Each is a special tome tied to a vocation Maister, but there is no single unlock formula: some are quest rewards, some depend on story progress or finding a character, and several routes involve earning approval. This guide gives the route for each teaching and distinguishes the tome from the skill it unlocks.
What Maister’s Teachings are—and why lists differ
PlayStation describes Maister’s Teachings as special tomes that a Maister may grant as the Arisen deepens a relationship with them and earns their approval. A tome unlocks a powerful skill for its vocation; the official overview does not say every Maister uses the same approval threshold or quest condition. PlayStation’s vocation overview also describes Heavenly Shot as using all the player’s stamina and Wild Furie as dealing both magick and physical damage.
The practical roster is 12 skills across 10 vocations. A skill database updated June 16, 2026, lists 11, apparently leaving out one of Sorcerer’s two teachings; two walkthrough lists enumerate 12. The routes below include both Sorcerer rewards rather than treating the shorter database list as complete.
All Maister skills and how to unlock them
Quest names and character locations are given below as route markers. Several quests involve story events, and guidance on affinity or quest sequencing can differ between walkthroughs; when a character does not offer a tome, finish the named quest chain and speak with them again rather than assuming the teaching is permanently unavailable.
#1 Best Overall
| Vocation | Maister | Teaching tome | Skill unlocked | Route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Lennart | Soldier’s Code | Riotous Fury | Progress the Melve defense and its village follow-up, including Readvent of Calamity, then speak with Lennart and earn his approval. |
| Archer | Taliesin | Hunter’s Secret | Heavenly Shot | Complete Gift of the Bow and A Trial of Archery, then return to Taliesin in Sacred Arbor after waiting and speak to him. |
| Thief | Srail | Pilferer’s Handbook | Formless Feint | Granted through main-story progression; no separate quest route is identified in the walkthrough list. |
| Warrior | Beren | Champion’s Fable | Arc of Might | Complete Claw Them Into Shape and Beren’s Final Lesson, then find him at his Childhood Home south of Checkpoint Rest Town. Some guides note affinity may matter. |
| Mage | Eini | Conjurer’s Jottings | Celestial Paean | Complete Spellbound by delivering all five real grimoires to Trysha. Speak with Trysha again after the quest, then talk to Eini for this separate Mage teaching. |
| Sorcerer | Trysha | Enchanter’s Almanac | Meteoron | Complete Spellbound using the five real grimoires. The quest’s Sorcerer reward is Meteoron from Trysha; do not confuse it with Eini’s Celestial Paean. |
| Sorcerer | Myrddin | Not named in the route table | Maelstrom | Find Myrddin in Checkpoint Rest Town and satisfy his request for five grimoires. A related guide identifies the request quest as Sorcerer’s Appraisal. |
| Trickster | Luz | Theurgist’s Rite | Dragon’s Delusion | At Reverent Shrine, speak with Luz downstairs to unlock Trickster, then climb the ladder to find her physical form on the rooftop and receive the tome. |
| Mystic Spearhand | Sigurd | Paladin’s Enigmata | Wild Furie | Meet him during the Dragon’s Dogma story encounters at Dragonsbreath Tower or later in Harve Village and earn his approval. If he is not at the tower, check the Coastal Hut in Harve. |
| Magick Archer | Cliodhna | Spellbow’s Paradox | Martyr’s Bolt | Complete Put a Spring in Thy Step on Agamen Volcanic Island. After the Magick Archer vocation unlocks, speak with Cliodhna for the tome. |
| Warfarer | Lamond | Grandmaster’s Path | Rearmament | Complete The Sotted Sage, which involves Newt Liqueur and unlocks Warfarer, then speak to Lamond again for the teaching. |
Route details and common snags
Melve: Lennart’s Soldier’s Code
Advance the defense and follow-up events in Melve, including Readvent of Calamity, before looking to Lennart for Soldier’s Code. This is not simply a matter of finding him in the village at the start of the game: the route depends on progressing the Melve events, and approval is part of the reported route. Guides differ on the exact affinity contribution, so no particular gift or guaranteed gift recipe can be relied on here.
Sacred Arbor: Taliesin’s Hunter’s Secret
Finish both Gift of the Bow and A Trial of Archery, then give the quest sequence time to resolve before returning to Taliesin. One guide notes that a Pawn with the Woodland Wordsmith specialization may help with dialogue in Sacred Arbor. If Taliesin’s response appears stuck, check that the quests are complete and that you can understand the relevant dialogue; do not assume the tome is an automatic reward at the end of the first quest.
Rank #2
Beren and the two Spellbound rewards
For Beren, complete both named quests and visit his Childhood Home south of Checkpoint Rest Town. Walkthroughs mention affinity, but they do not consistently establish that winning a duel is mandatory for the teaching.
Spellbound is the shared grimoire quest associated with two different vocations. Its Sorcerer teaching is Trysha’s Meteoron, while the Mage teaching Celestial Paean comes from her grandmother Eini. Keep the characters and vocation rewards separate when following the post-quest conversations. For Myrddin’s Maelstrom, the route is a separate request in Checkpoint Rest Town involving five grimoires.

Sigurd and the island routes
Sigurd may be encountered at Dragonsbreath Tower or later in Harve Village, depending on story progress. If he is not available at the tower after the dragon encounter, check the Coastal Hut in Harve. Cliodhna’s route is tied to Put a Spring in Thy Step on Agamen Volcanic Island; complete that quest before expecting her to grant Spellbow’s Paradox.
What each skill does and what it costs
Descriptions below summarize the available skill entries; exact numerical values, timing, and patch-sensitive mechanics are not specified here. Check the skill description in your current game for precise details.
| Vocation | Skill | Role and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Riotous Fury | Unleashes rapid heavy strikes. It consumes substantial stamina and can leave the Fighter vulnerable if the opening strike misses. |
| Archer | Heavenly Shot | Fires a powerful arrow whose potency depends on remaining stamina; it consumes all stamina. PlayStation’s description explicitly calls out the all-stamina cost. |
| Thief | Formless Feint | Provides evasion while active, but continuously drains stamina. |
| Warrior | Arc of Might | Channels strength into one heavy blow at the cost of all stamina. |
| Mage | Celestial Paean | Creates supportive light that improves allies’ stamina recovery and speed and reduces damage taken. It drains the caster’s stamina and knocks them down. |
| Sorcerer | Meteoron | Calls down a broad-area meteor shower. The Sorcerer is immobilized while incanting; its area makes it better suited to open spaces. |
| Sorcerer | Maelstrom | Creates a whirlwind. The Sorcerer is immobilized while incanting; its area is described as effective in cramped spaces. |
| Trickster | Dragon’s Delusion | Creates an illusory dragon that frightens or trips enemies rather than directly dealing damage. |
| Mystic Spearhand | Wild Furie | Combines repeated slashes and magick attacks. Further inputs extend the attack at a stamina cost; PlayStation describes it as dealing physical and magick damage. |
| Magick Archer | Martyr’s Bolt | Fires a powerful magick bolt. It temporarily reduces maximum health, and the accumulated loss gauge affects its potency. |
| Warfarer | Rearmament | Switches among the weapons carried by the Warfarer in a chosen order. |
Using a teaching tome
Once acquired, a Maister’s Teaching is the item that unlocks its associated skill; the tome name is not the skill name. Use or interact with the teaching from your inventory to learn the vocation skill, then equip it through that vocation’s skill setup. The effects and costs above can help decide whether to build around it: skills that consume all stamina or temporarily reduce maximum health demand a different opening and recovery plan than a sustained support or evasion skill.
