Alienware Area-51 7500: Specs, Reviews, and What to Know Before Buying

The Alienware Area-51 7500 was a configurable Core 2-era gaming desktop. Period reviews show its high-end options, benchmark results and trade-offs—and why buyers should verify the exact system.

The Alienware Area-51 7500 was a high-end gaming desktop from the 2006–07 Core 2 era, not the later Core i7 Area-51 sometimes shown in Dell documentation. It came in multiple configurations: top-end versions paired powerful processors with dual NVIDIA graphics, but period reviewers also flagged high prices, noise, and a large, attention-grabbing chassis. If you are considering one today, identify the exact configuration and inspect the individual machine rather than relying on the model name alone.

Which Area-51 generation is the 7500?

The Area-51 7500 discussed in period reviews belongs to the 2006–07 Intel Core 2 generation. It should not be confused with Dell’s later Area-51 model P08G, whose October 2009 specifications describe an Intel Core i7 processor and Intel X58 Express chipset. Dell’s currently hosted Area-51 specifications are therefore not a specification sheet for the 7500. Dell’s Area-51 specifications identify that later platform; a matching model name does not make its parts or documentation applicable to the 7500.

What were the Alienware Area-51 7500 specs?

There was no single fixed configuration. PC Perspective’s February 2007 review listed options including Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors, an NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI chipset, 800MHz DDR2 memory up to 4GB in the listed specification, and either a GeForce 7950 GT or optional dual GeForce 8800 GTX cards. Storage used SATA 3Gb/s drives, with RAID 0 or RAID 1 options; the listed power supply was 700W standard or 1000W optional. Those are period options, not a claim that every 7500 shipped with them. PC Perspective’s review and specifications describe its published options.

Two reviewed systems show how much configurations varied

Review sample Configuration and reported price
TechCrunch, December 6, 2006 Core 2 Duo Extreme, dual GeForce 7900 GTX cards, 2GB DDR2, 250GB and 300GB hard drives, Creative X-Fi sound card, and Alienware P2 chassis. The report discussed a price of roughly $4,000. It notes liquid cooling for the CPU, not the graphics cards. TechCrunch’s hands-on covers this sample.
PCWorld, July 18, 2007 Core 2 Extreme QX6700 at 2.66GHz, overclocked by Alienware to 3.2GHz and kept stable with liquid cooling; 2GB of 800MHz DDR2; and two 768MB EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX cards in SLI. PCWorld listed the tested unit at $6,007 as of July 11, 2007. PCWorld’s review covers this configuration and price.

The different graphics cards, processor, clocks, memory and price in these two examples are why a listing that says only “Area-51 7500” is not enough to establish what a particular desktop contains.

How did the 7500 perform in its period reviews?

PCWorld’s 2007 tested configuration scored 125 in WorldBench 6 Beta 2. In PCWorld’s Doom 3 test, it averaged 165 frames per second, compared with 143 fps for the tested gaming-PC average; its Far Cry result was 187 fps. These are results from PCWorld’s contemporary test setup for the QX6700 and dual-8800-GTX sample, not present-day game benchmarks. They should not be used to predict performance in current games or compared with modern systems without matching test conditions.

Reviewers broadly found the machine fast for its time, but emphasized trade-offs. PC Perspective praised speed, interior organization, cooling and build detail, while identifying noise as a drawback. Reviewer Jonathan Hung concluded on February 19, 2007: “The only problem I see about the Area 51 is it’s noise.” That is his editorial observation, not a decibel measurement. PCWorld likewise described its unit as powerful and feature-rich, while noting its large footprint and shiny plastic that showed fingerprints. TechCrunch reported strong game and audio-application performance from its own 2006 sample, a subjective hands-on impression rather than a modern test.

Is an Area-51 7500 worth buying now?

That depends on whether you want a period gaming PC for collection, restoration or legacy use, and on the condition and price of the individual unit. The review prices—roughly $4,000 in TechCrunch’s December 2006 coverage and $6,007 for PCWorld’s tested system as of July 11, 2007—are historical launch-era figures, not evidence of current resale value. No current market price or active listing is established here.

Before buying a surviving system, check the actual machine rather than treating a top-end review build as its specification:

  • Confirm the processor model and whether any overclock is present; do not assume a QX6700 or a 3.2GHz clock.
  • Identify the graphics cards and whether both are installed and functioning. A listing may describe a single-card configuration or a different GPU generation.
  • Verify installed memory, drive count and capacity, RAID arrangement, and power-supply rating from the specific unit.
  • Inspect cooling hardware and listen for operating noise; the reviews describe noise as a real drawback, but do not provide a universal sound measurement.
  • Check physical condition, including the large chassis footprint and cosmetic wear on glossy plastic.

Can you upgrade storage in a surviving 7500?

The published specifications list SATA 3Gb/s storage, so a SATA SSD is a plausible restoration path, but that interface alone does not establish that a particular drive will fit or work as a drop-in replacement. The available information does not confirm fit for a specific SSD, mounting hardware, adapters, or compatibility with every configuration. Before ordering a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, verify the machine’s drive bay dimensions, connector, mounting arrangement and existing RAID setup. No particular current SSD model or price is established.

What should you know about support and manuals?

Dell’s currently hosted support page lists Area-51 manuals, but its visible listing does not identify the 7500; those documents should not be assumed to apply to this exact generation. Confirm a document’s model designation before using it to guide repairs or part selection. The published evidence here also does not establish active support status for an individual 7500.
