Against the Storm Reviews: Is the Roguelite City Builder Worth Playing?

Against the Storm is a single-player roguelite city builder built around repeated settlements, changing conditions, and progression carried between expeditions—not one city that grows forever.

Against the Storm is worth considering if you want a strategy game built around adapting to new settlement conditions and carrying progress across repeated runs. It is a city builder, but not one about nurturing a single town indefinitely: settlements are part of expeditions, and the larger campaign advances through persistent upgrades and resources. Steam’s English-language user reviews were strongly positive in the October 2026 storefront snapshot, though those ratings change over time.

What kind of game is Against the Storm?

Against the Storm is a single-player roguelite city builder. You play as the Viceroy, establishing settlements in a fantasy wilderness threatened by storms and developing a network of them for the Smoldering City. The official Steam listing describes a strategy game in which settlement planning and risk management sit at the center of the experience.

The key distinction from a conventional city builder is its expedition loop. A settlement is not simply the next permanent district in one growing metropolis. You build settlements during expeditions; a settlement can fail and end that expedition, while the broader game continues. Resources, upgrades, and experience carry over between expeditions, giving setbacks a place in a longer progression system.

Does Against the Storm have a persistent city?

Not in the usual sense of one continuously expanding city that you maintain throughout the campaign. Settlements are expedition-based, while the Smoldering City is the broader progression focus. That structure suits players who enjoy starting fresh with different circumstances and building toward longer-term advancement. If your main appeal is tending the same city over a long, uninterrupted campaign, this is a meaningful difference to weigh before buying.

What makes each settlement different?

The official listing names five playable species: humans, beavers, lizards, foxes, and harpies. They have different specializations and needs, so a settlement’s success involves more than expanding production. You must respond to competing requirements as conditions change, while storms and the possibility of failure make risk part of the planning.

This gives the game a more pressured, adaptive identity than a relaxed sandbox. Its replayability follows from repeating the settlement-and-expedition cycle with progression carried forward, rather than from one endlessly persistent city. The official feature description supports that structural distinction; it does not establish a particular number of hours of replay value.

What do players think of Against the Storm?

In a Steam storefront snapshot from 2026, approximately 95% of around 19,000 English-language user reviews were positive. The recent-review snapshot was approximately 90% positive from around 300 reviews. These are time-sensitive storefront figures, not fixed scores: review totals and percentages shifted across refreshed results. Check the current Steam listing for the latest numbers.

Those ratings are a strong broad approval signal, but they do not answer whether the game’s structure matches your taste. The most useful question is whether repeated settlements with carryover progression appeal more than a single city that grows continuously. The rating snapshots describe Steam’s English-language reviews, not every player or platform.

Who is Against the Storm best suited to?

  • Consider it if you like city-building systems but want each settlement to involve fresh conditions, distinct species needs, and consequential decisions.
  • It may not be the right fit if you primarily want a low-pressure sandbox or a single city to maintain and expand throughout a long campaign.
  • Expect a run-based strategy structure: an individual settlement can fail, but the expedition and the larger progression are not the same thing; resources, upgrades, and experience carry between expeditions.

This is a fit judgment based on the game’s documented structure, not a claim of firsthand playtesting.

Two related projects have been announced, but neither should be mistaken for a currently available product on the evidence reported here. Steam community results indicated a board-game crowdfunding campaign planned for May 2027; that is a future plan, not a live campaign or a completed product. Separately, PC Gamer reported on 1 July 2026 that Eremite had announced a survival game set in the Against the Storm universe. The project was described as very early, with no known title or release date, and subject to substantial change. PC Gamer’s report provides that dated update.
