infotainment platform, central display, or passenger display, depending on the vehicle |
| Primary controls | Personal smartphones, paired by QR code or displayed connection code; cited instructions do not require a separate console controller or special cable | May use the touchscreen, phones, physical controls, or another platform-specific input; the exact method must be checked in the car |
| Multiplayer design | Many titles are designed for several phones in a shared lobby; the available player count depends on the game | Varies by title and vehicle. Some games are solo or touch-based rather than phone-based multiplayer |
| Installation | AirConsole may be preinstalled or downloaded from the vehicle’s app store | Download and update path depends on the manufacturer or infotainment platform |
| Access requirements | Compatible vehicle software, a phone for each player, and a data connection; some implementations also require a connected-service package, account, or license | May require an app-store account, vehicle account, subscription, license, or data plan; requirements are not standardized |
| Safety behavior | Often parked-only, although a manufacturer may support a carefully limited passenger-display mode | Rules are vehicle- and display-specific; never infer permission from the game’s presence alone |
| Vehicle-specific features | Optional. Volkswagen describes selected games using ambient or ID. Light effects on compatible models | Potentially integrated with lighting, passenger displays, or other vehicle functions, but there is no universal feature set |
This table describes the two categories, not a promise that every AirConsole title or every built-in game supports all of the listed behavior.
How AirConsole works in a car
1. The vehicle provides the shared screen
After AirConsole opens in the infotainment system, the game image and lobby appear on the vehicle display. This makes the center screen a shared board for a group rather than a private phone game.

Players use their own smartphones as controllers. The official instructions describe pairing through a QR code or by entering the code shown in the car into a phone browser or AirConsole app. Because the phones are the controllers, the cited setup does not call for a USB gamepad, Bluetooth console controller, or special cable. Škoda explicitly says no additional hardware is needed for its supported AirConsole use.
3. The session forms a lobby
Players scan or enter the code, choose a nickname, and join the lobby. The first player can then select a game. The precise sequence is illustrated by Volkswagen’s support instructions, but labels and availability can differ by manufacturer implementation.
4. Private phone information can be part of the design
In its announcement of UNO Car Party, AirConsole CEO Anthony Cliquot said that each player can secretly see their own cards on a phone while the infotainment screen shows the shared game. That arrangement is difficult to reproduce with only a shared touchscreen or a single Bluetooth controller. It is a design advantage for card games and other titles that need hidden player information, not a guarantee that every AirConsole game uses private phone screens.
What “built-in” can mean
A built-in game may be supplied by the car maker, listed in an in-car app store, or delivered by the infotainment operating system. Some are available only when the vehicle has a particular display layout or connected-service package. Others may be simple, single-player touch experiences that do not support multiple phones. Since there is no standard definition, compare the actual catalog rather than assuming that “built-in” means preinstalled or that it means AirConsole.

Ask these questions in the vehicle’s current software:
- Is AirConsole listed in the in-car entertainment package or search box?
- Which games are visible in this market and software release?
- Can more than one player join, and what is the input method?
- Does the game run only while parked, or only on an approved passenger display?
- Which account, subscription, license, and data connection must be active?
AirConsole setup: the general procedure
- Park in a permitted location. Follow the vehicle maker’s rule before opening a game. Volkswagen’s published instructions require the vehicle to be parked.
- Open the car’s entertainment search. AirConsole’s support wording tells owners to type “AirConsole” in the car’s entertainment package or search box. If it is not present, look in the vehicle’s official app store rather than installing an unrelated phone app and expecting it to appear on the car screen.
- Install or launch the vehicle app. Some cars ship with AirConsole already available; others require an in-car-store download. Availability is controlled by model, software, package, and country.
- Display the joining code. Open AirConsole and wait for the QR code or connection code to appear on the infotainment screen.
- Pair every player’s phone. Scan the QR code or enter the displayed code in the phone browser or app. Use one phone per participant unless the game specifically says otherwise.
- Set nicknames and confirm the lobby. Make sure every expected player appears before starting. If a phone joins the wrong session, close its browser or app, reopen the displayed code, and pair again.
- Choose the game. The first player selects a title from the catalog available to that car and market. A title shown in a manufacturer announcement may not be licensed or enabled in every vehicle.
- Keep the phone screen awake. Treat each phone as an active controller. Battery-saving, browser-tab suspension, or a dropped data connection can remove a player from the session.
Volkswagen installation and play flow
Volkswagen’s AirConsole support page gives a concrete path. If the app is not preinstalled, install AirConsole Games from the VW In-Car Shop. Open it, scan the QR code displayed in the car, enter a nickname, and let the other players join the lobby. The first player then chooses a game. The support instructions state that the vehicle must be parked for safety: Volkswagen AirConsole setup instructions.
Volkswagen Group’s PAC-MAN Championship Edition announcement described a dated, regional availability list: ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 vehicles from ID. Software 4.0, plus Tayron, Tiguan, Passat, Golf Variant, and Golf from model year 2025, in many European countries. That announcement also says parked play requires a VW ID, an active VW Connect Plus contract, active internet on the smartphone, and a prior download from the In-Car Shop. It is not a worldwide or permanent eligibility guarantee; confirm the current vehicle, software, country, and contract before relying on it: Volkswagen Group’s PAC-MAN announcement.
Volkswagen has also described selected game-specific interaction with ambient lighting and, on compatible ID. models, ID. Light. These effects are optional vehicle integration, not a requirement of AirConsole itself.

