Alienware 16 Area-51 and Alienware 18 Area-51 can deliver high-end gaming performance, but “benchmark-crushing” depends on the exact configuration and test. PCWorld measured an average 92 FPS for its Alienware 16 in a Metro Exodus benchmark, topping that review’s comparison group. That is a result from one review setup—not an FPS guarantee for every model or game. The 18-inch version prioritizes a larger, high-refresh display; its RTX 5090 review configuration also showed a major trade-off for unplugged use, lasting under two hours in Notebookcheck’s browsing test.
What the Area-51 benchmark results actually show
The strongest headline result in the available reviews is PCWorld’s Alienware 16 average of 92 FPS in its Metro Exodus benchmark, where it topped the competitors in that review’s comparison group. Treat that as a specific review result, not a promise of 92 FPS in other games, or on every Alienware 16 configuration. The result depends on the review unit, game, resolution, settings, power mode and benchmark method.

Notebookcheck’s tested Alienware 16 with an RTX 5080 performed within a few percentage points of that GPU’s database average in Performance mode. That is useful context for the tested configuration, but it does not establish that the laptop leads competing systems overall. Notebookcheck’s estimates for other configurations are estimates, not hands-on results for each version.

Configuration matters because Dell sells both models with multiple hardware options, while independent reviews test particular units. The specifications below distinguish Dell’s currently displayed US listing from reviewers’ test systems; Dell’s selected configuration and availability can change, so confirm the regional product page when shopping.

How much performance changes with the GPU option
Notebookcheck’s configuration comparisons help explain why one benchmark result should not be applied to every SKU. They are reviewer estimates relative to the tested RTX 5080 Alienware 16 or RTX 5090 Alienware 18, rather than additional direct tests of every configuration.
| Model and comparison | Reviewer estimate | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Alienware 16: Turbo mode versus the RTX 5080 test unit in Performance mode | About 8% higher graphics performance, estimated by Notebookcheck. | Mode-based estimate; not a new direct test result for all games. |
| Alienware 16: RTX 5090 option versus the RTX 5080 test unit | Up to 10% higher graphics performance, estimated by Notebookcheck. | Configuration estimate, not a promise of a fixed gain in every workload. |
| Alienware 16: RTX 5070 Ti option versus the RTX 5080 test unit | 15–25% lower graphics performance, estimated by Notebookcheck. | Configuration estimate; actual game results vary. |
| Alienware 18: RTX 5080 option versus its RTX 5090 test system | About 10–15% lower graphics performance, estimated by Notebookcheck. | Reviewer estimate, not a matched benchmark suite across both configurations. |
| Alienware 18: RTX 5070 Ti option versus its RTX 5090 test system | About 30–45% lower graphics performance, estimated by Notebookcheck. | Reviewer estimate; do not interpret it as a universal FPS reduction. |
The estimated percentages are useful for framing a configuration choice, but they are not interchangeable with measured FPS. Reviewers and configurations differ, so their findings do not establish a clean head-to-head winner between the 16- and 18-inch models.

What to compare before choosing between the 16- and 18-inch models
For a fair comparison, match the actual systems and test conditions rather than relying on a model name or a single benchmark score. Check:
- GPU and CPU: Compare the exact selected processors and graphics options, not just “Alienware 16” against “Alienware 18.”
- Game and settings: Look for results at the resolution and graphics settings you plan to use. A benchmark in one game cannot predict every other title.
- Power mode: Performance modes can affect results; Notebookcheck’s Alienware 16 mode comparison is an estimate, not a universal multiplier.
- Display: Dell’s current US listing shows the 16-inch model with WQXGA OLED at 240Hz and the 18-inch model with WQXGA at 300Hz. The 18-inch specification also lists Advanced Optimus and G-SYNC. Check that these are the options on the configuration and regional page you select.
- Sustained use and portability: Consider cooling and long-session behavior alongside unplugged runtime, chassis size, weight and desk footprint. The available battery result here applies only to Notebookcheck’s tested 18-inch RTX 5090 configuration.
- Price: Compare the price of the exact configurations you would buy; benchmark results from different SKUs do not establish which is better value.
The 18-inch model is the more natural fit if you want a larger display and a desktop-replacement-style setup. The 16-inch option trades screen area for a smaller chassis. That is a size-and-use preference, not evidence that one model is faster in matched testing.

How many FPS can you expect?
There is no single FPS figure for either laptop. Results change with the CPU and GPU configuration, game, resolution, graphics settings, power mode and benchmark method. As a concrete example—not a general forecast—PCWorld reported an average of 92 FPS for its Alienware 16 in its Metro Exodus benchmark, topping that review’s comparison group. For a useful estimate for your own setup, seek a review of the same GPU configuration tested in the game and settings you care about.
Can the Alienware 18 work unplugged?
Notebookcheck’s Alienware 18 RTX 5090 review unit lasted under two hours in the publication’s real-world browsing setup, even with iGPU mode enabled, the display set to 60Hz and the Battery power profile selected. This is a result for that tested configuration and method; it does not establish runtime for every Alienware 18, or for the Alienware 16. Notebookcheck also reports that USB-C charging is supported, but is slower than charging with the included AC adapter.
