What makes staff bases different?
Each base has a granted skill
Staves are described as two-handed spell weapons that require Intelligence. They cannot be used to attack; each base instead grants an implicit spell. Bonuses to skill level can apply to that granted skill when the modifier affects it.
#1 Best Overall
Examples of granted skills reported in the wiki list include:
| Staff base | Granted skill |
|---|---|
| Ashen Staff | Firebolt |
| Gelid Staff | Freezing Shards |
| Voltaic Staff | Lightning Bolt |
| Pyrophyte Staff | Solar Orb |
| Chiming Staff | Sigil of Power |
| Reaping Staff | Reap |
| Roaring Staff | Unleash |
| Paralysing Staff | Enervating Nova |
| Sanctified Staff | Consecrate |
The retrieved database listing does not show granted-skill names for Spriggan, Rending, Icicle, Dark, Perching, Ravenous, Reflecting, or Permafrost Staff, so their skills are not included here. Skill details and thresholds may change between patches.

The listed staff modifiers include spell damage; fire, cold, lightning, chaos, and physical spell damage; extra elemental damage; spell skill levels; cast speed; spell critical modifiers; and resource or utility affixes. Which combination is useful depends on your build, so a base name alone does not show whether a particular staff is an upgrade.

Special availability: Reflecting Staff
The wiki result describes Reflecting Staff as a unique-only base, meaning it cannot be obtained as a non-unique item. Verify current acquisition details in-game or against current game data.

How to choose a staff base
- Start with the granted skill. Choose a base whose implicit spell fits the skill you intend to use, and confirm the skill in the current game version.
- Check the requirement. Make sure your character meets the base’s level and Intelligence requirements.
- Compare modifiers against your build. Prioritize relevant damage types, skill levels, cast speed, or spell critical modifiers rather than judging by the base name alone.
- Confirm availability. Some bases may have special acquisition rules; Reflecting Staff is reported as unique-only.
