alcoholx.dll Missing: Repair Alcohol Software on Windows Safely

alcoholx.dll is missing from your computer, or Windows reports that alcoholx.dll was not found or could not be loaded. These errors usually mean that Alcohol 120% or Alcohol 52% cannot find its own Alcohol virtual device control library.

Do not download this DLL from a random website or copy it into System32. alcoholx.dll is an application file installed with Alcohol Soft software, so the safest repair is to restore the complete Alcohol installation.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose where to start:

  • The error names Alcohol 120% or Alcohol 52%: uninstall the existing Alcohol installation, restart Windows, and reinstall the matching official release.
  • The error began after antivirus activity: check Windows Security protection history before restoring anything.
  • The DLL exists in the Alcohol folder but the program still fails: the missing item may be a dependency, a damaged installation, or an incompatible virtual-drive driver.
  • The error appeared after installing an older Alcohol release on Windows 10 or 11: remove the old release and install the current compatible Alcohol package. Older driver components may not work correctly on newer Windows builds.
  • Another application or game displays the error: identify the executable first. The program may have bundled or invoked Alcohol components, but do not assume Alcohol is required until you inspect the failing application.
  • Several Windows programs also report missing or damaged files: run Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker. These repair Windows components, not normally the Alcohol DLL itself.
  • The problem started immediately after a driver or software installation: consider System Restore after preserving your personal files.

What alcoholx.dll is

alcoholx.dll is a real third-party library associated with Alcohol Soft’s Alcohol 120% and Alcohol 52% optical-disc and virtual-drive software. Alcohol identifies it as the Alcohol virtual device control library.

It is not a Windows system DLL. It is not supplied by Microsoft, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET, and there is no supported reason to place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The file normally belongs beneath the Alcohol installation directory, such as:

C:Program FilesAlcohol SoftAlcohol 120alcoholx.dll

The exact folder can differ by product, installation choice, Windows architecture, and release. Historical Alcohol installations also contain different file versions and sizes, so do not use a version number or file size from another computer as a repair target.

Fix 1: Reinstall Alcohol from its official installer

This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to the Alcohol application rather than to Windows.

1. Confirm which program is failing

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
  4. Note the executable name and the Start in folder.
  5. Select Cancel.

If the target points to Alcohol 120% or Alcohol 52%, continue with the steps below. If it points to another program, repair that program first and do not copy alcoholx.dll into its folder unless the program’s own official installer places it there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove the damaged Alcohol installation

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Alcohol 120% or Alcohol 52%.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  6. Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
  7. Restart Windows, even if the uninstaller does not require it.

On older Windows versions, open Control Panel, select Programs and Features, choose the Alcohol entry, and select Uninstall.

Removing the old installation first matters when a trial edition, retail edition, or older release has left behind conflicting files or virtual-drive components.

3. Install the correct release

Download Alcohol only from Alcohol Soft’s official product download page. The current Alcohol download page distinguishes its current Windows release from a separate retro edition intended for older Windows versions.

  1. Run the official installer.
  2. If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
  3. Keep the default installation folder unless you have a specific reason to change it.
  4. Allow the installer to install its virtual-device component only if you obtained the installer from Alcohol Soft and the release is appropriate for your Windows version.
  5. Restart Windows if setup requests it.
  6. Launch Alcohol from the Start menu.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if Alcohol opens without the alcoholx.dll message and its virtual-drive or disc functions load normally. You can also check the installation folder and confirm that the installer recreated the file there.

If the same message returns immediately, do not fetch a replacement DLL. Continue with the antivirus and compatibility checks below.

Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine an application file. That does not automatically mean the detection is a false positive. A damaged or modified installer can also produce a genuine detection.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Open any item associated with Alcohol, alcoholx.dll, or the Alcohol installation folder.
  7. Read the detection name and affected path.

If the file came from an unofficial installer, a file-sharing package, or a DLL download site, leave it quarantined and remove that software. Scan the computer and reinstall Alcohol from its official installer.

If the file came from a verified Alcohol installation and the detection appears to be an incorrect quarantine, follow your organization’s security policy before restoring it. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the computer if the detection is genuine. Reinstalling from the official source is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.

After reinstalling, launch Alcohol again. If Windows Security quarantines the file a second time, stop restoring it manually and investigate the detection.

Fix 3: Check for a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that alcoholx.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of the DLL’s dependencies.

