For the clearest connected story, play Silent Hill: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. For the franchise’s historical release sequence, follow release order instead. Those are different lists: launch dates vary by region and platform, while the games do not have one authoritative, exact-year timeline covering the whole series.
Release order: the Silent Hill games and related releases
The list below follows the earliest dated release represented in the Silent Hill Memories release catalog. It is a year-level guide, not a universal day-by-day ranking: individual dates can differ by territory and platform. The entries also vary in format and continuity, so a release list should not be mistaken for one continuous story.

| Year | Release or group | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1999 | Silent Hill | The original game and the start of the Harry Mason and Alessa storyline. Konami’s European product page lists 01.08.1999 and PlayStation, PS Vita, and PSP support; that is a European date, not a global launch date. Konami European product page. |
| 2001 | Silent Hill: Play Novel; Silent Hill 2 | Play Novel is a separate, novel-style adaptation. Silent Hill 2 tells a largely self-contained story centered on James Sunderland. |
| 2003 | Silent Hill 3 | Continues the original game’s story through Heather. |
| 2004 | Silent Hill 4: The Room | Connected to the setting and lore, but its exact place in a single series timeline is not firmly established. |
| 2006–2010 | Mobile releases and related products, including Silent Hill: The Arcade, Silent Hill: Origins, Silent Hill: Homecoming, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, and mobile entries | A varied group of console, arcade, and mobile releases. Shattered Memories is an alternate-reality reimagining; the other titles should not all be treated as direct chapters in one continuous plot. |
| 2012 | Silent Hill: Downpour; Silent Hill: Book of Memories | Distinct entries with weaker links to the classic story sequence; Book of Memories is a spin-off. |
| 2014 | Silent Hills P.T. | A playable teaser, not a conventional full game. |
| 2023 | Silent Hill: Ascension | An interactive series, rather than a conventional single-player game. |
| 2024 | Silent Hill: The Short Message; Silent Hill 2 remake | The Short Message is a standalone entry. The remake is a new version of the 2001 game, not a separate continuation of James Sunderland’s story. |
| 2025 | SILENT HILL f | A standalone psychological horror story set in Japan. |
For an exact release day, check the relevant region and platform rather than assigning one date to a title worldwide. The catalog records region-specific dates; for example, the original Silent Hill has multiple 1999 dates. The table groups the catalog’s earliest dated entries by year and is intended to make the broad release history easy to follow, not to resolve every regional variation.
Chronological order: which games share a story?
For the best-supported connected narrative, the order is Silent Hill: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. Specialist timeline research finds relative intervals for this sequence, but not dependable calendar years for each game: Silent Hill follows Origins by seven years, and Silent Hill 3 is set 24 years after Origins. These are intervals, not exact dates. Silent Hill Memories timeline.

- Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
- KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
- The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
- Silent Hill: Origins — a prequel to the original. Playing it first gives the story’s in-fiction sequence, but means seeing the prequel before the game it leads into.
- Silent Hill — follows the events of Origins in the Harry Mason and Alessa storyline.
- Silent Hill 3 — continues that storyline through Heather.
This three-game path is the clearest answer to “What’s the chronological order?” for the connected Harry and Heather plot. It does not provide a complete chronology for every title.
Where the other games fit
There is no single authoritative chart that assigns every Silent Hill game an exact fictional year and places it in one consistent sequence. The specialist timeline discusses relative ordering and conflicting information, and gives the original four Team Silent games priority when sources disagree. A recent secondary guide is useful for broad framing, but its more precise fictional-year claims should not be treated as established fact. GameTimeline.
- Silent Hill 2: James Sunderland’s story is largely self-contained. It does not need to be inserted between the Harry and Heather games to make sense.
- Silent Hill 4: The Room: it has connections to the series’ setting and lore, but sources disagree on its exact placement. Treat it as a related story rather than a firmly dated link in the three-game sequence.
- Homecoming and Downpour: the cited chronology finds their links to the classic sequence weak; it does not establish a precise position for either.
- Shattered Memories: an alternate-reality reimagining, not another event in the original game’s straightforward continuity.
- The Short Message, Ascension, arcade and mobile titles, and Book of Memories: distinct formats or spin-offs that should not be forced into the core story order.
- SILENT HILL f: a standalone story set in Japan. Konami identifies it as the series’ first psychological horror title set there. Its official announcement establishes the location, but does not establish a fictional decade; avoid presenting a precise year as confirmed. Konami SILENT HILL f page.
Which order should you play?
| If you want… | Use this order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The series’ historical progression | Release order | It shows how the games and related releases appeared to players, without making assumptions about disputed story dates. |
| The connected Harry and Heather plot | Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 | This is the clearest supported in-fiction sequence; it puts a prequel before its original release. |
| A separate character-focused story | Start with Silent Hill 2 | Its James Sunderland story is largely self-contained and does not depend on the Harry and Heather sequence. |
| A modern standalone entry | SILENT HILL f | It is a Japan-set standalone story rather than a required chapter in the original games’ continuity. |
