The livestock systems have different care and production loops; the dog is listed as an animal but is not covered by the official animal-care tutorial catalogue. Goats, water buffalo and baby animals are among the additions highlighted for FS25 by GIANTS Software.
Which animals are in Farming Simulator 25?
GIANTS Software’s FS25 overview lists nine animal types: cows, buffalo, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, bees and a dog. The Academy’s animal-care tutorials cover the eight livestock and animal systems—chickens, sheep, cows, pigs, horses, bees, goats and water buffalo—but do not include a dog tutorial. Treat the dog as a roster or companion animal, not as a confirmed production system.
The overview calls the species buffalo; the Academy labels its tutorial “Water Buffalos.” GIANTS Software highlights goats, water buffalo and baby animals as new FS25 features. These are the stated additions, not a claim that every other animal is unchanged from earlier games. See the official Farming Simulator Academy tutorial overview for the full list of species lessons.
Which animal should you start with?
Choose according to the work and products you want, not just the animal’s name. The official tutorials describe chickens as easy to care for and recommend that beginners consider chickens or sheep before cows. Cows are described as the game’s most complex animal-care system; horses add riding and brushing to feeding.

How to care for chickens
Chickens are a relatively simple starting point in the official tutorial. They need feed but not water, and the choice between a small pasture and a larger coop affects the scale of your operation.
Choose housing and feed
- A chicken pasture holds up to 30 birds. The coop is the larger option for breeding and egg production.
- Feed can be wheat, barley, sorghum or purchased chicken feed, which the tutorial describes as basically wheat.
- Chickens do not need water.
Breed and sell eggs
A rooster is needed for breeding. The tutorial says chickens mature at six months and reproduction requires 100% health and spare housing capacity. Eggs can be sold to a bakery, restaurant or farmers market. If you own the bakery and have the other ingredients, you can use eggs to produce cake there.
The tutorial’s basic equipment setup uses a coop or pasture and a tractor with a front-loader attacher and pallet fork to handle feed and egg pallets; a pickup is optional for transporting pallets. These are in-game equipment suggestions.
How to care for cows
Cows need the most planning among the animal systems detailed here. Breed, housing, feed and product goals interact, so decide whether you want milk, animal sales, breeding or a combination before choosing a setup. GIANTS Software’s cow-care tutorial calls cows the most complex animal type to care for in the game.

Choose a breed for your goal
- Brown-Swiss and Holstein cows produce milk and can reproduce.
- Angus and Limousin do not produce milk; they are suited to breeding and selling.
Choose pasture or barn
- A pasture needs feed and water and is primarily intended for breeding.
- Barns need feed but do not require manual water delivery. Depending on the barn, they can support milk, manure and slurry.
- A barn with a feeding robot can mix and distribute TMR when its ingredients are available. For a barn without a robot, a mixer wagon can prepare TMR.
Understand feed productivity
GIANTS Software’s cow tutorial publishes these FS25 feed productivity figures; the page does not state a year. They are game mechanics, not real-world animal nutrition measurements.
| Feed | In-game productivity |
|---|---|
| TMR | 100% |
| Hay | 80% |
| Silage | 80% |
| Grass | 40% |
The tutorial says TMR contains straw, hay, silage and mineral feed. Cows can reproduce from 18 months old when health is 100% and there is free housing capacity.
Plan for the equipment your setup needs
The cow tutorial’s equipment list varies with the chosen housing and feeding setup. It includes a tractor or front loader and equipment for handling bales and pallets; a mixer wagon for manually mixing TMR; a straw blower for compatible manure barns; and, where relevant, a tank, slurry tank, manure spreader, manure heap and compatible animal trailer.

Horse breeds differ visually in the official tutorial. Their management loop combines feeding with active care: you must ride horses to improve fitness and value, and brush them to maintain cleanliness. See GIANTS Software’s horse-care tutorial for its species-specific lesson.

Set up housing and feed
- Pastures require manual water; barns supply water automatically and can offer manure production.
- For full feed effectiveness, provide base feed (oat or sorghum), hay and root crops (carrots, parsnips or red beet).
GIANTS Software’s tutorial gives the following feed shares; it does not state a publication year.
| Feed group | Share of feed effectiveness |
|---|---|
| Base feed: oat or sorghum | 57% |
| Hay | 38% |
| Root crops: carrots, parsnips or red beet | 5% |
Ride, clean and breed
Ride each horse regularly and complete its daily riding progress to 100% to increase that individual horse’s fitness and value. A horse brush, bought in the in-game dealership, is used to clean horses. Horses can reproduce from 22 months old with 100% health and free housing capacity.
Where to find care rules for the other animals
The Academy catalogue includes lessons for sheep, pigs, goats, water buffalo and bees, but their detailed feeding, housing, production and breeding mechanics are not established in the species-specific information presented here. Use the corresponding lesson in the official Academy index rather than assuming that another species’ rules apply. In particular, do not carry the cow, chicken or horse breeding ages over to species whose detailed lesson has not been consulted.
