The main Mario Kart release timeline runs from Super Mario Kart in 1992 to Mario Kart World in 2025. Exact launch dates vary by region, so the list below gives each game’s first release year and labels regional dates where available. Arcade, mobile and hybrid releases are covered separately because they do not fit the main console-and-handheld sequence.
Mario Kart games in release order
This chronological list follows the first release of each main home-console or handheld game. Where the launch fell in different calendar years across regions, the first-release year is used for ordering.

The ten-game timeline above is the main console-and-handheld line, not every official release using the Mario Kart name. These releases use different formats and are best kept distinct from that sequence.

- Mario Kart Tour (2019) is the mobile entry. Its service ended on September 29, 2026, at 11 p.m. Pacific, according to a July 8, 2026 report by GamesRadar+, which reported that Nintendo had no offline version scheduled.
- Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit (2020) pairs Nintendo Switch software with a physical, camera-equipped RC kart. Nintendo described it as “a unique addition to the Mario Kart series that links Nintendo Switch to a kart with a built-in camera” in its November 2020 investor presentation.
- Mario Kart Arcade GP is an arcade branch made with Namco/Bandai Namco. Nintendo Life’s catalogue includes Arcade GP Triforce and Arcade GP DX. The available chronology does not establish a complete arcade title list or its full release order, so these are not inserted into the dated sequence above.
Are Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe different games?
Yes. Mario Kart 8 first released for Wii U in 2014; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a separate Nintendo Switch release from 2017. Both belong in a strict release-order list, even though the later title builds on the earlier game. The Booster Course Pass is add-on content for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, not a standalone Mario Kart game, so its waves do not count as separate entries.
Do you need to play Mario Kart games in order?
No. The games are standalone racing packages rather than chapters in a continuing story. Release order is useful for tracing the series’ history or collecting its releases, but there is no narrative prerequisite to starting with a newer game.
