Collect two to complete a spool and increase Hornet’s maximum Silk by one; finding every fragment adds nine Silk capacity. The locations span hidden rooms, shops, wishes, combat encounters and platforming challenges. Spoilers for regions, quests and late-game areas follow.
How Spool Fragments upgrade Hornet
Every pair of fragments completes a spool, raising Hornet’s maximum Silk capacity by one and refilling the Silk meter when the spool is completed, according to the Hollow Knight Wiki’s item reference. All 18 fragments therefore provide nine additional Silk capacity. The wiki says the Spool Extender tool can raise the total further, up to 21 Silk; the sources do not establish Hornet’s unmodified starting capacity.
The checklist below follows the wiki’s area order. Guides use different numbering, so match the location and route rather than relying on another guide’s item number. Routes may also depend on abilities, keys, quests or progression.
Act 1: six Spool Fragments
1. Bone Bottom
Search the mossy area above Bone Bottom for a breakable concealed wall. Nintendo Life’s route passes through the green area and a spike-trap room before reaching the wall: Nintendo Life’s Spool Fragment guide.

2. Central Deep Docks
From the southwest exit near Forge Daughter, descend the vertical room and take the first east exit into the large room with a burning floor. Cross to the far lever and activate it, then return over the platforms and climb to the fragment. Nintendo Life describes the same general route from below the forge shop: solidify the lava, activate the switch and climb to the upper-left shelf.
3. Greymoor
Start at the planks northeast of Halfway Home. Wall-jump east, activate the lever that deploys balloons, then pogo off them toward the high passage above Shakra’s bench. Cling Grip is needed to enter the passage. Nintendo Life’s described route also calls for Drifter’s Cloak and warns that the platforming is precise, so check your abilities if you cannot reach the route.
4. Bellhart: Frey’s shop
Complete the My Missing Courier wish, then buy the fragment from Frey for 270 Rosaries.
5. Weavenest Atla
Open Weavenest with Needolin. From the lower-area teleporter, climb the east wall and travel west; go up near the first Marrowmaw, pass the second, then drop down to the fragment.

6. The Slab
This route requires a way to reach The Slab and Cling Grip. From the Slab Bellway, climb into the large open room and traverse above the cages to a ceiling passage. Continue west through the traps and climb to the outdoor top section. Nintendo Life describes returning after recovering Hornet’s equipment and reaching the outside area from the left side of the main chamber.
Act 2: twelve Spool Fragments
7. Grand Gate
Reach the top of Grand Gate. If you approach from below, strike the scales with an upward attack to tip them and use the platforms to climb to the fragment.
8. Underworks: central section
From Ventrica Station, head south, then west. Defeat or pass the enemy gauntlet and continue west to the fragment. GameSpot also describes an Underworks reward in a combat room near the Ventrica lift; guides vary in how they order and describe locations, so use the area and route rather than the guide number.
9. Fleamaster Mooshka’s reward
The wiki says Mooshka awards a fragment when the caravan ascends to Grand Gate, after you find 12 Fleas and defeat the Last Judge. Nintendo Life instead ties the reward to speaking with Mooshka when the caravan moves to Blasted Steps, while GameSpot describes a reward for finding 15 Lost Fleas. These accounts conflict; check the in-game quest and reward state rather than treating one count as universal.

10. Whiteward: below the lift
You need the White Key. Call the lift from above, drop down and duck into a side passage as it passes, then descend below its usual stop to collect the fragment. Nintendo Life describes a similar timed route beneath the lift.
11. Cogwork Core
Go to the lower southeast section. Defeat or dodge a Cogwork Clapper, then continue east and down. The wiki notes that this enemy does not appear in Act 3.
12. Underworks: lower right
Travel east from the Cauldron and descend the vertical shaft to the room with a burning floor. Break the wall on the left to find the fragment.
13. Sherma’s reward in Whiteward
Complete the Balm for the Wounded wish; the wiki lists the White Key as a requirement. Nintendo Life describes finding Sherma in Whiteward and defeating three waves of enemies to receive the fragment.

14. Jubilana’s shop in Songclave
Complete the The Lost Merchant wish, then buy the fragment from Jubilana for 500 Rosaries. Nintendo Life calls the wish “The Missing Merchant”; use the title shown in your quest log if the wording differs between guides.
15. Eastern Deep Docks: behind the locked gate
The wiki lists Clawline and Cling Grip as requirements; Faydown Cloak makes the platforming easier. Open the locked gate in the southeast and descend into the cavern. Use Clawline to reach the far wall and break the explosive rock, then cross the hazardous platforming route. Nintendo Life’s route calls for a Simple Key to open the door beneath Forge Daughter’s shop and recommends returning with Double Jump and Magma Bell. Because the guides differ on access requirements, check the route against your current abilities and the door you have found.
16. High Halls
Look for the fragment at the highest point in the left vertical room. The wiki lists Faydown Cloak and Clawline, although Silk Soar can bypass the challenge. Nintendo Life also places a fragment at the tower top, among rings, cogs and flying enemies.
17. Memorium
Enter the western chamber one floor below Ventrica Station, west of the fourth floor, and navigate around the spikes. The wiki lists Faydown Cloak and Clawline; Nintendo Life describes a thorn-jumping route using movement abilities.

18. Grindle’s shop in Blasted Steps
Buy the fragment from Grindle for 680 Rosaries. The wiki lists Faydown Cloak and Cling Grip as requirements; Nintendo Life and GameSpot also identify this as a shop purchase and describe a route requiring double-jump access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use the checklist when a fragment is missing
First compare your map region and progression with the Act 1 and Act 2 headings. Then check whether the entry is a hidden pickup, a shop purchase, a wish reward, a Flea reward, a combat-room reward or a platforming challenge. This helps separate a missed route from an unfinished prerequisite. The Silksong Map’s Spool Fragment category lists 18 points of interest and can help identify a region to revisit.
Quest naming and guide numbering are not consistent: for example, the Songclave wish appears as both “The Lost Merchant” and “The Missing Merchant.” The Flea reward accounts also disagree about its prerequisites and timing, so verify it through the game’s own quest/reward state.
The Hollow Knight Wiki records a fix in version 1.0.28891 (Patch 3) for cases in which fragments could be permanently missed if a player quit immediately after collecting them. That note does not establish which current builds or saves may still be affected. If your count appears wrong after collection, check your game version and save state rather than assuming every older save was corrected.
Sources and route differences
The compact location list and requirements are based primarily on the Hollow Knight Wiki’s Spool Fragment reference. Walk-through details and alternate route descriptions come from Nintendo Life and GameSpot. These guides differ in numbering and, in some cases, access requirements or reward conditions; where that affects a route, the differences are noted above.
