What the Command Center button does
Command Center is ASUS’s quick-access overlay for settings you frequently change while using Windows or playing a game. A short press opens it; pressing the button again closes it. The panel is not a universal Windows shortcut layer: it is an Armoury Crate SE feature, so its behavior depends on Armoury Crate SE and its supporting services working correctly.

Opening the panel is separate from using its controls. For example, the physical button opens Command Center, while the performance mode, FPS limiter, brightness, volume, and control-mode options are selected inside the overlay.
Important Command Center controls
Operating mode and TDP
Depending on the model and software version, Command Center can provide performance operating modes and show the TDP value associated with each mode. TDP is not the same as the Ally’s total system power draw. A higher mode can improve performance, but it may also increase heat, fan noise, and battery consumption. There is no universally best wattage setting; the right choice depends on the game, frame-rate target, temperature, and whether you are plugged in.
ASUS documents the TDP display in its ROG Ally Series FAQ.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →FPS limiter
ASUS lists these Command Center limiter choices:
- 30 FPS
- 45 FPS
- 60 FPS
- 90 FPS
- Max
According to ASUS, enable the limiter before launching the game, and use Exclusive Full-screen mode. The setting is a ceiling, not a guarantee: choosing 60 FPS cannot make hardware sustain 60 FPS in a demanding game. A 30 FPS cap may suit efficiency and consistency, while 45 FPS can be useful with a 90-Hz display mode when 60 FPS is not sustainable.
Control Mode
- Gamepad Mode: controller-first input for games.
- Desktop Mode: maps the controls for navigating Windows.
- Auto Mode: chooses behavior based on the focused application and its profile.
In Auto Mode, a custom game profile is used when one exists. If an application is in the Game Library without a profile, ASUS says Gamepad Mode is applied by default. ASUS also identifies Xbox Cloud Gaming as an Auto Mode exception; manually select Gamepad Mode or Desktop Mode when using it.

Brightness and volume
Brightness and volume are Command Center controls, not fixed physical-button combinations. Open the overlay and use the relevant slider or quick control. ASUS specifically documents changing brightness through the Command Center slider.
Other possible tiles
The tile list is not identical on every Ally. Depending on the model, Armoury Crate SE version, firmware, and customization, you may see controls for display mode, refresh rate, AMD graphics settings, external devices such as ROG XG Mobile, lighting, audio, connection settings, or screen capture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to customize Command Center
- Press the Command Center button.
- Choose the Command Center customization or edit option. The exact label can differ by Armoury Crate SE version.
- Add, remove, or reorder available controls.
- Confirm the layout.
- Reopen Command Center and verify the result.
ASUS documents an Edit Command Center function for adding or removing items. Its Armoury Crate SE documentation separately notes that the Command Center Layout option is supported for the RC71/RC72 product families shown on that page. Do not confuse editing the tile list with editing a game profile, changing the global Control Mode, or changing Windows Quick Settings.
For software requirements, the cited ASUS documentation lists Armoury Crate SE version 2.1.10.0 or later for the supported product group on that page. Treat this as the requirement stated in that documentation, not as a permanent universal minimum.
Using the Ally as a Windows desktop
In Desktop Mode, ASUS’s default navigation mappings are:

- Right trigger: right click.
These assignments can be changed in Armoury Crate SE. If you need the on-screen keyboard, hold M1 or M2 and press D-pad Up. You can also open it from Command Center or by tapping the keyboard icon in the Windows taskbar.
How to remap M1 and M2
The rear M1 and M2 buttons are configurable rather than being limited to one permanent shortcut. They can be assigned gamepad inputs, actions, keyboard keys, numpad keys, mouse functions, or combination keys. Armoury Crate SE also supports primary and secondary functions: a rear button can act as a modifier when held with another control.
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Open the relevant Game Profile or control-mode configuration.
- Select M1 or M2.
- Choose the primary or secondary function.
- Save or apply the profile.
- Test the mapping in the intended game or Windows mode.
A mapping may work in one profile or control mode but not another. Test both Gamepad Mode and Desktop Mode if the behavior seems inconsistent.
If you trigger M1 or M2 accidentally, open the applicable Game Profile, select M1/M2, and disable Set as Secondary Function, or remap the button. This prevents an unwanted rear-button-plus-another-button combination from firing.

Armoury Crate SE includes a Keyboard Shortcuts setting that lets you configure an external-keyboard shortcut for opening Armoury Crate SE or Command Center. ASUS does not specify one universal factory key combination in the cited documentation; create the shortcut in Armoury Crate SE instead. This is especially useful when the Ally is docked.

Model compatibility
| Model | Identifier | How to interpret this guide |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally (2023) | RC71L | Core hardware shortcuts are documented directly. |
| ROG Ally X (2024) | RC72LA | Uses the documented Command Center and Armoury Crate button behavior. |
| ROG Xbox Ally (2025) | RC73YA | Has Xbox-oriented hardware; verify shortcuts in its model-specific documentation. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) | RC73XA | Do not assume the original Ally layout applies unchanged. |
ASUS’s newer ROG Xbox Ally models include Xbox-oriented controls such as Xbox, View, and Menu buttons alongside Command Center, Armoury Crate, and assignable grip controls. Their presence in the wider Armoury Crate SE product documentation does not prove that every shortcut from the RC71L or RC72LA manuals behaves identically.
When a shortcut does not work
- Check the timing. Use a quick tap for the interface toggle. Holding the Command Center button invokes Ctrl + Alt + Delete instead.
- Try another input method. Use the touchscreen, Windows taskbar, or an external keyboard to open Armoury Crate SE or the on-screen keyboard.
- Check the active profile and Control Mode. A remap may apply only to a particular game profile or mode.
- Open Armoury Crate SE manually. If it will not open, check its Update Center and install available updates.
- Reinstall Armoury Crate SE if desktop input also fails. ASUS says Armoury Crate enables the Ally’s gamepad-as-mouse behavior; uninstalling it can leave Windows difficult to control with the joystick and buttons until the software is restored.
For an ineffective FPS limiter, confirm that it was enabled before the game launched and that the game uses Exclusive Full-screen mode. Also check for a separate in-game, driver, Xbox Game Bar, or third-party frame-rate cap.
For incorrect Auto Mode behavior, make sure the intended executable is in the Game Library and that the correct game is focused rather than its launcher. If that still fails, manually select Gamepad Mode or Desktop Mode.
For model-specific behavior, check the model number on the device or its support page before applying a shortcut table written for a different Ally generation.
