The roster and exact prerequisites vary by edition, so the 22-job list below should be treated as a reference roster—not a universal chart—and the examples are not a complete unlock table.
How job progression and unlocks work
Battle actions can award JP for the job a unit is currently using. Earn enough JP and that individual job’s level rises; certain job levels then qualify the unit to access other jobs. Job level and character level are separate measures: an overall level increase does not substitute for a required level in a particular job.
JP also buys abilities within a job. Once learned, many abilities can be equipped in ability slots while the unit uses a different job, letting a character combine skills from classes they have developed.
The Final Fantasy Tactics job roster
Tactics League lists 22 interchangeable jobs in its roster. The list is useful as an overview, but it does not establish a universal count across releases.
#1 Best Overall
- FINAL FANTASY TACTICS –The Ivalice Chronicles– Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a double-sided poster.
- Combat - Lead your party in exhilarating encounters where strategic positioning and forward planning determine the outcome. Use the varied terrain of 3D battlefields to your advantage, skillfully manipulate the turn order, and victory will be yours for the taking.
- Character Growth and Customization - Combine a wide variety of jobs and abilities to craft your very own strategies. As your party members grow, they will gain access to more jobs, each with its own unique abilities. Once learned, abilities can be used even after changing to another job. With over 20 jobs to master—including white mage, black mage, dragoon, and many others from the FINAL FANTASY series—and hundreds of abilities to learn, you have the freedom to experiment and discover the combinations that best suit your party. Chocobos and other creatures can also be tamed and led into battle.
- Two Versions: Enhanced and Classic - With improved graphics, fully voiced dialogue, and refined gameplay, the enhanced version provides the perfect way to immerse yourself in the world of Ivalice. Along with the fine-tuning of several features and battle mechanics, the inclusion of the more accessible "Squire" difficulty setting makes the enhanced version an excellent starting point for first-time players. The classic version unites the graphics and gameplay of the original 1997 version with the renowned War of the Lions translation for a unique way to experience this beloved title.

The names in some editions differ: for example, references may call the White Mage path “Priest” and the Black Mage path “Wizard.” Onion Knight is associated with The War of the Lions in the cited job references. The original PlayStation release, The War of the Lions, and The Ivalice Chronicles should not be assumed to share identical rosters or unlock rules. For the version distinction and roster context, see Final Fantasy Wiki’s job overview and Tactics League’s job list.
Starting paths and confirmed unlock examples
New recruits begin on one of two foundational paths: Squire, the physical starting job, or Chemist, the magical starting job. The available references establish a few illustrative prerequisites, but not every requirement for every edition.
Rank #2
- White Mage and Black Mage paths: The overview gives Chemist Job Level 2 as an example prerequisite for Priest (White Mage) and Wizard (Black Mage).
- Knight and Archer: A surfaced job reference gives Squire Job Level 2 for each.
- Mime and Onion Knight: References indicate that both involve developing multiple jobs. The complete prerequisite sets are not established here; Onion Knight is identified with The War of the Lions in the cited reference.
For these examples, the number refers to the level of the named job—not the unit’s total character level. Do not treat these examples as an exhaustive, edition-neutral unlock chart.
How to plan a unit’s job progression
- Pick a destination job. Identify the job you want the unit to access, then check the prerequisite tree for that specific game edition.
- Track each required job separately. A unit may need to switch jobs and raise more than one job level; the unit’s overall level alone does not fulfill those requirements.
- Earn JP while taking useful actions. JP advances the current job and can also be spent on that job’s abilities. Plan for both unlock progress and the skills you want the unit to carry into later classes.
- Equip learned abilities across jobs where available. A class change does not erase the value of abilities already learned; set them in the appropriate ability slots for the build you want.
Why there is no single reliable unlock table for every edition
Job rosters and prerequisites differ among Final Fantasy Tactics releases, and a surfaced job guide explicitly framed for The Ivalice Chronicles was not accessible for verification. A fan-wiki reference also describes edition differences, including an exception in the North American PlayStation release. Those differences make it unsafe to combine requirements into one chart without specifying and verifying the edition.

The Ivalice Chronicles is an expanded remaster released on September 30, 2025, for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows, according to the cited overview. That release date and platform list do not by themselves confirm its complete job tree. For release context, see the Final Fantasy Tactics overview. What to verify in your copy
- Confirm the exact edition and region before following a prerequisite list.
- Check the in-game job menu for the levels your unit still needs in each prerequisite job.
- Use a version-specific chart for multi-job unlocks such as Mime or Onion Knight rather than inferring their full requirements from a partial example.
