Fallout’s strongest opening is Fallout 4’s: it turns the familiar image of nuclear destruction into a personal shock, then gives the player an immediate reason to enter the wasteland. This is a subjective ranking of eight game openings, judged by narrative hook, visual storytelling, narration, pacing, and how well each sequence establishes the protagonist’s role and next objective—not an official or consensus list.
How this ranking works
The list covers the eight games for which the Fallout Wiki’s cutscene index lists opening sequences: the original Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76. That means the often-overlooked 2004 console game Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is included, even though a 2024 fan compilation omitted it. The broader franchise list also includes games and spin-offs without an opening in that index; this ranking is about the listed game openings, not every Fallout-branded release.
Each entry is ranked for how well its opening works as an opening: whether it catches attention, makes effective use of images and narration, controls its pace, and hands the player a clear situation or goal. A sequence can be memorable without being the best at all five. Premise and chronology are cross-checked against Bethesda’s Fallout timeline; details about sequence structure and narrators come from the fan-maintained Fallout Wiki and should be understood in that context.
1. Fallout 4
Fallout 4 makes the apocalypse intimate. It begins before the Great War with a playable character in a recognizably ordinary pre-war home, then pivots from domestic calm to the bombs and the character’s placement in cryogenic stasis. Waking in the future turns a huge historical rupture into a personal one: the player has lost a life, a home, and the world they knew.

That contrast is its decisive advantage. The sequence gives the setting a vivid visual before-and-after, moves briskly from premise to crisis, and makes the player’s role legible without an extended explanation of wasteland history. The shock of waking also creates immediate forward momentum. Among these openings, it best combines spectacle with a human stake.
2. Fallout: New Vegas
New Vegas starts with a broad view of the Mojave and the Strip, then narrows to the Courier’s delivery job and the person who turns it into a near-fatal mystery. Benny’s opening dialogue ends with the line, “Truth is… the game was rigged from the start.” Spoken by Benny in the sequence, it works as both a threat and a promise that the Courier’s story is already tangled in someone else’s scheme.
The transition from regional overview to a close, personal betrayal is economical and memorable. The Courier’s immediate objective is clear enough to start the story, while the shooting leaves the larger question—why this delivery mattered—open. Its main trade-off is that it initially positions the protagonist through a job and an ambush rather than the more personal upheaval of the top-ranked opening.

3. Fallout 3
Fallout 3 makes the player’s departure from Vault 101 the central dramatic event. The Lone Wanderer leaves the shelter to search for their father, giving the opening a clear family-driven objective and a strong transition from enclosed safety to an unknown wasteland.
Its strength is player setup: the Vault is not just an explanation of where the protagonist came from but the place they must leave behind. That makes stepping outside feel like a meaningful threshold. The opening is less built around a single startling reversal than Fallout 4 or New Vegas, but its simple, personal goal gives it dependable narrative pull.
4. Fallout
The original Fallout pairs an introductory cinematic with still images narrated by Ron Perlman. Its premise is immediately functional: a Vault Dweller must find a working water chip to save their Vault. The story gives the player a concrete need and a reason to leave shelter, while the narration and imagery establish a world shaped by nuclear war.

The format has an austere, storybook quality that suits the game’s bleak premise. It is less focused on a tightly staged personal scene than the higher-ranked openings, but the objective is exceptionally clear: the Vault’s survival depends on the player’s journey.
5. Fallout 76
Fallout 76 begins with the residents of Vault 76 emerging into Appalachia, 25 years after the Great War. Instead of sending one protagonist out to solve a private crisis, it frames the player as one member of a larger group returning to a devastated world.

6. Fallout 2
Fallout 2 sends the Chosen One from Arroyo in search of a G.E.C.K., a device needed to help the drought-stricken village. Like the original, it is built around a community’s survival and a practical mission that takes the protagonist into the wasteland.
The stakes are easy to understand, and the connection to Arroyo gives the journey a purpose beyond adventure for its own sake. It ranks below the original because the opening’s central appeal is mainly the premise and assignment: it establishes what needs doing, but does not land as sharply as the best entries’ visual or dramatic hooks.

Fallout Tactics earns a place in a ranking of Fallout openings, but the available sequence descriptions provide less detail about its specific scenes than they do for several other entries. Its inclusion matters: lists that cover only the numbered games and the most widely discussed spin-offs leave out a game whose intro is listed alongside theirs in the Fallout Wiki index.

With less substantiated scene-level information available for comparison, its position here reflects the limits of what can be confidently assessed about its hook, narration, and handoff to play—not a claim that the sequence has no strengths.
8. Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel
The 2004 console game Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is the least familiar entry on many opening compilations, but it belongs in an “all” ranking that includes the sequences listed in the Fallout Wiki index. The Wiki identifies Tony Jay as its narrator, an exception to the Ron Perlman narration used in many other Fallout openings.
That distinct voice gives the sequence a point of difference, but the available descriptions do not establish enough about its visual storytelling, pacing, or player setup to make a stronger comparative case. It lands last here because the other entries offer clearer, better-supported reasons for their positions—not because a universal ranking has settled the question.
What makes these openings different
Across the series, an opening can work by setting a personal crisis in motion, giving the player a practical mission, or establishing a world and then handing control over to exploration. Fallout 4 and New Vegas stand out for their dramatic pivots; the original and Fallout 2 make survival objectives central; Fallout 3 makes leaving home part of the player’s story; and Fallout 76 frames emergence as a shared beginning. The lower-ranked positions are less certain where detailed descriptions of the sequences are limited, so treat the ordering as an editorial judgment rather than a definitive measure of quality.
