Airtight Games’ Redmond office was reported closed on July 1, 2014, less than a month after the early-June release of Murdered: Soul Suspect. The studio confirmed the shutdown the next day, but contemporaneous reports do not establish why it closed.
What happened at Airtight Games?
On July 1, 2014, GeekWire reported that Airtight Games’ Redmond headquarters had quietly shut. Its reporter observed office equipment being sold and a sign saying the company was closing its doors. GeekWire described this as the apparent end of the independent studio’s ten-year run. GeekWire’s July 1 report documented those observations while noting that executives had not responded to requests for comment at that point.
The following day, Game Developer reported that Airtight confirmed the shutdown in a farewell message posted to the studio’s official Twitter account. The message read: “Thanks to all of the fans, family, friends and colleagues who supported us and made the last 10 years possible.” Game Developer’s July 2 follow-up is the reported confirmation.
How close was the closure to the game’s release?
Murdered: Soul Suspect, published by Square Enix, released in early June 2014 for Windows PC and consoles. The reported office closure came less than a month later, according to GeekWire. The timing is striking, but it does not by itself explain the studio’s decision or financial position.

Why did Airtight Games close?
The contemporaneous reports cited here do not provide a verified financial or business reason for the shutdown. They establish the timing and the studio’s confirmation, not a causal explanation. In particular, earlier layoffs are documented, but the coverage does not show that they caused the closure.
What happened at the studio earlier in 2014?
GeekWire reported that Airtight laid off 14 employees earlier that year. It also reported that creative director Kim Swift later joined Amazon Game Studios. Around the April layoffs, Airtight executive Jim Deal told IGN that the cuts were a “necessary restructuring”; he said existing projects were on schedule and the studio was seeking partners for future projects. These were management’s statements at the time, not an explanation of the later shutdown. GeekWire’s account does not establish that the layoffs or Swift’s departure caused the closure.
