The lists below cover major standalone games and prominent spin-offs—not every port, collection, or regional rollout. For a straightforward story playthrough, use the chronology list and treat the overlap between Halo 2 and Halo 3: ODST as an intentional simplification.

This list follows the original release year for each major game. Remakes and remasters appear where they launched, not where their stories take place.

- Halo 5: Guardians — 2015
- Halo Wars 2 — 2017
- Halo: Fireteam Raven — 2018
- Halo Infinite — 2021
- Halo: Campaign Evolved — July 28, 2026; July 29 in Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of Combat Evolved with expanded material, so it is the newest release in this list but retells the first game’s story. The dates above are not a platform-by-platform ledger: ports, collections, and arcade deployments can have separate release dates. Halo Waypoint’s collection rollout overview identifies the games and campaign content included in The Master Chief Collection, including Reach joining the PC collection.
Halo games in chronological story order
For a broad narrative playthrough, use this order. It follows the games’ main story periods, not every mission timestamp.

- Halo Wars — set in 2531, long before the original trilogy’s 2552 events.
- Halo: Reach — set in 2552 immediately before the Pillar of Autumn reaches Installation 04.
- Halo: Combat Evolved — begins at Installation 04 on September 19, 2552.
- Halo: Fireteam Raven — its arcade story overlaps Combat Evolved at Installation 04; it is not a wholly separate later chapter.
- Halo 2 and Halo 3: ODST — their events overlap during the Covenant invasion of New Mombasa. For an uninterrupted playthrough, finish Halo 2 and then play ODST; this is a convenient sequence rather than strict event chronology.
- Halo 3 — continues the conflict of the original trilogy in 2552.
- Halo 4 — takes place in 2557.
- Halo 5: Guardians — follows Halo 4 in the postwar period.
- Halo Wars 2 — set in 2559, with the Spirit of Fire crew returning after a long absence.
- Halo Infinite — its campaign begins in late 2559 and continues through May 2560. Halo Waypoint dates the opening stretch, from the warship Gbraakon to “Pelican Down,” to May 28–29, 2560 (Halo Waypoint campaign timeline).
Optional Halo side games and remakes
Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike
Halo: Spartan Assault and Halo: Spartan Strike are spin-offs, not required installments in Master Chief’s central story. Their scenarios include distinct events and simulations, so they do not fit neatly into one slot in the main chronology. Spartan Assault is dated to 2013 and set in 2554 in the series catalog (game reference).
Anniversary editions and Campaign Evolved
Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2: Anniversary retell existing story installments; play them in place of, or after, their originals rather than as new chronological chapters. Campaign Evolved likewise belongs alongside Combat Evolved in story order, despite its 2026 release.

Where to play multiple Halo campaigns
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a practical option for playing several campaign entries together, but the games and content available can differ by platform and edition. Check the specific store or product listing for the included titles before buying; do not assume every release in the lists above is part of the collection.
