Bungie introduced Sentinel in Season 2 and has described the sandbox as an active tuning area, while the latest dated tier list in the sources available here is PC Gamer’s March 20, 2026 ranking. That list placed Triage, Assassin, and Thief in S; Destroyer and Rook in A; Recon and Vandal in B. It predates Sentinel and should be read as one author’s judgment at that time—not as a current meta or official verdict.
For a useful choice today, match the shell to your job: mobility and escape, intel, combat control, loot, or team survival. The comparisons below use Bungie’s published role descriptions and abilities; the evaluations are editorial, not measured performance scores. Check the current in-game roster and ability names, especially after updates.
What “ranked” means here
This is a criteria-based guide, not a universal leaderboard. Bungie describes Runner Shells as gameplay archetypes with distinct kits and roles, including combat, stealth, intel, mobility, loot acquisition, and medical support (Bungie’s Runner Shells overview). The relative value of those roles changes with your priorities, your squad, and your build.
The table separates the March 20, 2026 editorial ranking from a practical role-based read. PC Gamer’s ranking is useful historical context, but its placements are not official and do not establish current performance. Sentinel, introduced in Season 2, was not included in that earlier list. Bungie’s later Season 2 overview and combat preview place balance and builds in an actively tuned sandbox.

| Shell | March 20, 2026 PC Gamer tier | Published role and kit focus | Best fit by role (editorial) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Triage | S | Medical support and team survival | Squads that value healing and keeping teammates in the fight |
| Assassin | S | Stealth, smoke, and camouflage | Players who want to control engagements through concealment |
| Thief | S | Loot location and acquisition; grapple | Loot-focused runs and players who value repositioning |
| Destroyer | A | Combat specialist with barricade, missiles, and thrusters | Direct fights and players who want combat tools with mobility |
| Rook | A | Role and kit details not stated in the cited Bungie overview; consult the current in-game description | Not rated here: the available role evidence is insufficient for a useful comparison |
| Recon | B | Intel through echo pulses, drones, and holographic footstep trails | Players and squads that prioritize information before committing |
| Vandal | B | Speed and disruption | Players who favor fast movement and disrupting opponents |
| Sentinel | Not included in the March list; introduced in Season 2 | Area defense and space control; projectile-defending Prime ability, immobilizing mine, defensive and motion-tracking traits | Holding ground and defending an area |
The tier column is PC Gamer’s dated assessment, not a score derived from game statistics. Its guide does not supply a representative current dataset, and the sources available here provide no shell win-rate, pick-rate, or comparable performance figures.
Which shell should you play?
For team survival: Triage
Triage is the clearest fit if your priority is medical support and helping a squad survive. PC Gamer ranked it S in March 2026, but that placement should not be mistaken for proof that it is currently the strongest shell. Choose it for the support role, not an assumed tier advantage.
For stealth: Assassin
Assassin’s smoke and camouflage suit players who want to approach or disengage under concealment. Its value is tied to how you use stealth to shape an encounter; it is not a universal substitute for mobility, information, or direct combat tools.

For loot and repositioning: Thief
Thief is built around locating and acquiring loot, with a grapple for movement. That combination makes it a natural option when your run centers on gathering items and moving through the map, rather than providing a dedicated healing or area-defense role.
For direct combat: Destroyer
Destroyer is Bungie’s combat specialist, with a barricade, missiles, and thrusters. Consider it when you want a kit oriented toward fighting and moving through combat situations. Its March 2026 A-tier placement is historical editorial opinion, not current performance evidence.
For information: Recon
Recon’s echo pulses, drones, and holographic footstep trails emphasize intelligence. This is a practical fit when you value learning where threats may be before your team commits. The benefit is information; it depends on your squad being able to act on it.
For speed and disruption: Vandal
Vandal emphasizes speed and disruption. Pick it when fast movement and unsettling an opponent’s plans are more appealing than healing, stealth, or dedicated loot acquisition. The sources provide no current statistics that would justify treating its older B-tier placement as a measure of present strength.
For holding space: Sentinel
Sentinel arrived in Season 2 with a focus on controlling space and defending areas. Bungie describes a Prime ability that defends against projectiles, an immobilizing mine, and defensive and motion-tracking traits (Season 2 overview). That makes it the role-based choice for a player who wants to protect an area, but the published role description alone does not establish how it ranks against other shells in current play.
For Rook: check the current in-game kit
PC Gamer placed Rook in A in March 2026. The Bungie role overview cited here does not provide enough detail about Rook’s role or abilities to compare it responsibly with the other shells. Read its current in-game description before choosing it; do not infer that the old tier placement is a current recommendation.

