These soft caps are where extra levels begin producing noticeably smaller gains. The important distinction is that each attribute can affect several systems—such as HP, stamina, weapon damage, spell scaling, or status buildup—and those systems do not necessarily share the same breakpoint.
For current balance data, this guide covers the 1.16.x version of Elden Ring: PC App Ver. 1.16.2 with Regulation Ver. 1.16.1, and PlayStation/Xbox Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. The upcoming Tarnished Pack, scheduled for August 28, 2026, is not included in these values. See the official patch notes.
Quick Elden Ring stat-cap chart
| Attribute or effect | Major soft caps | Strict maximum or endpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Vigor — HP | 40, 60 | 99 Vigor; 2,100 base HP |
| Mind — FP | 50, 60 | 99 Mind; 450 base FP |
| Mind — Focus | 40, 60 | Very small gains after 60 |
| Endurance — stamina | 15, 30, 50 | 99 Endurance; 170 stamina |
| Endurance — equip load | 25, 60 | Continues increasing to 99 |
| Endurance — Robustness | 40, 60 | Continues increasing to 99 |
| Strength/Dexterity — weapon attack | Usually 60, 80 | 99 attribute |
| Intelligence/Faith — weapon attack | Usually 20, 50, 80 | 99 attribute |
| Intelligence — sorcery scaling | Usually 60, 80 | Staff-dependent; 99 Intelligence |
| Faith — incantation scaling | Usually 60, 80 | Seal-dependent; 99 Faith |
| Arcane — status buildup | 45, 60 | Small gains continue to 99 |
| Dexterity — casting speed | — | 70 effective Dexterity |
| Strength while two-handing | 54 displayed Strength reaches 81 effective Strength | Effective Strength can exceed 99 |
These are planning targets, not universal laws. Weapon upgrade level, affinity, damage type, catalyst, spell, equipment bonuses, and the stat’s specific effect can all change the exact curve. The most reliable check is to equip the item you actually intend to use and inspect the resulting attack power or spell scaling.
What soft cap and hard cap mean
A soft cap is a diminishing-returns breakpoint. Points invested after it still work, but each additional level gives less of the relevant benefit.
A hard cap can mean either that a particular effect stops improving or that the attribute itself cannot rise any further. In Elden Ring, the universal attribute hard cap is 99 for Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane.
Players often call 40, 45, 60, or 80 a “hard cap” because those are useful stopping points. Technically, most are soft caps: HP, FP, stamina, weapon attack, spell scaling, or status buildup may continue increasing afterward, sometimes very inefficiently. The attribute tables show why one number cannot describe every effect.
Vigor: HP soft caps at 40 and 60
Vigor increases maximum HP, Fire Defense, and Immunity. Its most important HP breakpoints are:
- 40 Vigor: the first major reduction in HP gained per level.
- 60 Vigor: a second, much sharper reduction.
- 99 Vigor: the maximum normal investment, producing 2,100 base HP.
For reference, the HP totals at the major values are approximately:

- 60 Vigor: 1,900 HP
- 99 Vigor: 2,100 HP
For most characters, 40 is an early-game target and 60 is the practical end point for survivability. HP still rises after 60, so 60 is not Vigor’s strict hard cap. Fire Defense and Immunity use related but not identical curves, meaning their breakpoints should not automatically be assumed to match HP. See the Vigor data.
Mind: FP and Focus use different caps
FP soft caps at 50 and 60
Mind raises FP and Focus. For FP, gains begin declining around 50 Mind and decline sharply after 60 Mind. At 99 Mind, the character has 450 base FP, so Mind continues to function after 60 but becomes an expensive way to gain a small amount of additional resource.
38 Mind is not a Mind soft cap. A fully upgraded Flask of Cerulean Tears restores 220 FP, while 38 Mind provides 221 FP. That makes 38 Mind a convenient practical target for players who want one blue flask to refill the entire bar, but the FP curve continues through 50, 60, and beyond.
