All MIME Locations: Where MIME Appears in Messages, Documents, and Software

MIME locations may refer to message parts, resource references, or software-specific APIs and configuration—not one universal path.

“MIME locations” can mean three different things: where MIME entities sit in an email message, how a MIME document identifies associated resources, or where software exposes MIME types and handling settings. There is no single universal list of MIME locations; the right answer depends on which meaning you need.

Where can MIME appear in a message?

A MIME message consists of a header and a body. The body may contain one entity or a multipart structure with entities nested inside one another. Each entity can have its own MIME headers and content, so MIME is not limited to one location in the message. The RFC Editor’s RFC 8551 describes this structure.

This distinction matters for S/MIME, which can protect an entity below the message’s root and can be applied to different entities in the same message. In other words, locating protected content may require inspecting the MIME tree rather than treating the entire message body as one indivisible item.

What does Content-Location mean?

In an aggregate MIME document, the Content-Location header can identify a resource associated with a MIME part. It is a resource reference, not proof that the recipient can retrieve that resource: availability depends on where the content is hosted and whether the recipient can access it. The RFC Editor explains this use in RFC 2557.

Where do applications expose or configure MIME types?

Applications and operating systems handle MIME types in their own ways. An API that lists MIME types is not a filesystem directory, and a configuration path documented for one platform should not be treated as universal.

Qt: enumerate MIME types through an API

Qt 6’s QMimeDatabase class includes the allMimeTypes() API for enumerating MIME types. This is an application interface, not a list of files on disk. Check the documentation for the Qt version your application uses: QMimeDatabase.

Mutt: configure handlers with mailcap

The Mutt manual documents MIME handling through mailcap-based handlers. This describes Mutt’s application-level behavior; it does not establish a system-wide location for MIME data. See the Mutt manual.

Solaris: consult the documentation for that release

Oracle’s Solaris 11.3 Desktop Administrator’s Guide discusses MIME-related files in the context of that Solaris release. Its locations apply to that platform documentation, not automatically to other Solaris releases or operating systems: Solaris 11.3 Desktop Administrator’s Guide.

Which meaning of “MIME location” do you need?

Meaning What the location refers to Scope
Message structure The root entity or a nested MIME part MIME message structure, described by RFC 8551
Content-Location A reference identifying a resource associated with a part Aggregate MIME documents, described by RFC 2557
MIME type enumeration An API result, such as Qt’s allMimeTypes() A particular software API and version
MIME handling configuration Application or platform-specific handler settings or files The documented application, operating system, and release

For email structure, inspect the message’s MIME parts. For a referenced resource, look for Content-Location and verify access separately. For type detection or handlers, use the documentation for the specific application and platform rather than searching for one universal MIME directory.