Audi’s published flow uses the Audi Application Store. Install AirConsole, connect the phone with the QR code shown on the display, and use the required Audi app-store account and data connection. Audi says its supported experience also requires the smartphone interface and a myAudi account. The June 2025 release names A5, Q5, A6, A6 e-tron, and Q6 e-tron models with Android-based infotainment, but the release date means local availability should be checked again for the exact vehicle: Audi’s AirConsole integration announcement.
Audi is an important safety exception to a blanket “parked only” statement. Audi says certain games can run while moving on the passenger display in equipped cars. Its description says that “the dynamic privacy mode ensures that distracting content is not visible to the driver while the car is moving.” This applies to the approved passenger-screen configuration, not to a driver-visible central screen, and it does not authorize a driver to play. The exact equipment and title eligibility must be confirmed for the vehicle.
AirConsole’s Audi partnership announcement lists Pictionary Car Party, UNO Car Party, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and Overcooked as catalog examples: AirConsole’s Audi partnership announcement. Catalogs can change, so treat these as examples rather than a permanent list.

BMW and MINI compatibility
AirConsole’s current support information lists selected BMW models with BMW Operating System 8.5 plus Service Pack 21, Operating System 9, or Operating System 10. It warns that model, operating system, and country affect availability. BMW Group’s 2024 announcement adds a connected-service qualification: current BMW Operating System 9 models require BMW Digital Premium or the MINI Connected Package, while Operating System 8.5 models require BMW ConnectedDrive Professional. Check the current vehicle-level eligibility rather than matching only the badge or operating-system number: AirConsole’s supported-cars and requirements page.
BMW Group said UNO Car Party launched over the air on August 21, 2024, and described availability in more than 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles. That figure is a historical rollout statement from 2024, not a current fleet count or a promise that every one of those vehicles still has access. The same announcement quotes Stephan Durach, BMW Group’s Senior Vice President Connected Company and Technical Operations, saying that AirConsole and Mattel were helping make in-car gaming a new social experience: BMW Group’s in-car gaming announcement.
Škoda compatibility
Škoda’s AirConsole product page lists Elroq and Enyaq vehicles with software 4 or higher and provides an availability check. Its instructions say players connect phones by QR code and need no extra hardware. Because the page is a vehicle-product listing rather than a universal catalog, use its availability checker for the exact market and software before purchasing or planning a session: Škoda AirConsole information.
Game catalogs and vehicle integration
Published examples show why catalogs must be checked in the car. BMW Group materials identify UNO Car Party and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Volkswagen announced PAC-MAN Championship Edition. Audi’s examples include Pictionary Car Party, UNO Car Party, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and Overcooked. These announcements establish availability in particular integrations and periods, not a universal AirConsole catalog for every vehicle.
Catalog access can depend on a license, connected-service package, software release, or country. A title may be announced for a model family but absent from an individual vehicle because the car has older software, a different infotainment package, or a market-specific restriction. Open the in-car catalog after the software is current; do not use a phone-store listing as proof that the vehicle can run the game.

