The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered modernizes the original’s visuals, movement, combat presentation, third-person camera, leveling, interface and dialogue. Bethesda describes a visual overhaul and a set of gameplay and quality-of-life refinements—not a complete redesign of every system. The remaster also bundles the original’s major story expansions and listed DLC in its Standard Edition. Here is what Bethesda has documented, and what it has not established.
Oblivion Remastered vs. the 2006 original: at a glance
| Area | What Bethesda documents in the remaster | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Visuals and lighting | Visible assets were recreated; an updated lighting system simulates how light interacts with the environment. | A visual overhaul, not proof that every underlying game system was rebuilt. |
| Faces and voices | Updated character base meshes and lip-sync technology; newly recorded dialogue gives races that previously shared voices distinct voices. | Changes to character presentation and dialogue, as described by Bethesda. |
| Movement and combat | Sprinting was added. Locomotion and models were redone, and combat animations, effects and hit reactions were updated. | Named movement and combat-presentation changes; no measured claim about balance or responsiveness. |
| Third-person view | The view was overhauled and now includes a crosshair. | A documented camera and aiming-interface change. |
| Leveling and interface | Leveling was redesigned with inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim; UI and UX visuals were updated. | A redesigned leveling system and updated presentation, without a full rules breakdown. |
| Game content | The Standard Edition includes Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine and listed additional DLC. | Included content for the digital editions Bethesda describes; check the specific platform SKU. |
| Platforms and format | Bethesda says the remaster launched for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC in 2025; a Switch 2 version launched August 11, 2026. A physical Switch 2 Deluxe Edition is also described. | Platform and format information in Bethesda’s announcements as of October 4, 2026. |
Visual overhaul: recreated assets and updated lighting
Bethesda says the remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 tools to enhance visuals and performance. It describes more detailed landscapes and character models, atmospheric effects, and recreated visible assets—including characters, weapons, environmental objects and food. The lighting system was updated to simulate interactions between light and the environment. Character base meshes and lip-sync technology were also updated to make faces more expressive.
That supports calling the presentation a visual overhaul. It does not establish that the entire game, every asset, or every underlying system was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. Virtuos executive producer Alex Murphy described the project’s relationship to the original this way: “Oblivion is the heart and soul of the Remaster.” Bethesda’s extended look is a feature overview, not an exhaustive technical account.
Movement, combat and the third-person camera
Sprinting and locomotion
Sprinting is new, and Bethesda says character locomotion and models were redone. The announcement identifies the feature changes but does not provide a complete movement-system comparison or establish how movement feels in play.
#1 Best Overall
- Live another life in another world, create and play any character you can imagine
- An all-new combat and magic system brings first person role-playing to a new level of intensity
- Groundbreaking AI system gives characters full 24/7 schedules
- New lands to explore in the Shivering Isles expansion
- Challenging new foes, hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibeous Grummites and more
Combat presentation
Combat animations were recreated with more separation between upper- and lower-body movement. Bethesda also names updated combat sound and visual effects, plus hit reactions. These are documented presentation changes; they do not, by themselves, show that combat balance, timing or responsiveness changed in a particular way.
Third-person view
Bethesda says the third-person view was overhauled and now has a crosshair. It described the modernization as comparable in playability to Starfield. That is Bethesda’s characterization, not a controlled comparison of the two games.
Leveling, interface and dialogue changes
Leveling
The leveling system was redesigned, drawing inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim. Bethesda’s overview does not provide a full rules-by-rules account, so it is not enough to infer every mechanical difference from the original.
UI and UX
The interface’s visuals were updated for contemporary standards and hardware. Bethesda does not publish a complete inventory of interface changes in its overview.

Dialogue and voices
Bethesda says new dialogue was recorded, and races that previously shared voices now have distinct voices. The announcement does not specify a full count of new lines or enumerate every affected race.
Other quality-of-life changes
Bethesda says the remaster includes “dozens” of additional quality-of-life updates, but its feature overview does not list them all. Beyond the named changes above, a comprehensive item-by-item comparison is not established by that announcement.
Rank #4
- Includes Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions
Which expansions and DLC are included?
Bethesda’s launch announcement and support article describe the digital Standard Edition as including the base game, both story expansions and eight additional DLC packs. The Deluxe Edition adds themed quests and digital extras.
| Edition | Contents Bethesda lists |
|---|---|
| Standard Edition (digital) | Base game; Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine; Fighter’s Stronghold, Spell Tomes, Vile Lair, Mehrune’s Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, The Orrery and Horse Pack Armor. |
| Deluxe Edition (digital) | Standard Edition contents, plus quests for unique Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon armor, weapons and horse armor sets; a digital artbook and soundtrack app. |
| Digital Deluxe Upgrade | Bethesda Support says the upgrade requires the base game, which is sold separately. |
These are the contents Bethesda lists for the digital editions; confirm the platform’s own store listing before purchase. Bethesda’s June 30, 2026 announcement describes the Switch 2 physical Deluxe Edition separately: its cartridge contains the full base game, with the expansions, listed DLC and unique digital equipment sets. That platform-specific description should not be assumed to apply to every physical or digital SKU.

Platforms and physical edition status as of October 4, 2026
Bethesda’s April 22, 2025 launch announcement named Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. The later Switch 2 announcement says that version launched August 11, 2026, with unique motion controls and what Bethesda calls a “complete story experience.” Bethesda’s official game page, accessed October 4, 2026, also listed a Switch 2 Patch 1.1 dated September 17, 2026, and a news item titled “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Physical Edition Now Available.”
For a physical copy, the clearest product description in these announcements is the Switch 2 Deluxe Edition cartridge containing the full base game. Availability, regional packaging, retailer stock and exact SKU contents can vary; check the listing for the platform and edition you intend to buy.
What the published comparison does not establish
Bethesda’s extended look documents specific features, but it is not a complete change log or a controlled side-by-side performance study. It does not support a comprehensive account of every mechanic that changed, nor an objective verdict that one version plays better. No measured frame-rate results, hardware benchmarks or platform-specific performance conclusions are established by the announcements cited here. The original PC Game of the Year manual, which carries a 2007 copyright notice, is a useful period reference for that edition’s controls and features, but it does not cover every original platform or provide a complete remaster-delta list.
Accordingly, the concrete comparison is the set of changes Bethesda names: visual assets and lighting, facial presentation and voices, sprinting and locomotion, combat presentation, the third-person view, leveling, interface visuals, and bundled content. Claims beyond those specifics need evidence beyond the official feature overview.
