Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSpoilers for the endgame: The choices that shape Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s finale include who leads the second team, which mage handles the wards, how you assign companions during The Last Gambit, and how Rook deals with Solas. One sacrifice at the Isle of the Gods is unavoidable: either Davrin or Harding dies. Preparation and role assignments can save other companions, but the available guides do not map every possible outcome permutation.
What to do before the point of no return
Use the warning at “When Plans Align” as your last chance to prepare. Once you begin The Last Gambit, you cannot leave to improve relationships, according to Gamer Guides’ The Last Gambit guide.
- Complete each companion’s personal quest to obtain Hero of the Veilguard status. This status can affect survival, including whether the mage taken during the ward decision can be rescued.
- Raise faction strength before the finale. PowerPyx recommends three-star faction strength for its achievement route, and notes that valuables can improve faction rank, including through the Wisp merchant associated with the city destroyed earlier in the story. See the PowerPyx ending guide.
- Finish relevant side quests and consider who will be available for later fights when making assignments.
Which choices at the Isle of the Gods affect companion survival?
Two decisions there have different consequences. Choosing Davrin or Harding to lead the second team determines which one is lost; choosing Bellara or Neve for the wards temporarily removes that mage from the party, but does not by itself make the loss permanent. The Gamer Guides Isle of the Gods guide covers these decisions; PowerPyx also describes the sacrifice and rescue conditions in its ending guide.
Second-team leader: Davrin or Harding
Pick which of the two you are willing to lose. After the fight against Ghilan’nain’s Blight Shield, one of them sacrifices themselves, even on the high-survival route. The choice controls who is tied to the distraction and unavailable afterward; it cannot prevent the sacrifice.

Ward specialist: Bellara or Neve
The mage you send to dismantle the magical wards is taken away and unavailable for a later choice. That is a temporary removal, not an automatic permanent death: PowerPyx says Hero of the Veilguard status is necessary for the selected character to survive and be rescued. Choose with your later party needs and personal priorities in mind.
How to assign companions during The Last Gambit
The sequence sends three companions to support allied factions: one to help the Veil Jumpers deal with wards, one to aid the Antivan Crows against a Venatori mage, and one to help the Grey Wardens or Mourn Watch against a construct. Faction strength, Hero status, and assignment suitability all affect outcomes; a poor fit or insufficient preparation can lead to a permanent death. The guides do not establish one exclusive correct lineup.

These are guide-backed combinations, not a complete compatibility chart. PowerPyx recommends Taash, Lucanis, and Harding for one high-survival route; PC Gamer’s ending guide reports success with Emmrich, Lucanis, and Taash.
The final barricade
While Rook climbs the tower, PC Gamer recommends sending Taash to hold the barricade. This is a guide recommendation rather than a claim that no other choice can succeed.

What leads to the strongest or worst survival outcomes?
For the strongest survival odds
Complete companion quests, build faction strength before the lock-in, and match companions to their assignments. PowerPyx associates this high-survival approach with the achievement “The Ones That Last.” Even a successful route still requires the Davrin-or-Harding sacrifice described above; the guides say the other companions and faction leaders can survive with sound preparation and assignments.
For the worst outcome
The guides describe a route with weak faction strength, unfinished companion quests, and deliberately poor assignments as capable of producing maximum casualties, including Rook in the worst ending. A single bad assignment does not automatically cause that outcome: faction strength and Hero status also factor into survival. The available guidance does not provide an exhaustive matrix for every combination of faction rating, companion status, and assignment.

How can Rook resolve things with Solas?
After Elgar’nan, Rook can try to trick Solas into binding himself to the Veil or confront him in a fight. If Rook has Mythal’s essence, a third option appears: ask Mythal to reason with Solas. PC Gamer identifies the Mythal dialogue prompt as “You don’t have to do this.” It describes that route as redemption-oriented, while the fight is shorter and harsher. The guide’s author, Lauren Morton, writes: “No matter what, Solas winds up bound to The Veil to preserve it and save the world.” This summary and the route descriptions are from PC Gamer’s guide, published November 6, 2024.
How to unlock the secret post-credits scene
Before the point of no return, complete “Regrets of the Dread Wolf” and find all three “Mysterious Circles,” as specified by PowerPyx. These prerequisites unlock the secret post-credits scene and the “The Storm Quelled” achievement. The cited ending guide does not provide a complete collection walkthrough here, so this article does not list locations or claim that these are the only details a player may need.
