Alice: Asylum is not an upcoming released game: it was American McGee’s proposed third entry in the Alice series, and McGee said on April 7, 2023 that the project was over after Electronic Arts responded about funding and/or licensing. The proposal had a 414-page design bible, but it was not an EA-approved game plan.
What happened to Alice: Asylum?
After several weeks of review, EA responded to McGee regarding funding and/or licensing for the proposed game. In his April 7, 2023 announcement, McGee wrote: “Alice had a good run but the dream is over.” His statement is the basis for describing the proposal as ended; it does not disclose EA’s internal reasoning or establish more specific details about its decision. McGee’s announcement and contemporaneous coverage by Insider Gaming document the news.
This was a cancellation of a proposal, not the removal of a released game from sale. The available sources do not establish that Alice: Asylum was released.
What was the Design Bible?
McGee said the team had produced a 414-page Design Bible containing its vision for a third chapter in Alice’s video-game adventures. His February 2023 project page described the document as a sales tool intended to encourage EA stakeholders to greenlight a new AAA Alice game.

- A thoughtful gift for gamers and collectors who want to display favorite game titles in a stylish way. Game disc and game case are not included.
The document was a pitch, not proof that EA had approved or committed to making the game. McGee’s page reproduces the required legal notice: “The Design Bible v1.0 PDF Document, the Patreon, and the Alice: Asylum project are not affiliated with or endorsed by Electronic Arts (EA).”
Was Alice: Asylum supposed to release in 2027?
In a January 11, 2023 post, McGee said 2027 was the expected year for development completion and launch if the project secured funding. That was a conditional target, not a confirmed release date. The later announcement that the proposal was over means 2027 should not be treated as an upcoming release window. McGee’s project page describes the earlier plan.

Is the reported spiritual successor the same game?
No. A March 2026 PC Gamer report described McGee working on a spiritual successor associated with Plushie Dreadfuls. It is a separate project in that report, not evidence that Alice: Asylum resumed. The report also does not establish that the successor is an official Alice game or that it has been released.

What can you play instead?
Alice: Madness Returns is a released earlier game in the series, not Alice: Asylum. EA’s official game page covers Madness Returns, and EA’s 2011 release announcement lists PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. These historical platform details do not establish current store availability.