  1. Open the Alcohol installation folder.
  2. Confirm whether alcoholx.dll is present beside the Alcohol executable.
  3. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  4. Inspect the General and Details tabs.
  5. Check the full error text again.
  6. Open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting Event Viewer.
  7. Expand Windows Logs.
  8. Select Application.
  9. Look for an error at the time Alcohol failed.
  10. Record the application name, faulting module, and any named dependency.

If the error names a separate Microsoft DLL, repair or install that component only from Microsoft. Do not assume that installing a broad collection of runtimes will fix Alcohol.

A complete Alcohol reinstall is still the correct first repair because it restores the application files and the components expected to work together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit, 64-bit, and legacy driver compatibility

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its application DLL must match the application and be installed in the application directory. Windows does not make a random copy in System32 or SysWOW64 compatible.

Check the following:

  • The Alcohol release is intended for your Windows version.
  • You did not install the XP-only or retro package on a modern Windows system.
  • You did not copy alcoholx.dll from another Alcohol release.
  • The file is in the same Alcohol installation directory as the executable that loads it.
  • An older Alcohol virtual-drive or kernel driver is not being blocked by Windows.

To inspect related drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Storage controllers, DVD/CD-ROM drives, and System devices.
  4. Look for an Alcohol virtual device or a device with a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant entry and select Properties.
  6. Check the General tab for a device status message.
  7. Check the Driver tab for the provider and date.
  8. Do not delete an unfamiliar driver unless you have confirmed that it belongs to the obsolete Alcohol installation.
  9. Remove the old Alcohol product through Installed apps or Programs and Features, then restart and install the supported release.

If the application starts but virtual drives do not work, the DLL may no longer be the main issue. The remaining problem is more likely an incompatible legacy driver or virtual-device component.

When you are manually checking multiple device entries and driver versions, it is easy to guess incorrectly about which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show what it identifies, while the full version performs the driver installation; it is optional, and reinstalling Alcohol remains the definitive fix for an Alcohol-owned DLL.

Fix 5: Run Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker

Use this step when other Windows programs also fail, Windows reports broader component corruption, or the Alcohol installer itself will not run correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check for updates again until Windows reports that no further updates are available.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Keep the window open if DISM reports that repair completed successfully.

Run System File Checker

In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test Alcohol again.

DISM and SFC can repair Windows components or loader dependencies, but they will not normally recreate a third-party alcoholx.dll. If the file is absent from the Alcohol folder, reinstall Alcohol after completing these commands.

Running system checks repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and confusing. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the official Alcohol reinstall remains the definitive fix for this application file.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help if the error began immediately after installing Alcohol, a virtual-drive driver, or another system component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or restored.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it can roll back installed programs, drivers, registry settings, and system files. Afterward, reinstall the correct Alcohol release if necessary.

Why you should not copy or register the DLL

Do not copy a downloaded alcoholx.dll into either of these folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

That can create version conflicts and does not restore the Alcohol files, registry settings, virtual-device components, or dependencies that the application expects.

regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An application library may not provide that entry point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run:

regsvr32 alcoholx.dll

unless Alcohol Soft specifically documents registration for the exact release and the error concerns registration. For an ordinary missing or not-found message, reinstall the owning application instead.

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep the Alcohol installer from an official Alcohol Soft source.
  • Remove an older Alcohol edition before installing a different release.
  • Restart Windows when setup requests it, especially after virtual-device changes.
  • Do not restore quarantined files without checking the detection and file origin.
  • Keep Windows and security software updated.
  • Avoid mixing DLLs from different Alcohol releases.
  • Keep a record of the Alcohol version, installation path, and Windows version if the problem returns.

Information to collect if the error persists

Before contacting support or troubleshooting further, record:

  • The complete error message.
  • The executable name shown in the shortcut’s Target field.
  • The Alcohol product and release.
  • The full installation path.
  • Whether alcoholx.dll is present in that folder.
  • Your Windows edition and version.
  • The result of DISM and sfc /scannow.
  • Any Windows Security detection.
  • Relevant Event Viewer details.
  • Whether the failure began after an update, uninstall, backup restore, cleanup, or driver installation.

That information distinguishes a genuinely missing application file from a blocked file, missing dependency, damaged Windows component, or incompatible virtual-drive driver.
