All Paint Cage Locations in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Every Paint Cage in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 opens when you destroy its three nearby locks. Some locks sit above or behind the cage, and others are hidden behind destructible clutter or Paint Spikes. Sweep the area from different angles before assuming one is missing; certain Paint Spikes require Paint Break.

The route below combines locations documented by guides published in 2025. Their totals and area lists conflict, so treat this as a location guide rather than a guaranteed current-game count. Rewards and item names can also vary with game version.

How to open a Paint Cage

1. Find the cage and inspect the nearby area from multiple angles, including above and behind it.
2. Shoot all three locks. They may be positioned around landmarks rather than clustered beside the cage.
3. If you cannot reach or see a lock, check for destructible objects and Paint Spikes that may conceal it. Paint Break is required for some Paint Spikes.
4. Return to the cage after destroying all three locks to collect its reward.

MapMaster says Paint Break is awarded after returning four Lost Gestrals to Sastro. Gameranx identifies locks in the Monolith and Flying Manor that require the ability. If a Paint Spike blocks your route, continue the Lost Gestral objective until you obtain Paint Break, then return.

Paint Cage locations by area

Flying Waters

• Near the entrance: Look beside the large anchor and Expedition 68 remains. The locks are around the anchor, on a seaweed-covered wall, and along the passage. Reward: Chroma Elixir Shard.
• Red-algae cave: Take the optional route from Coral Cave. Check above and behind the cage, then look for a lock on a floating mine. Reward: Revive Tint Shard.

Ancient Sanctuary

• Above a cliff beyond the Sanctuary Maze route: Search around the stump, trees, and boxes for the locks. Use the side-platform route to reach the cage once it opens. Reward: Chroma Elixir Shard.

Stone Wave Cliffs

• Near the Entrance Flag and airship wreckage: Climb the rope to the cage. One lock is behind it; view the other two from the upper platform. Reward: Delaram for Gustave.
• Old Farm: Look near the Expedition Flag. The locks are on the wall, among palettes, and on the cliff. Reward: Duenum for Maelle.

Stone Wave Cliffs Cave

• Elevated platform: Cross the hexagonal bridge and climb the light rope. Search around the crystals and wrecked airship for the three locks. Reward: Chroma Elixir Shard.

Forgotten Battlefield

• Trench beyond the main explorable ruins: Check around the trench and boxes; the locks are easy to overlook among the clutter. Reward: Chroma Elixir Shard.

Esoteric Ruins

• Beyond the climb and small jump near the Expedition Flag: Find one lock at the gap in the slope and the others around the maze entrance. Reward: Chroma.

Old Lumiere

• Area opened after defeating Renoir and returning: Look for locks on a cliff, among building remains, and on a nearby building. Reward: Redalim for Lune.

Sirene

• Past the first lift and Dancing Classes flag: Reach the cage by stairs, rope, grapple, and another set of stairs. The locks are near the cage, on a pillar behind it, and near the area entrance. Reward: Shield Affinity Picto.

Frozen Hearts

• Lower climb route, near the cave exit: Look above the cage, on icicles, and on a crane. Reward: Anti-Freeze Picto.
• Other climb route toward the station: Check a column, a rock, and a train car for the locks. Reward: Revive Tint Shard.

The Monolith

• Tainted Meadows: The guide lists a Revive Tint Shard.
• Tainted Sanctuary: The guide lists Random Defense Pictos. One lock is behind a blue rock and requires Paint Break.
• Tainted Hearts: The guide lists Empowering Parry Picto.

Endless Night Sanctuary

• Above the route from the Night Totem Expedition Flag: Search nearby trees and behind boxes. The guide spells the reward “Gradiouse Chroma Catalyst”; check the item name shown in your game.

Flying Manor

• Cathedral reached by crossing a broken frame: One lock is behind a Paint Spike, so this cage requires Paint Break. Reward: Level 28 Energising Stun Picto.
• Past the Dualliste route and a grapple: Look on a floating frame, a statue, and the ground. Reward: Level 28 Powerful Revive Picto.

Verso’s Draft

• Two cages: Game8 lists one with Esquim for Lune and another with a Chroma Elixir Shard. Its guide does not reconcile its stated total with its area list, so use these as reported locations and rewards, not confirmation of a revised game-wide count.

Why the total is uncertain

Gameranx’s June 5, 2025 guide reports 17 cages across 12 locations. Game8’s guide, updated December 13, 2025, says 16 cages across 11 areas but lists 12 area names, including Verso’s Draft. The two lists therefore do not establish a single dependable total for the current game. MapMaster also describes its guide as still being expanded. Check your in-game progress rather than treating either published count as definitive.
