Minecraft’s Spring to Life drop is the first game drop of 2025. It adds biome-linked animal variants, six new wolf sound variants, fresh Overworld plants and ambient effects, plus practical uses for several new blocks. The release is Java Edition 1.21.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70; some generation and interaction details differ by edition, so the notes below identify those differences.
Which versions include Spring to Life?
Spring to Life released as Java Edition 1.21.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70. The feature set is broadly shared, but biome placement, sound, light and some block behavior are edition-specific. Minecraft’s player-facing overview introduces the drop; use the matching edition’s release notes for exact mechanics.
What changed for animals?
Pigs, cows and chickens have biome variants
Pigs, cows and chickens now have warm and cold variants alongside the familiar temperate versions. The biome where an animal spawns determines which variant appears. This changes their appearance, not the basic role of these farm animals.
Sheep wool colors reflect their biome
Sheep also spawn with wool colors influenced by their environment: most are brown in sandy biomes, black in chilly biomes and white in green biomes, according to Minecraft’s overview. This is a naturally spawning color variation; it does not replace the ability to dye wool.

Wolves have six new sound variants
Wolves gained six new sound variants. The Java notes describe differences across ambient, hurt, death, growl, whine and pant sounds, giving wolves more audible variety.
Spawn eggs are easier to identify
Spawn egg visuals were redesigned so each egg has its own appearance, reflecting the mob it spawns. Differences in egg shape relate to the in-world size of the mob, making the items less alike in an inventory.

Fallen trees
Decorative fallen trees can generate as oak, birch, jungle or spruce. Birch has short and long forms, and some fallen trees include mushrooms or vines. Their placement depends on biome: Java’s notes identify exceptions including Bamboo Jungle, Grove, Meadow and River; Flower Forests can have fallen birch but not fallen oak.
Firefly Bushes
Firefly Bushes appear near water and show firefly particles at night. In Java, they generate adjacent to water in Swamps, Mangrove Swamps and Badlands, and near Rivers. They emit light level 2. Their nighttime ambient sounds can play when the bush is not blocked above by a collidable block other than leaves. Bedrock describes natural clumps by water, with additional placement behavior in Swamps.

Leaf Litter can generate in Forests, Dark Forests and Wooded Badlands. Up to four pieces can occupy one block space. It can be made by smelting leaves, used as fuel and composted. Java’s notes specify that Leaf Litter does not regenerate during gameplay after world generation.
Wildflowers
Wildflowers grow in Birch Forests, Old Growth Birch Forests and Meadows. Up to four can occupy one block space, and bone meal can produce more. Craft them into Yellow Dye.

Short and Tall Dry Grass
Short Dry Grass and Tall Dry Grass generate in Deserts and Badlands. Despite its name, Tall Dry Grass is only one block high, unlike ordinary Tall Grass, which occupies two blocks. Both dry-grass types can be composted and used as smelting fuel; sheep can eat them to regrow wool.

Cactus Flowers
Cactus Flowers can generate on cacti in Deserts and Badlands. Java’s release notes give a 10% growth chance on one- or two-block cacti and 25% on cacti at least three blocks tall, provided all four sides have space. A Cactus Flower can be composted or crafted into one Pink Dye.
Falling leaf particles
Leaf blocks that previously lacked them now have falling leaf particles. Java’s notes name Acacia, Azalea, Birch, Dark Oak, Flowering Azalea, Jungle, Mangrove, Oak and Spruce leaves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What new ambient sounds are in the update?
Sand, red sand, terracotta and dead bushes can now contribute ambient sounds, making arid landscapes feel less silent. The conditions differ by edition. Java distinguishes an idle sand sound that can occur in any biome from a wind sound limited to Deserts and Badlands; its notes also describe sounds associated with dead bushes. Check the relevant edition’s release notes for the full block and placement conditions rather than assuming every sound plays everywhere.
What practical uses do the additions have?
- Dyes: Wildflowers craft into Yellow Dye, and Cactus Flowers craft into one Pink Dye.
- Fuel: Leaf Litter and both dry-grass types can be used as smelting fuel.
- Composting: Leaf Litter, Bushes, dry grasses and Cactus Flowers can be composted.
- Wool: Sheep can eat Short or Tall Dry Grass to regrow their wool.
- Lodestones: The crafting recipe is easier. Java’s exact recipe is one Iron Ingot and Chiseled Stone Bricks.
These are the documented uses; other placement rules and details may vary between Java and Bedrock.
Are there other changes beyond Overworld features?
Minecraft’s overview also mentions new maps from cartographers and wandering trader deals. The broad overview does not establish the precise scope of every map or trade change, so check the release notes for your edition before relying on a particular offering. Java also adds Kyrgyz language support and makes the game tests system accessible through data packs using the new test command. Those are localization and technical additions rather than new Overworld content.