Focus soft caps at 40 and 60
Focus determines resistance to Sleep and Madness. Focus gains begin meaningfully around 31 Mind, with major breakpoints at approximately 40 and 60 Mind. Gains after 60 are very small. The Focus value displayed on the Status screen also includes armor and other sources, so it is not produced by Mind alone. See the Mind and Focus tables.

Patch 1.04 adjusted lower-level FP and stamina growth, so current build planning should not rely automatically on pre-1.04 tables. The official 1.04 notes document those changes.
Endurance: stamina, equip load, and Robustness
Endurance has no single universal cap because it feeds three separate systems.
Stamina: 15, 30, and 50
Stamina gains have major diminishing-return points at 15, 30, and 50 Endurance. Stamina continues rising after 50 and reaches 170 at 99 Endurance, but post-50 investment is extremely inefficient. For stamina alone, 50 is the practical endpoint—not the attribute’s hard cap.
Equip Load: 25 and 60
Equip Load has principal breakpoints around 25 and 60 Endurance. It continues increasing through 99, so additional Endurance can still be worthwhile when it lets you wear heavier armor or maintain a preferred roll category.
Roll categories are based on the percentage of maximum Equip Load:
- Light Load: below 30%.
- Medium Load: above 30% and below 70%.
- Heavy Load: above 70%.
- Overloaded: above 100%, preventing normal rolling and backstepping.
Because Equip Load is a practical threshold system, the correct stopping point is often whatever lets your chosen equipment remain under 70%, rather than an arbitrary Endurance number. See the Equip Load mechanics.
Robustness: 40 and 60
Robustness affects resistance to Hemorrhage and Frostbite. Its major Endurance breakpoints are approximately 40 and 60, with meaningful gains beginning around 31 Endurance. These values are separate from stamina’s 15/30/50 curve. More details are listed in the Endurance tables.
Strength: weapon damage and two-handing
Weapon attack power
Strength has no single damage curve shared by every weapon. The result changes with the weapon, upgrade level, affinity, and damage components. For many physical Strength weapons, the most useful rule of thumb is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- 60 Strength: a major first endpoint for many builds.
- 80 Strength: the final major damage breakpoint for most Strength setups.
- 99 Strength: the attribute maximum, with poor efficiency after 80.
Older charts often quote 20/55/80. That shorthand can still describe some scaling curves, but it should not be treated as a universal Heavy, Standard, Fire, or split-damage table. Compare the actual weapon’s attack power after each level investment. The weapon-scaling references provide useful general comparisons.
Two-handing changes effective Strength
Two-handing normally applies a 1.5× Strength multiplier for weapon requirements and much of the weapon’s Strength scaling:
- 54 displayed Strength × 1.5 = 81 effective Strength.
- That makes 54 Strength a common two-handed stopping point for reaching the neighborhood of the 80-Strength damage breakpoint.
- At 67 displayed Strength, effective Strength exceeds 99 even though the character’s displayed attribute does not.
This is a calculation bonus, not a way to raise the actual attribute above 99. Also, not every skill uses the ordinary two-handed calculation. A weapon’s regular attacks and its Ash of War may scale differently; do not assume that the bonus applies identically to both.
Physical Defense
Strength also increases Physical Defense, with major breakpoints at approximately 30, 40, and 60 Strength. These are defensive breakpoints, not weapon-damage caps.
Dexterity: weapon damage, casting speed, and fall damage
Weapon attack power
For many physical Dexterity weapons, 60 and 80 Dexterity are the important damage breakpoints, while 99 remains the absolute maximum with very poor returns afterward. The often-repeated 20/55/80 chart is a generalized shorthand rather than a guarantee for every Keen, Standard, Lightning, or unique weapon.
Casting speed: 70 effective Dexterity
Maximum casting speed is reached at 70 effective Dexterity. Effective Dexterity can include virtual Dexterity from equipment:
Rank #3
- Radagon Icon: +30 virtual Dexterity.
- Azur’s Glintstone Staff: +40 virtual Dexterity.
