Some labels add a health bar that favors a particular damage type; others block attacks, heal the enemy, or make its position dangerous. If you see an orb, chain, charge, or death warning, deal with that immediate threat first. Then choose your damage type and focus your fire.
How enemy modifiers work
A modifier adds an effect to an enemy, and more than one effect can be active at once. The Icy Veins modifier guide lists its global set from UVHM1 onward and says modifier presence increases toward UVHM5; treat that as the guide’s description of difficulty availability, not a guarantee that every listed enemy will have a modifier. Mission-specific effects can also apply to groups. For example, Borderlands Support’s Version 1.6 notes describe Armored, Deal With It, and Invulnerable appearing together in the Wildcard mission His Vile Sanctum.

When several labels are active, read them as separate problems rather than looking for one weapon that solves everything. First handle a mechanic that is actively preventing damage or threatening your position. Then account for healing or damage restrictions, match your weapon to the enemy’s current health segment, and decide whether it is worth prioritizing a loot modifier.
Match your damage to the active health bar
Extra health bars change which element is most useful. The qualitative matchups below come from Jason Rodriguez’s Epic Games Store beginner guide, published September 11, 2025. They are a matchup aid, not a promise of a particular damage result: weapon parts, skills, enemy traits, and the health segment currently taking damage can all affect the outcome.

The modifier guide describes these health-bar effects and suggests matching your damage accordingly:
- Healthy: Adds a red health bar. Favor incendiary damage.
- Armored: Adds a yellow armor bar. Favor corrosive; cryo is another option, though the elemental chart rates it only decent against armor.
- Shielded: Adds a blue shield bar. Shock is the strongest listed match; cryo and radiation are also strong against shields.
Several other traits affect sustain or your ability to make progress rather than simply adding a health bar:

- Vampiric: Heals from damage it deals and can restore health, armor, or shields. Avoid unnecessary incoming damage, and do not rely on minions to absorb hits for you—the modifier guide warns that this can benefit the enemy.
- Regenerative: Restores health, armor, and shields over time. Focus fire until it is down, or isolate it and clear other enemies before returning to it; spreading damage across targets gives it time to recover.
- Elemental Eater: Can heal from damage matching its current attunement. Watch the attunement indicator and switch elements. Under the official Version 1.6 rule, 10% of elemental damage gets through, so elemental damage is reduced rather than entirely blocked.
- Chromatic: Periodically changes elemental attunement. Check its current state again before choosing an element, especially if Elemental Eater is also active.
Break defenses and work around damage restrictions
Some labels change how attacks land. Do not spend a full magazine repeating a shot type the modifier is countering; change your approach or remove the source of the defense.
- Deflector: Has a chance to send direct projectiles back. Avoid slow, high-damage direct shots. Fast, lower-damage shots, melee, splash, and skill damage are alternatives listed by the modifier guide.
- Deal With It: The guide describes the enemy as vulnerable only to critical hits. Aim at weak points or use gear and skills that help land critical hits. Version 1.6 also permits 20% of Action Skill damage through, making Action Skills a partial route—not a way to ignore the restriction entirely.
- Immovable: Resists knockback and slowing effects such as cryo. Do not depend on a slow or knockback to create room or trigger a bonus that requires those effects.
- Fortified: Gains a rotating barrier. Wait for an opening, shoot over it if your angle allows, or target its central orb if necessary.
- Invisibility: A blue orb channels into the target, which becomes a shimmer. Aim at the shimmer; the modifier guide says shock can remove the invisibility by targeting the orb.
- Invulnerability: A yellow orb channels into the target and makes it immune to damage. Destroy the orb first, then attack the enemy normally.
- IMMORTAL: Some enemies in named locations or side missions are temporarily immune to all listed damage and skills. The guide advises leaving them alone and killing other enemies until the status ends. This is not the same as Invulnerability: the latter has a breakable yellow orb.
- One Crit Wonder: In Wildcard missions, the guide says the enemy can only be hurt by critical hits but dies in one hit. Use passive critical-hit chance if you have it.
Control position, timing, and target focus
These modifiers make movement, spacing, or choosing the right target part of the counter. Look for what triggers the danger—proximity, a charge, a death, or an effect spreading through the group—and act before it does.

