An airport is a managed transportation facility where passengers connect with airline services, pass through security screening, and access ground transport. Before leaving home, check your airline’s flight updates, your airport’s official information, and the rules for your route; airports, airlines, and government agencies handle different parts of the journey.
What an airport does
An airport is more than its passenger terminal. Its facilities and operations include runways and other airfield infrastructure, safety and operational standards, planning for capacity, and access to passenger services. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) describes its airport programs as covering planning and capacity, infrastructure funding, design and construction standards, safety and operations, and compliance. Those programs do not mean the FAA operates every airport; responsibilities at a particular facility depend on its arrangements.
For a U.S. trip, distinguish the main roles: the airport operator manages the facility, the airline handles your flight and its passenger services, and government agencies have separate aviation-safety and security responsibilities. The FAA’s airport program overview explains its areas of work: FAA airport programs.
What to check before going to the airport
Use current, flight-specific information rather than assuming that a past schedule or a general airport notice still applies. The FAA’s traveler guidance points passengers to flight status, weather, airline updates, and baggage information.

What to expect at U.S. airport security
In the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operates passenger screening checkpoints. Screening is a security function, not an airline service. Procedures and rules vary by country, so TSA guidance should not be treated as a global airport rule.

Carry-on liquids
TSA’s current travel tips describe the U.S. 3-1-1 liquids guidance: containers must hold 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and fit in one clear, quart-size, zip-top bag per passenger. Medically necessary liquids may exceed that amount but are screened separately. Check TSA’s page before travel for current exceptions and details. A clear quart-size bag can help organize toiletries, but buying a particular bag does not guarantee that its contents will be permitted.
Identification
TSA guidance says adult travelers age 18 and over should present a valid U.S. federal- or state-issued photo ID at the checkpoint. A traveler without ID may be subject to identity verification and additional screening. Requirements can change; consult TSA’s current identification guidance before departure rather than relying on an old checklist.

Prepare your carry-on
TSA advises travelers to check which items are permitted or prohibited, organize carry-on baggage, and prepare identification. Its travel tips put the practical point plainly: “Planning ahead and packing properly can facilitate the screening process and ease your travel experience at the airport.” That is useful preparation, not a promise about wait times or a particular screening outcome.

Who to contact when something goes wrong
Start with the organization responsible for the issue. An airline can address flight and airline-service matters; the airport operator can address facility services; and the relevant government agency handles its own functions. For U.S. travelers, TSA reports screening concerns, while airline-consumer complaints go to the Department of Transportation (DOT).
TSA’s travel-tips page says the agency screens more than 2 million passengers each day at nearly 440 airports nationwide. The page does not specify the year for that figure, so it should not be read as a verified count for a particular year.

How to request accessibility assistance
For an accessibility issue involving a U.S. airport, the FAA advises contacting the airport owner or operator, or its ADA/504 coordinator, first. If the airport-access problem remains unresolved, the FAA Airport Disability Compliance Program is the next route. The FAA directs checkpoint-screening concerns to TSA and airline-related complaints to DOT aviation consumer protection.
- Contact the airport owner/operator or its ADA/504 coordinator about access to airport programs, activities, or services.
- If the airport-access issue remains unresolved, contact the FAA Airport Disability Compliance Program.
- For a concern about a security checkpoint, contact TSA; for an airline-related complaint, contact DOT aviation consumer protection.
The FAA page describing this process was last updated January 10, 2023; check it for current contacts and procedures: FAA Airport Disability Compliance Program. TSA also lists assistance information for travelers with disabilities or medical conditions on its travel tips page.
