msrd3x40.dll is a genuine Microsoft file, but it is not a modern Windows runtime. It is the 32-bit Microsoft (R) Red ISAM component of the Microsoft Jet database engine, used by older Access, DAO, OLE DB, business, engineering, and database applications.
If Windows says msrd3x40.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is corrupt, do not start by downloading a replacement DLL. The safest repair is usually to repair or reinstall the affected application, then use Windows servicing tools if the Jet component itself is damaged.
What msrd3x40.dll does
Microsoft documentation maps Msrd3x40.dll to the Red ISAM driver used with older Access database formats. ISAM means Indexed Sequential Access Method. In practical terms, the file helps legacy Jet applications read older database structures, including Access 3.0 and related Jet 3.x formats.
The file has these known characteristics:
- Description: Microsoft (R) Red ISAM
- Product: Microsoft (R) Jet
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Architecture: 32-bit, or x86
- Typical role: Supporting older
.mdbdatabases and Jet/DAO applications
It may be used by an old Access database utility, installer, accounting program, laboratory tool, engineering application, or business application. Some versions of Multisim and Ultra Librarian, for instance, have been associated with Jet database errors.

This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, graphics driver, or ordinary hardware driver. Installing those components will normally not replace or repair the Jet database engine.
Microsoft has serviced different Jet versions on different Windows releases. Examples include 4.0.9801.19, 4.0.9756.0, 4.0.9703.0, 4.0.9502.0, and 4.0.6508.0. These versions are not automatically interchangeable, so copying a file from another computer is a poor repair method.
First, identify the program that is failing
Before changing Windows, find the application that displays the error.
Write down:
- The program name and version, if shown.
- Whether the error appears during installation, startup, or when opening a database.
- Whether every program fails or only one.
- Whether the affected application is old 32-bit software.
- Whether the problem began after an uninstall, antivirus alert, cleanup operation, or Windows update.
If only one application fails, repair that application first. If several older Jet-based applications fail, Windows component damage, missing registry configuration, or a compatibility problem becomes more likely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
This is the most likely fix when one legacy application suddenly reports msrd3x40.dll.
An application installer does more than copy DLL files. It may also install Jet or DAO components, create registry entries, register database drivers, and place companion files in the correct application directory. A DLL copied manually does none of that.
Try the Windows repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some desktop programs do not provide an Advanced options repair button. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the vendor installer.
If repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the application using its original installer or a current installer supplied by the software vendor. Restart Windows after uninstalling before reinstalling.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if the application opens without the DLL error and can access the database it previously used. Test the actual database operation, not only the program’s main window.
If the installer itself fails with the same message, continue with the Windows repair steps below. If the application opens but reports unknown database format, skip to the database compatibility section later in this guide.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and cleanup history
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software or cleanup software may have removed a Jet file, an application file, or a registry entry. This is especially plausible if the error appeared immediately after a scan, cleanup operation, or software removal.
Check Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the affected application or Microsoft Jet.
- If a file was quarantined, inspect its path and publisher information before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is msrd3x40.dll. A Microsoft-like filename alone does not prove authenticity. Check that the file came from an expected Windows component location and is identified as Microsoft-signed.
If the file was removed from the application’s installation folder, reinstall the application rather than restoring an unknown copy. If a verified Windows component was quarantined, update Windows Security and use DISM and SFC instead of permanently disabling protection.
How to tell whether this worked
Restart Windows and launch the affected application. If the same file is quarantined again, do not create a permanent exclusion without understanding why. Reinstall the application from its official source and contact the software vendor if its installer is being detected incorrectly.
Fix 3: Install Windows updates, then restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, excluding download time
Jet components have historically been serviced through Windows updates. An application may also depend on fixes for old Access and database formats.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Launch the affected application.
Do not replace a protected Windows DLL with an older copy after an update. Different Windows releases and servicing levels can contain different Jet files, and an older file may create a new compatibility or servicing problem.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if Windows completes updates and the application starts normally. If the program now reports unknown database format, the update may have exposed an old database compatibility problem rather than a missing-file problem. Continue to the dedicated section below.
Fix 4: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use these tools when the file is missing from a Windows component location, Windows reports corruption, or application repair did not restore the component.
Microsoft recommends DISM for repairing the Windows image and SFC for checking protected system files. Run DISM first, then SFC.

Run DISM
Type this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows.
Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files were not detected as corrupt. Continue with application repair and architecture checks.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, check Windows Update, and consider a matching repair source or repair installation.
- DISM fails: Record the error, install pending updates, restart, and run DISM again. Do not download a replacement DLL to work around a failed component repair.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed rarely helps. Outbyte PC Repair can show which system problems need attention when manually comparing SFC and DISM results becomes time-consuming; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are performed by the full version.
Offline repair
If Windows cannot start normally, Microsoft documents an offline repair pattern from Windows Recovery Environment. The drive letter may differ in recovery mode:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:windows
Replace D: with the actual Windows volume. Use this only after confirming the correct drive letter. Applying the command to the wrong volume will not repair the installed Windows system.
Fix 5: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
msrd3x40.dll is a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit Jet component even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components are normally associated with:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →C:WindowsSysWOW64
On 32-bit Windows, the corresponding system location is normally:
C:WindowsSystem32
The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 is used primarily for 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 holds many 32-bit system files.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
To check an application’s architecture, look for an x86 or x64 label in its documentation or installer. Many older applications are 32-bit even when they run on 64-bit Windows.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64, and do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit application directory. Installing a 64-bit database engine does not automatically make a 32-bit Jet application compatible.
The correct fix is to repair or reinstall the affected program’s x86 prerequisites. If the vendor supplies separate x86 and x64 installers, choose x86 for the 32-bit application.
How to tell whether this worked
The program should load its database without a loader error. If it still fails and the file exists in the expected location, the error may refer to a missing dependency, damaged Jet registry configuration, or an incompatible database format.
Fix 6: Repair Jet or DAO registration only when required
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Some older Jet and DAO installations depend on registry entries and registration information in addition to the DLL file. A program may therefore fail even when msrd3x40.dll is visible on disk.
Do not begin by running regsvr32 blindly. Microsoft describes regsvr32 as a tool for DLLs that expose registration entry points. It is not a universal solution for missing runtime files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use registration only when the application vendor’s instructions or a known Jet/DAO repair procedure specifically requires it.
On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit version of regsvr32.exe is normally located here:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe
A vendor-directed command may look like this:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathtomsrd3x40.dll"
Replace the path with the verified path supplied by the application’s repair procedure. Do not register a DLL downloaded from the internet.
If you receive an error such as “entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found,” stop. That result means registration is not appropriate for that file or copy. If registration succeeds but the application still fails, reinstall the application instead of repeatedly registering the DLL.

