The required access abilities or item are Silkspear, Surgeon’s Key, and Threefold Melody, respectively. Each heart raises the amount of Silk that can regenerate automatically by one strand.
Silk Heart locations and access requirements
The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Silk Heart reference lists three hearts, each tied to a boss encounter. Use this route table to identify the relevant gate:

How to get the Whiteward Silk Heart
The Whiteward route is easy to miss if you reach the locked door before finding its key. The walkthrough from GamingBolt describes the practical sequence:
- Find the Surgeon’s Key in the upper-right part of Whiteward.
- Go to the locked door in the lower-left part of Whiteward and use the key.
- Proceed through the route and defeat The Unravelled.
After the boss encounter, touch the Silk Heart to collect it. The item reference describes a memory sequence with a platforming section before Hornet leaves with the heart.

What Silk Hearts do
The item description reads, “Silk Hearts will automatically regenerate some Silk.” Each heart increases the maximum amount that this automatic regeneration can restore by one strand, so collecting all three expands the regeneration cap by three strands.
The Hollow Knight Wiki’s mechanics reference reports that the first strand regenerates after 1.5 seconds and each later strand takes 4.25 seconds, with regeneration occurring one strand at a time. It also says any change in the amount of Silk Hornet holds resets the timer. These timing details are community-reference reporting; no official Team Cherry confirmation was identified for them.

The same reference says Weavelight reduces the delay and can function like an additional heart, while resting at a bench instantly restores Silk generated by hearts and Weavelight. Treat these as wiki-reported mechanics rather than official patch-note specifications.
Optional map checklist
Full Silksong Map shows three Silk Heart markers and says it was checked against Patch 5 on September 17, 2026. Use it as a visual checklist, keeping in mind that routes or markers can change with patches.

What happens after you collect a heart
The wiki says the heart appears after its associated boss fight and must be touched to collect it. The dialogue in the memory scene is interpreted by the wiki as heavily implying Grand Mother Silk is speaking; that is a lore interpretation, not confirmed developer commentary.