Compare shells by the job you need done
These are role-based comparisons inferred from Bungie’s descriptions, not official numeric ratings. “Squad fit” indicates whether the published role most naturally supports a group objective; it does not mean a shell cannot be played solo.
| Priority | Most directly aligned shells | Why | What this does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo escape and survivability | Assassin, Thief, Destroyer | Assassin offers concealment; Thief has a grapple; Destroyer has thrusters. These are mobility or engagement tools named in the role descriptions. | No source here compares their survival rates or establishes a universal best solo pick. |
| Team utility and information | Triage, Recon | Triage is medical support; Recon’s kit gathers intelligence through pulses, drones, and trails. | The sources do not quantify how often those tools change an outcome. |
| Mobility | Thief, Destroyer, Vandal | Thief has a grapple, Destroyer has thrusters, and Vandal emphasizes speed. | These role labels do not provide comparable movement speeds or escape success data. |
| Combat control | Sentinel, Destroyer, Assassin | Sentinel defends space and can immobilize; Destroyer has combat tools; Assassin uses smoke and camouflage to influence engagements. | No current head-to-head combat ranking is established. |
| Loot acquisition | Thief | Locating and acquiring loot is its stated role. | No comparative loot-per-run statistics are available here. |
| Squad dependence | Triage and Recon have clearly described team-facing value; other shells have more individually legible movement, stealth, or combat roles | Healing teammates and sharing useful information can depend on coordination; the other roles may be easier to understand as personal tools. | This is a practical reading of role descriptions, not an official solo-versus-squad rating. |
Why shell rankings change with your build
A shell’s baseline role is only part of its value. Bungie says cores are generally shell-specific and can modify abilities, while implants can be used across shells and add stats and perks (Runner Shells overview). That means a tier list that ignores build choices can flatten meaningful differences: two players choosing the same shell may not be using the same ability setup or supporting stats.
Season 2’s design goals reinforce that point. The Marathon Dev Team wrote on May 29, 2026: “We want your choices to feel more intentional, we want to make engaging with our deep systems easier, and we want more parts of your loadout to feel like they truly matter once you’re Tau Ceti-side.” That is a statement of design intent, not evidence that any particular shell is competitively stronger (Bungie’s Season 2 overview).

How to use the March 2026 tier list
PC Gamer’s March 20, 2026 list is a snapshot of one guide author’s judgment: Triage, Assassin, and Thief in S; Destroyer and Rook in A; Recon and Vandal in B. It helps explain how those seven shells were assessed at that date, but it cannot answer whether those placements remain accurate after later tuning or account for Sentinel.
Bungie described Season 2 as a broad sandbox review involving weapons, builds, survival, Runner Shells, and implants (Season 2 overview). Bungie’s roadmap also describes a planned October refresh to progression, rewards, and the live experience, and a December update intended to introduce a new shell (Bungie’s roadmap). Those are plans, not confirmation that the changes have shipped. For a genuinely current tier ordering, check the live game and release notes rather than extending a March ranking past the updates it predates.
Quick Recap
Practical selection checklist
- Pick the job first. Decide whether you need healing, intel, stealth, direct combat, speed, loot acquisition, or area defense.
- Check the current kit. Read the shell’s in-game ability descriptions; updates can change names, functions, and balance.
- Account for your squad. Healing and intel can be more valuable when teammates can coordinate around them; a movement-focused shell may better match an independent play style.
- Choose a build that supports the job. Review shell-specific cores and cross-shell implants, since they can change abilities and add stats or perks.
- Reassess after major tuning. Treat dated tier lists as snapshots, especially when Bungie says it is reviewing Runner Shells and related systems.