The application should start and access its database. If it does not, the problem may involve missing Jet registry keys, an incomplete application installation, or a database-format issue. Importing registry files from another computer is unsafe because the entries may not match your Windows architecture or application version.

Fix 7: Check Windows Features without enabling unrelated components
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Windows Features are often suggested for every DLL problem, but msrd3x40.dll is not repaired by randomly enabling .NET, DirectPlay, or other optional features.
You can still inspect the feature list to confirm whether an old application depends on a documented Windows component:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
- Enable a feature only if the affected application’s documentation specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable SMB 1.0/CIFS merely because an old application fails. It is unrelated to the Jet DLL and can weaken the system’s compatibility posture. Similarly, enabling legacy .NET components will not normally restore Microsoft Jet.

A Windows Feature change is relevant only if the application documentation identifies that feature as a requirement and the application starts afterward. Otherwise, return to application repair, DISM/SFC, and architecture checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Update application-specific drivers only when the failure is broader
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A device driver is not the normal cause of a missing Jet DLL. However, an engineering or laboratory application may fail alongside a hardware integration problem, especially after a Windows upgrade.
Do not use Device Manager as the primary repair for msrd3x40.dll. Use it only when the same application also reports a device, adapter, interface, or hardware communication problem.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Do not uninstall a working driver just to address the Jet error.

The related hardware should appear without a warning icon, and the application should communicate with it normally. If the only remaining message is msrd3x40.dll missing, return to the application and Windows component repairs because the driver was not the cause.
Fix 9: Handle “unknown database format” separately
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
An application can mention Jet or fail while opening a database without actually reporting a missing DLL. The message unknown database format usually points to a version or compatibility problem involving the database, Jet, DAO, or the application.
Before changing anything:
- Close the application.
- Make a backup copy of the database file.
- Do not convert the only copy.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Repair or reinstall the application.
- Apply the application vendor’s compatibility update, if one exists.
- Test the backup copy.
Older Access and Jet formats may not be understood by newer database components, and an update can expose an existing compatibility limitation. Microsoft Access Database Engine redistributables are separate products and are not guaranteed replacements for every Jet 4.0 or DAO application.
If the database is business-critical and no compatible installer remains, contact the software vendor. A controlled virtual machine running a supported configuration may be safer than weakening Windows or replacing database files at random.
Why downloading msrd3x40.dll is a bad repair
Random DLL download pages create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- Its version may not match your Windows release.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may not have the required Microsoft signature.
- It may be placed in the wrong directory.
- It will not restore Jet registry entries or companion files.
- It may conceal a damaged application installation.
- It can interfere with future Windows servicing.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair through DISM and SFC, and the original application’s official installer or repair package. Verify a file’s digital signature and location rather than trusting its filename.
Common causes and the appropriate repair

Frequently asked questions
Is msrd3x40.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the 32-bit Microsoft (R) Red ISAM component of Microsoft Jet. A genuine filename does not prove that every copy found on a computer is authentic, so verify the file’s signature and location.
Is msrd3x40.dll part of Windows?
It has shipped as a Windows-serviced Jet component on supported legacy Windows versions, but it is not present on every current Windows installation. It is also not a core 64-bit Windows runtime.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. Those components are unrelated to Microsoft Jet. Install them only when the application reports a separate dependency that specifically requires them.
Should I run regsvr32 msrd3x40.dll?
Not as a default fix. Registration can matter for a particular legacy Jet or DAO repair, but use it only when the application vendor or a documented repair procedure requires it. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit DLL requires the matching 32-bit registration tool.
Why does the error mention a missing DLL when the file exists?
The application may be unable to load a dependency, may be using the wrong architecture, or may lack required Jet registry configuration. The message does not prove that the named file alone is the problem.
Can I copy the file from another Windows computer?
Avoid it. The copy may have a different servicing level, architecture, signature, or dependency set. It may also leave the application’s Jet configuration incomplete.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if the error started after uninstalling another program?
An uninstall may have removed shared Jet or DAO configuration. Repair or reinstall the application that now fails, and avoid importing registry files from another computer.
What if Windows Update caused the problem?
Install all pending cumulative updates and restart. Do not downgrade the DLL manually. If the application reports an old database-format error, follow the vendor’s compatibility guidance and preserve a database backup.
When should I contact the software vendor?
Contact the vendor when the installer is unavailable, the program is business-critical, the database reports an unknown format, the error continues after application repair and Windows servicing, or the program requires a specific Jet/DAO registration procedure. Provide the exact error, Windows architecture, application version, and the results of DISM and SFC.
