Their settings span early-1900s Sicily, 1930s Lost Heaven, 1940s–50s Empire Bay, and 1968 New Bordeaux. For a chronological playthrough that includes the The Old Country expansion, play its main campaign first, then Man of Honor, before moving on to Mafia: Definitive Edition.
All Mafia games in chronological order
- Mafia: The Old Country — early-1900s Sicily; its Man of Honor expansion is set in winter 1905.
- Mafia: Definitive Edition — 1930s Lost Heaven, Illinois.
- Mafia II — 1940s–50s Empire Bay, New York. The remastered release is titled Mafia II: Definitive Edition.
- Mafia III — 1968 New Bordeaux, Louisiana. The Definitive Edition is titled Mafia III: Definitive Edition.
This guide uses “all games” to mean the four current mainline entries identified in 2K’s announcement of the four-game Omertà Collection. It does not claim to list every mobile or ancillary release.
1. Mafia: The Old Country — early-1900s Sicily
Set in early-1900s Sicily, The Old Country follows Enzo Favara as he joins Don Torrisi’s crime family. It is the earliest-set mainline game, though it was released much later than the original Mafia. In the 2K announcement, Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes called it a “focused, linear experience” and described it as a “mafia origin story.”
The Man of Honor expansion adds two story chapters in winter 1905. Enzo works alongside Ennio Salieri, whom 2K describes as the future Don of the Salieri crime family and the principal antagonist of Mafia: Definitive Edition. The expansion also adds Free Ride challenges and jobs. The practical chronological sequence is to finish the base campaign and then play the expansion; 2K confirms the expansion’s time period and characters, but does not prescribe that play order.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is set in 1930s Lost Heaven, Illinois. Cabdriver Tommy Angelo is drawn into the Salieri family’s criminal world during the Prohibition era. The official PlayStation series listing gives the setting as the 1930s, rather than specific start and end years.
This edition is a remake of the original Mafia. 2K describes it as rebuilt from the ground up, with an updated script, expanded character backstories, additional cutscenes, and new gameplay sequences. Its place in the timeline is after The Old Country and before Mafia II.

Chronological order or release order?
Chronological order follows when each story takes place; release order follows when the games were published. The chronology above begins with The Old Country, while 2K says the franchise began with Mafia in 2002. That makes story order different from starting with the first game released. The sources cited here do not establish a complete release-date list for all four entries, so this guide does not give one.

- FAST-PACED SOCIAL DEDUCTION: Experience high-stakes bluffing, accusations, and last-second reversals in just 10-15 minutes per round. Perfect for rapid-fire rematches and quick game nights.
- UNIQUE ROLE DRAFTING MECHANIC: Draft your role instead of receiving it randomly. Control your strategy and shape the deception before the first accusation even begins.
- NO PLAYER ELIMINATION: Everyone stays engaged from start to finish - no sitting out, no sidelines, no downtime. All 6-12 players remain in the action until the final shootout.
- EASY TO LEARN AND TEACH: Clear rules and minimal setup mean your can start playing in minutes, with strategic depth that rewards experienced players.
- ENDLESS REPLAYABILITY: Shifting alliances, strategic role drafting, and dynamic social interaction ensure no two games unfold the same way.
Neither order is established as the best choice for every player. Choose chronological order to follow the fictional eras in sequence; choose release order if you want to begin with the franchise’s original entry. The four titles are separate crime dramas, not a single uninterrupted protagonist story.

Collections and what they include
2K describes the digital Mafia: The Omertà Collection as containing The Old Country Definitive Edition with DLC and the three earlier Definitive Editions. Its announcement lists Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The announcement’s introductory price was limited-time, so it should not be treated as the current price.
The older Mafia: Trilogy collection contains the first three mainline entries, not The Old Country. 2K documented a physical PS4 edition for select EMEA and Asia regions; current stock is not established by that announcement. Check the platform store or retailer for current availability and contents.
