All Assassin’s Creed Protagonists Ranked

Ezio ranks first for his development across three games, but the strongest Assassin’s Creed protagonist depends on whether you value character growth, impact, or a distinct point of view.

Ezio Auditore is the best Assassin’s Creed protagonist overall—not because there is an official franchise ranking, but because his story gives him the strongest combination of personal growth, memorable personality, and lasting impact on the series. This is an editorial ranking, not a popularity poll or a canon verdict.

The list covers the principal historical protagonists of the mainline games, plus Aveline from Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. It includes Shay from Rogue, ranks Jacob and Evie as separate leads, and treats Kassandra and Alexios—and the male and female Eivor options—as shared protagonist roles rather than separate authored arcs. Naoe and Yasuke, who have distinct stories and play styles in Shadows, are ranked individually. Supporting characters who are briefly playable, modern-day framing characters, and leads from spin-offs or standalone DLC are outside this scope.

The order weighs five things: character development, impact on the Creed and series, distinct personality and motivation, how well the game uses the character, and memorability. Those are judgments about characterization, not a measure of who is most popular or most fun to control.

All Assassin’s Creed protagonists ranked

  1. Ezio Auditore — Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations

Ezio earns the top spot because the series gives him room to change across three games. His story moves beyond revenge into leadership, responsibility, and reflection, while his charm keeps those shifts engaging rather than dutiful. He also makes the Brotherhood feel like a living institution, not just a set of rules the hero inherits. That extended character arc is the main reason he ranks first.

  2. Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad — Assassin’s Creed and later appearances

Altaïr’s fall from status and gradual reconsideration of what he believes give the original game a clear character spine. His influence reaches beyond his own campaign: his ideas and later-life story connect his personal growth to the Assassins’ history. He is less immediately warm than Ezio, but his restraint suits a story about learning humility and questioning certainty.

  3. Bayek of Siwa — Assassin’s Creed Origins

Bayek makes the founding-era story personal. Grief and a desire for justice shape his choices, while his care for ordinary people gives his role as a protector emotional weight. He is a compelling lead because the game’s larger account of the Hidden Ones grows out of his individual losses rather than replacing them.

  4. Edward Kenway — Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Edward begins as an ambitious privateer whose aims do not match the Assassins’ ideals. The contrast between his self-interest and the costs of that outlook supplies his arc with momentum. His humor and swagger make him easy to remember; the change in what he values makes him more than a charismatic pirate at the center of an adventure.

  5. Basim Ibn Ishaq — Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Basim’s appeal lies in the tension between the street thief he is and the master assassin he becomes. Ubisoft describes Mirage as a return to the initiate experience, built around contracts, hidden bureaus, stealth, and keeping a low profile. The game puts that tighter focus around Basim rather than asking him to carry an ensemble. Ubisoft’s Mirage page also says the Valley of Memory update adds an AlUla region and a new story arc for him; that is additional character material, distinct from the update’s mission-replay, parkour, and customization features.

    • Make history across 80 hours of gameplay including three complete games and all single-player add-on content previously released.
  6. Kassandra or Alexios — Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Odyssey offers a player choice between Kassandra and Alexios for the central protagonist role, so they share one place here rather than being treated as two independently written arcs. The role’s strongest quality is its fit with a sprawling adventure: the protagonist is an expressive presence who can carry both intimate family conflict and the game’s larger mythic scale. The choice matters to how players experience the lead, but it does not create two separate rankings in this list.

  7. Evie Frye — Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Evie’s discipline and commitment to the Creed give her a distinct identity alongside her twin. She is a strong fit for a story concerned with the Assassins’ goals in London, and her steadiness provides a useful counterpoint to Jacob. She ranks above him for the consistency of that characterization, though the game’s shared focus means neither twin gets the uninterrupted development of a solo lead.

  8. Connor Kenway — Assassin’s Creed III

Connor’s seriousness and sense of duty make him one of the series’ most direct protagonists. His personal loyalties and the wider conflict around him do not always sit comfortably together, which gives his story real friction. His reserved manner can make him less immediately accessible than the top-ranked leads, but that restraint is part of his character, not an absence of motivation.