- Beloved Stardust: +99 virtual Dexterity.
Virtual Dexterity affects casting speed only. It does not satisfy weapon requirements, increase weapon scaling, reduce fall damage, or act as ordinary Dexterity for other purposes. Therefore, a caster can reach maximum casting speed with a combination of displayed Dexterity and equipment bonuses without investing 70 points into Dexterity. See the Dexterity mechanics.
Fall damage
Dexterity begins reducing fall damage at approximately 21 Dexterity and reaches its maximum effect at 99. It does not increase the maximum survivable fall distance: a fall that is inherently lethal remains lethal.

Intelligence affects sorcery requirements, Intelligence-scaling weapon damage, staff Sorcery Scaling, and Magic Defense.
Weapon attack
Many magic or elemental weapon components show common breakpoints around 20, 50, and 80 Intelligence. The exact gains depend on the weapon, affinity, upgrade level, and whether Intelligence affects physical, magic, or split damage. A magic-infused weapon and a unique split-damage weapon should not be assumed to follow the same curve.
Sorcery scaling
For many staves, practical Sorcery Scaling breakpoints are 60 and 80 Intelligence. This is not a universal sorcery cap: the equipped staff determines the curve. Some staves are front-loaded, back-loaded, hybrid, or otherwise unusual. Equip the specific staff and inspect its Sorcery Scaling in the Status or equipment information screen instead of relying on a generic Intelligence chart.
Magic Defense
Intelligence’s Magic Defense effect has separate breakpoints at approximately 20, 35, and 60 Intelligence. These should not be confused with the 20/50/80 weapon pattern or the 60/80 staff-scaling pattern. The common claim that Intelligence “always caps at 60” is therefore incomplete. See the Intelligence data.

Faith: weapons, incantations, and Sacred Seals
Faith affects incantation requirements, Faith-scaling weapons, Sacred Seal Incantation Scaling, and certain elemental damage components.
Weapon attack
Many Faith-based elemental components have common breakpoints around 20, 50, and 80 Faith. The actual return depends on the weapon, upgrade level, affinity, and whether Faith contributes to physical, fire, holy, or split damage.
Incantation scaling
For many Sacred Seals, the practical Incantation Scaling breakpoints are 60 and 80 Faith. Incantations do not have one universal Faith cap: the equipped Seal supplies the scaling curve. Hybrid Seals may benefit from Strength, Intelligence, or Arcane and can have different optimal stat distributions.
As with staves, equip the exact Seal you plan to use and compare the displayed Incantation Scaling. Treating 60 Faith as an absolute endpoint can leave damage on the table for Seals that continue scaling strongly toward 80. See the general weapon and catalyst scaling overview.
Arcane: the most frequently misunderstood caps
Arcane affects weapon attack scaling, some fire and physical components, status buildup on qualifying weapons, Discovery, Holy Defense, Vitality, and certain catalyst calculations. Its damage and status curves are not interchangeable.
Weapon attack
Common Arcane weapon-damage breakpoints include:
- 50 Arcane: often important for elemental components.
- 60 Arcane: often important for physical Arcane scaling.
- 80 Arcane: a final major attack-power breakpoint for many weapons.
- 99 Arcane: the absolute attribute maximum.
The best value varies substantially between Occult weapons, Rivers of Blood, Dragon Communion weapons, and other Arcane-scaling arms. Inspect the specific weapon rather than applying one Arcane chart to every build.
Status buildup: 45 and 60
For weapons whose buildup qualifies for Arcane scaling, the major status breakpoints are approximately:
- 45 Arcane: the largest practical efficiency breakpoint.
- 60 Arcane: a second, much weaker breakpoint.
Buildup can continue increasing after 60, but the gains are very small. Arcane must actually scale the weapon—naturally or through an appropriate affinity—for Arcane to affect its buildup. Arcane does not automatically increase every status effect on every weapon. In particular, Frostbite and Scarlet Rot should not simply be assumed to follow the standard bleed or poison curve. See the status-scaling explanation and the documented community discussion of status exceptions at Reddit.