- Chain Master: Links nearby enemies with damaging elemental chains. Thin out weaker enemies and avoid staying where a new chain can trap you.
- Leaking: Leaves elemental puddles based on its attunement. Move deliberately so you do not fill escape routes with hazards.
- Cold Heart: Deals bonus cryo damage and creates a cryo explosion on death. Make space before finishing it.
- Centripetal: Creates a black hole on death that pulls nearby friends and foes before exploding. Keep your distance; if caught, use air dash to escape.
- Vengeful: Launches a missile swarm on death. Stay close to cover or keep enough shield or armor to survive the hit.
- Ticking: Self-destructs near death. Back away before delivering the finishing damage.
- Quickened: Moves faster. Keep a dodge, slide, or air dash ready against melee enemies.
- Fast Forward: Attacks faster. Do not stay exposed to its damage for long, particularly if it also has a trait that boosts damage.
- Strong: Deals more base damage. Respect its hits and be especially cautious if another damage-boosting trait is active.
- Experienced: Is higher level than normal and, according to the guide, has more health and damage. Expect a longer, more dangerous fight.
- Tricky: Can use abilities such as temporary invisibility and a short dash. Lead your shots or wait for a clear one rather than relying on slow, powerful attacks that may miss.
- Irritable: Fixates on a target and periodically charges. Be ready to evade; do not assume allies or minions will draw its attention away.
- Contagious: May spread modifiers to other enemies. Keep checking the group for a newly acquired trait, particularly one that changes damage, healing, or positioning.
A special case: Stim Pack
The modifier guide associates Stim Pack with Genone. It boosts offense and rapidly regenerates in a way the guide compares to a medkit. Prioritize damage before its healing and offensive advantage compounds.

These labels describe rewards, not defensive traits. If the drop is useful to you, prioritize the enemy accordingly; otherwise, do not mistake the name for a combat warning.

Version-sensitive mechanics and Ordonite Infusion
Modifier behavior can change in patches. Borderlands Support’s Version 1.6 notes, published April 29, 2026 and updated July 2, 2026, state that Elemental Eater lets 10% of elemental damage through and Deal With It lets 20% of Action Skill damage through. Those are developer-published rule values; use them for Version 1.6 rather than treating older descriptions of either trait as absolute immunity. The notes also say high-chance elemental weapons are more useful against Elemental Eater.
Official February 2026 notes describe Pearlescent gear’s Ordonite Infusion as automatically overriding an element when doing so is more effective against the target’s health type. The notes specify important exceptions:

- BORDERLANDS 4 — Enter Kairos as one of four new Vault Hunters and take on a ruthless tyrant in this action looter shooter.
- THE TIMEKEEPER — Break free from the oppressive Timekeeper as a world-altering catastrophe unleashes Mayhem across Kairos.
- BE A BADASS — Blast through enemies with an arsenal of weapons, use dynamic movement abilities, and unleash your Vault Hunter's Action Skills in intense shooter combat.
- BUILD YOUR VAULT HUNTER — Customize your build with branching skill trees and pursue powerful gear as you take on enemies across Kairos.
- EXPLORE KAIROS — Ride your hover bike across lush fields, towering peaks, and deadly deserts, discovering warring factions, dynamic events, quests, and unforgettable characters.
- Multi-element Maliwan gear uses its active element.
- Infusion applies to initial underbarrel damage, but not to beams or subsequent projectiles.
- It does not change Vex’s Phase Covenant trait or trigger related passives for the infused element.
That makes Ordonite Infusion a useful adaptive option, not a universal answer to every weapon behavior or Vex interaction.