  9. Naoe — Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Naoe is a shinobi whose approach emphasizes stealth, parkour, and gadgets. Ubisoft Québec presents her as one half of a deliberately contrasting pair, with a personality designed to complement Yasuke’s. That distinction gives her a clear gameplay identity and helps define the game’s dual-lead structure. The ranking reflects her role as a protagonist, not a claim that stealth is inherently better than combat.

    • MULTIPLAYER EXPERIENCE: Play with your friends in the ruthless and critically acclaimed multiplayer experience. Choose from an eclectic cast of characters from the Golden Age of Pirates and fight to the death in exotic locations
  10. Yasuke — Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Yasuke’s armored, combat-oriented approach makes him a sharp contrast to Naoe. Ubisoft Québec describes the two leads’ styles and personalities as complementary; their differences are part of how Shadows is structured, not simply alternate ways to play the same character. The game’s characterization is fictionalized: Ubisoft says Yasuke is based on a historical figure while expanding on the established historical story. This ranking concerns the game’s protagonist, not a claim about what is historically documented.

  11. Shay Patrick Cormac — Assassin’s Creed Rogue

Shay’s place in the ranking comes from the perspective shift at the center of his story: he breaks with the Assassins and becomes a Templar. That makes him a useful challenge to the series’ usual assumptions about the Creed and its enemies. The premise is strong, though his character leaves a smaller overall impression than the leads whose stories receive several games or a more sustained arc.

  12. Eivor — Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Valhalla lets players choose male or female Eivor, so the options are treated as one protagonist role here. Eivor’s defining conflict is the pull between a Viking life and the world of the Hidden Ones. That broad setup supports an expansive game, but the scale can dilute the sense of a single, tightly shaped character journey.

  13. Aveline de Grandpré — Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation

Aveline qualifies because Liberation gives her the central protagonist role, even though it is not one of the numbered mainline games. Her identity and circumstances distinguish her from the series’ other leads, and including her avoids treating “main playable characters” as synonymous with numbered entries alone. Her smaller place in the franchise limits her accumulated narrative impact compared with the long-running leads.

  14. Arno Dorian — Assassin’s Creed Unity

Arno is a personable lead whose story ties personal loss to the conflict between Assassins and Templars. The premise gives him a natural route into the Creed, but his development is less distinctive than that of the characters ranked above him. His strongest moments depend on the relationships and political tensions around him; his own transformation can feel less fully defined.

  15. Jacob Frye — Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Jacob’s impulsive, irreverent personality makes him an immediate foil for Evie’s caution. That contrast gives the twins’ partnership energy, but his appetite for action can leave the consequences of his choices underexplored. He is memorable as part of the duo, even if his individual arc is less convincing than the best single-lead stories in the series.

Who is the best Assassin’s Creed protagonist?

For the strongest sustained character development, Ezio is the best overall choice in this ranking. Altaïr is the strongest pick if you value a story about questioning the Creed, while Bayek stands out for the personal grief and protective instinct at the heart of his origin story. Those answers differ because “best story,” “most memorable,” and “most popular” are not the same question.

Who is the most popular Assassin’s Creed character?

The available evidence here does not establish a reliable franchise-wide popularity ranking. WatchMojo describes its own list as ranking main playable characters by popularity and affection, while Insider Gaming’s list places Ezio first and Altaïr second and discusses their development and impact. These are different editorial approaches, not a shared canon or audience poll.

Why are Kassandra and Alexios ranked together?

Odyssey presents Kassandra and Alexios as player-selectable versions of its central role. Ranking them separately would imply two wholly independent authored arcs, which this list does not assume. Ubisoft also provides character resources for both, but that alone does not establish that their stories should count as separate protagonist entries.

Are all playable Assassin’s Creed characters included?

No. This is a ranking of principal historical protagonists in the mainline games plus Liberation, not every character with a playable sequence across the franchise. It leaves out modern-day framing characters, supporting characters who are briefly playable, and protagonists from spin-offs or standalone DLC. WatchMojo uses a similar mainline-plus-Liberation boundary for its own ranking, but that is one workable scope rather than an official definition of “all.”
