There are 10 origami butterflies for The Butterfly Collector side quest, all attached to tree trunks around Osaka. Speak to the Gamemaker in Katano, Izumi Settsu, to start the quest, then follow the landmarks below; the butterflies can be collected in any order.
How to find the butterflies
Each butterfly is fixed to a tree trunk, not tucked into the branches. When you are close, use Observe mode and look for its indicator. Shrubs, fences and seasonal foliage can obscure the tree; PC Gamer notes that winter foliage can make these collectibles harder to spot. The directions below follow PC Gamer’s route descriptions. Other guides use different numbering and landmarks, so navigate by the landmarks rather than assuming every guide’s number matches.
All 10 origami butterfly locations around Osaka
- East of town, southeast of the kakurega: Follow the street southeast from the kakurega toward the river. Look for a tree behind a fence, partly hidden by reeds.
- North of the Temple of Osaka: Search the grassy patch just north of the temple, east of the kakurega, for a large tree.
- West of the Temple of Osaka: Check behind the small fenced shrine for a tree with a butterfly. This spot is visible from near the second location.
- Southeast of Osaka: Look between the houses by the river for a lone tree. It is a short distance from the third location; the Fishermen’s District camp is nearby.
- Northeast of Osaka: Just north of the gear merchant by the kakurega, find the bamboo shelter. A tree beside it, near the river, has a butterfly.
- Northeast riverbank: Cross the short bridge from the kakurega into the other half of Osaka. Check the riverbank tree near the middle bridge.
- East of Osaka: Cross the bridge northeast from the kakurega, then turn up the left-hand street. Look for a tree in a garden behind a house.
- Northwest riverbank: Find a tree in a bush beside a lamp along the river. A bridge to another island is visible in the distance.
- East of the central island: Opposite the burned houses, search inside a bush for a tree bearing a butterfly. Kojo Ruins are visible across the water.
- Southwest corner of the central island: Check the bush-covered tree along the river near the Fishermen’s District camp.
What happens after you collect them
The Gamemaker introduces the butterflies as part of a children’s game, but the finds also feed into a larger investigation: some carry messages that unlock follow-up quests leading to targets in the Butterfly Collector objective chain. PC Gamer’s walkthrough directs players to investigate “One That Got Away” after finding all 10, rather than simply returning to turn in the butterflies. PowerPyx describes additional sub-quests and a return to the Gamemaker after the objective chain, so follow the active objective on your in-game board rather than expecting a single fixed turn-in step or reward total.
Sources and route numbering
PC Gamer and Push Square independently confirm the count of 10, the Gamemaker, Osaka setting and tree placement, but their location numbering and some landmark descriptions differ. This route follows PC Gamer’s landmarks; Push Square also describes a swarm visual cue. These are editorial walkthroughs, not an official Ubisoft collectible map.
