Akane Critic Reviews: Is This Arcade Slasher Worth Playing?

Akane’s fast one-hit combat and cyberpunk style make a focused arcade challenge, though its single arena and limited variety may wear thin over longer sessions.

Akane is best suited to players who want fast, demanding arcade action in short bursts. Critics praised its pace, cyberpunk style, soundtrack, and repeatable combat loop, but the game’s single arena and limited variety can make longer sessions feel repetitive. The available Metacritic score is a modest 69 from just four PlayStation 4 critic reviews, so it is a small platform-specific sample—not a verdict across every version.

What is Akane?

Akane is a single-player arena arcade slasher from Ludic Studios, set in 2121. Its core challenge is to defeat as many enemies as possible in a one-hit combat loop: a hit can end a run, making quick movement and precise attacks central to survival. Steam’s listing describes one arena, five enemy types, missions that unlock equipment, five equipment categories, and two samurai skills: Dragon Slash and Dragon Slayer. Steam’s game listing also carries an ESRB Mature (17+) label and describes violence, blood, and dismemberment.

What do critics think of Akane?

Metacritic displays a 69 “Mixed or Average” Metascore for the PlayStation 4 critic-review page, based on four reviews dated in 2022. It is a small sample and should not be treated as a cross-platform score. Metacritic’s PS4 critic reviews show the following response:

  • Finger Guns (September 20, 2022) — 80: The outlet praised the arcade loop, calling it “an addictive game play loop that’ll keep you repeatedly fighting through the night.”
  • GameSpew (September 22, 2022) — 70: The review highlighted the game’s accessibility and challenge, while warning that “the feeling of repetition is sure to creep in” during longer play.
  • KeenGamer (October 3, 2022): The review objected to the limited scope, saying that “only one level and (even more bafflingly) only one boss puts a real limit on what the game is capable of becoming.”

Across these excerpts, the attraction is a stylish, quick-to-start arcade challenge; the main drawback is how little the setting and enemy mix change from run to run.

Is Akane repetitive?

It can be, especially if you expect a campaign with changing locations, a broad roster of bosses, or steadily unfolding story content. The Steam listing’s single arena and five enemy types point to a deliberately compact setup, while the cited reviews disagree mainly on how long its action loop stays engaging. Missions and equipment unlocks give players goals to pursue, but they do not remove the underlying repetition critics noted.

That structure may work well for a brief run when you want to improve your performance or tackle another mission. It is a weaker fit if variety and extended progression are what keep you playing.

Is Akane worth playing?

Consider it if you enjoy fast, high-stakes combat, arcade replayability, and a strong cyberpunk presentation—and are comfortable with a narrow arena repeated across attempts. Skip it if you prefer forgiving combat, frequent changes of scenery, or a long campaign with varied encounters. The cited reviews support a short-session recommendation rather than an unqualified endorsement: the same focused loop that gives Akane its immediate appeal also sets a limit on its variety.

Platforms and release-date context

Metacritic lists Akane for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and identifies QubicGames as publisher. Its details page gives an initial release date of May 17, 2019. Steam’s PC listing instead shows September 10, 2018, and names Ludic Studios as publisher. These dates and publisher credits refer to different listings and should not be collapsed into one universal release or publisher claim.