Grease-based status is also more nuanced than “grease never scales with Arcane.” The weapon’s own scaling properties matter, and Arcane-scaling weapons that can accept buffs are an important exception to that simplified rule.
Arcane catalysts
The Dragon Communion Seal and Albinauric Staff use catalyst-specific Arcane curves. Their spell scaling and status-buildup scaling are separate calculations, so “Arcane caps at 45” is not a reliable rule for catalyst spell damage.
Patch 1.04 reduced status-buildup scaling from spells and incantations cast with the Albinauric Staff and Dragon Communion Seal. Pre-1.04 testing is therefore not a dependable basis for current recommendations.
Holy Defense and Vitality
Arcane’s defensive effects have their own breakpoints:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Holy Defense: 20, 35, and 60 Arcane.
- Vitality: 15, 40, and 60 Arcane.
These do not match Arcane’s weapon-damage or status-buildup breakpoints. The Arcane tables separate these effects.
Practical stopping points for common builds
Use these as starting targets, then adjust according to your weapon, catalyst, equipment load, and level bracket:
- Vigor: 40 during progression; 60 for a high-survivability endgame build.
- Mind: 38 if one fully upgraded blue flask should refill your bar; 50–60 when frequent spell or skill use demands it.
- Endurance: 50 for efficient stamina; enough beyond that to meet your equip-load or Robustness requirements.
- Strength: 60 or 80 for many physical weapons; 54 can be efficient when two-handing.
- Dexterity: 60 or 80 for many weapons; 70 effective Dexterity for maximum casting speed.
- Intelligence: 60 or 80 depending on the staff, spells, and weapon.
- Faith: 60 or 80 depending on the Sacred Seal, incantations, and weapon.
- Arcane: 45 for efficient status buildup, 60 for a stronger status/weapon investment, and 80 for many weapon-damage setups.
These are optimization targets, not mandatory limits. A PvP level bracket may favor stopping earlier, while a particular weapon or hybrid catalyst may justify continuing past a familiar breakpoint.
How to verify a cap for your own build
- Rest at a Site of Grace and choose Level Up to raise an attribute with runes.
- Equip the exact weapon, staff, or Sacred Seal you intend to use, including its upgrade level and affinity.
- Open the Status screen and record attack power, Sorcery Scaling, Incantation Scaling, stamina, FP, or the relevant defensive value.
- Preview or apply one level at a time around the suspected breakpoint.
- Compare the actual increase rather than assuming a generic table applies.
The Status screen includes attributes, attack power, defense power, and resistances. Equipment and temporary bonuses can make Status values differ from the Level Up preview; the Level Up screen does not consistently include every equipment-based attribute bonus. For the most useful comparison, check the final equipped Status values.

Common stat-cap myths corrected
- “Every stat has one soft cap.” No. One attribute can have different curves for every system it affects.
- “The hard cap is 60 or 80.” Usually no. Those are common major soft caps; the universal attribute maximum is 99.
- “Mind hard-caps at 40.” No. 38 Mind is a Flask breakpoint, while FP continues scaling through 60 and beyond.
- “Endurance hard-caps at 50.” No. Stamina becomes inefficient after 50, but Equip Load and Robustness continue rising.
- “Strength always uses 20/55/80.” No. Weapon, affinity, damage type, and upgrade level change the curve.
- “Incantations cap at 60 Faith.” No. Sacred Seals determine Incantation Scaling, and many continue improving toward 80.
- “Bleed hard-caps at 45 Arcane.” No. 45 is the major efficiency point; 60 and smaller post-60 gains still exist when the weapon qualifies.
- “Two-handing stops Strength at 99.” No. Two-handing multiplies effective Strength, which can exceed 99 without raising the displayed attribute above 99.
- “Launch guides are automatically accurate.” No. Patch 1.04 changed lower-level FP and stamina growth and reduced certain catalyst status-scaling behavior.