Some integrations add vehicle effects. Volkswagen describes selected games that interact with ambient or ID. Light systems. Those effects can make the experience feel more integrated, but they do not change the basic AirConsole architecture: the infotainment screen renders the game and phones provide the controls.
Requirements: hardware, accounts, and connectivity
Phone and network
Plan on one compatible smartphone per player and an active data connection. The phone may connect through a browser or the AirConsole app, depending on the implementation. A weak cellular connection, a phone that sleeps aggressively, or a browser tab that is closed can interrupt control even if the vehicle itself remains online.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Vehicle software and app store
The car needs a supported infotainment operating system and software version. App-store access is not interchangeable across brands: Audi uses the Audi Application Store; Volkswagen uses the VW In-Car Shop; other manufacturers expose their own catalogs. An Android-based infotainment system alone does not establish AirConsole compatibility.
Accounts and services
Account requirements vary. Audi identifies an app-store account, smartphone interface, myAudi account, and active data connection. Volkswagen’s PAC-MAN announcement identifies a VW ID and active VW Connect Plus contract for the described parked experience. BMW Group’s announcement identifies BMW Digital Premium or the MINI Connected Package for current Operating System 9 models and BMW ConnectedDrive Professional for Operating System 8.5 models. These are implementation-specific conditions, not a universal AirConsole subscription rule.
Extra controller hardware
The cited official instructions use personal smartphones. Škoda explicitly says no additional hardware is needed for its listed AirConsole use. A separate gamepad might be accepted by some unrelated built-in game, but it is not a stated requirement for the AirConsole integrations described here.
Safety: parked play versus passenger play while moving
Safety rules are controlled by the vehicle maker and display configuration. Volkswagen’s instructions require the vehicle to be parked. Treat that as a hard condition: pull over in a legal, safe location before opening or joining a game.
Audi’s equipped passenger-display system is narrower. Certain games may be available to passengers while the car moves, with dynamic privacy mode intended to keep distracting content from the driver. That does not make central-screen play acceptable in motion, and it does not let the driver operate a phone controller while driving. If the car has no approved passenger display and privacy behavior, assume parked-only use.
Do not generalize one manufacturer’s rule to another model. Even two cars with the same app can differ in screen location, software release, market approval, and motion lockout.
How to verify compatibility before a trip
- Record the exact vehicle identity: model, model year, trim, infotainment package, software version, and country of registration.
- Check the in-car store: search for AirConsole in the vehicle’s entertainment package or search box. Note whether the listing says install, update, subscription, or unavailable.
- Compare the manufacturer’s eligibility page: use the relevant support page and availability checker, not a generic brand page.
- Confirm connected services: verify any VW Connect Plus, BMW Digital Premium, MINI Connected Package, BMW ConnectedDrive Professional, Audi account, or other package named for your implementation.
- Confirm the data path: check that the car and each phone can reach the service in the intended market.
- Test while parked: launch the app, pair one phone, add a second phone, and start a game before carrying a group to the vehicle.
- Check motion restrictions: identify whether the game is locked while moving or limited to an approved passenger display.
If any item is uncertain, ask the manufacturer or dealer to check the VIN, software version, and market. AirConsole specifically frames compatibility as a question about the individual car, not merely the brand.

Troubleshooting common failures
AirConsole does not appear in the car
Verify the vehicle is in a supported market and has the required infotainment software and connected package. Search the car’s entertainment package or official app store, then install pending vehicle updates. If the app is still absent, the model or market may not be eligible; a phone-store installation cannot add the vehicle integration.
The QR code will not pair
Confirm that the phone has internet access, scan the code currently displayed on the car, and avoid reusing an old browser tab from a previous session. If scanning fails, enter the displayed connection code manually. Close and reopen the phone browser or app if it joined an earlier lobby.
A player disappears from the lobby
Keep the phone awake, disable temporary battery restrictions for the browser or game app, and reconnect through the current QR code. A lost cellular connection or suspended browser tab can drop the controller while the vehicle screen continues to show the game.

Catalog rights vary by vehicle, country, software, and connected-service package. Check the in-car catalog rather than relying on an announcement for another model or date. An announced title may have been a rollout example, not a permanent global entitlement.
The game is blocked while driving
That may be intentional. Follow the vehicle’s parked-only rule. Only use an in-motion experience if the manufacturer explicitly supports that title on an equipped passenger display with its approved privacy behavior; never bypass a motion lockout.
Which option fits which use case?
| If your priority is… | Usually favor… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several people sharing a game during a parked stop | AirConsole, if the car is eligible | Each player can bring a phone controller and join a common lobby without a separate gamepad |
| Hidden information for card or party games | AirConsole titles designed for phone screens | Private data can stay on each phone while the vehicle display shows the shared action |
| No phone available for every player | A built-in title with confirmed touchscreen or vehicle-control input | AirConsole’s cited setup assumes personal smartphones |
| Play by a passenger while the vehicle is moving | Only a manufacturer-approved passenger-display implementation | Some Audi-equipped vehicles provide this with dynamic privacy mode; parked-only rules elsewhere still apply |
| Predictable access across countries and model years | Neither category without checking the exact car | Catalogs, licenses, software, packages, and markets change; there is no universal entitlement |
| Vehicle lighting or other branded integration | The specific OEM implementation that documents it | Volkswagen documents selected ambient and ID. Light interactions; this is not a standard AirConsole feature |
What the published rollout numbers do—and do not—show
BMW Group’s 2024 article referred to more than 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles in connection with UNO Car Party. Volkswagen Group’s 2025 announcement referred to over 300,000 Volkswagen vehicles in Europe in the PAC-MAN availability context. Both figures describe historical rollout statements tied to those announcements. They are not independent adoption studies, current installed-base counts, or evidence that every vehicle in the number remains eligible.
No independent comparative statistic establishes that AirConsole games are safer, more popular, or more satisfying than other built-in infotainment games. The meaningful decision variables are the catalog in your car, the number and type of controllers, the screen arrangement, the motion policy, and the access requirements.
Bottom line: verify the car, not the badge
Choose AirConsole when your eligible vehicle exposes it, you have a phone for each player, and you want shared-screen multiplayer with phone-based controls. Choose another built-in game when its title, input method, or passenger-display behavior better fits the car and the people using it. In both cases, compatibility is a vehicle-level question: confirm model, software, country, app-store listing, connected services, account, data connection, and safety restrictions before relying on the feature.
