Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutealpsres.dll is a legacy ALPS printer-driver resource DLL, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or general-purpose Windows library. If Windows says it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the printer driver package that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is described as “ALPS Printer Driver for Windows NT(TM) Operating System.” Public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit driver component associated with Microsoft Windows, but that does not mean every modern Windows installation should contain it. It may only be needed by an old ALPS printer driver, printer utility, installer, or startup program.
alpsres.dll: quick identification
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Filename | alpsres.dll |
| Reported description | ALPS Printer Driver for Windows NT(TM) Operating System |
| Category | Printer-driver resource DLL |
| Reported publisher/product | Microsoft Corporation / Microsoft Windows Operating System |
| Architecture | Reported as 32-bit in public file inventories |
| Typical owner | Legacy ALPS printer-driver package |
| Guaranteed location | None; the path depends on the installed driver package |
Printer resource DLLs provide driver resources such as interface text, icons, fonts, and other data. Microsoft documents that these files are installed and referenced by printer INF or minidriver packages, so a program that displays the error is not necessarily the program that owns alpsres.dll.
The file can exist in a printer-driver location such as:

%windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository
%windir%System32spooldrivers
%windir%SysWOW64spooldrivers
Do not assume that it belongs directly in C:WindowsSystem32. Windows uses counterintuitive folder names for 32-bit and 64-bit components, and copying a 32-bit file into a guessed location can leave the driver package inconsistent.
What the error actually means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because alpsres.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because alpsres.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting alpsres.dll.”
- “Error loading alpsres.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “alpsres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The file ALPSRES.DLL is missing or corrupt.”
These messages do not prove that the visible application requires the DLL. A printer installer, print spooler-related component, old printer utility, or startup entry may be requesting it while another application happens to be open.
“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by alpsres.dll is missing. The named DLL is not always the only damaged or absent file.
Likely causes include:
- An incomplete or damaged legacy printer-driver package.
- A printer driver removed during cleanup or uninstall.
- An interrupted Windows upgrade.
- Antivirus quarantine or removal.
- A stale startup entry from old printer software.
- A recent driver update that failed.
- An obsolete installer or application that is no longer compatible with Windows.
- Windows component or storage corruption.
Start by identifying the printer or software that owns the request.
1. Capture the complete error path
If the dialog shows a path, write it down before closing the message. A path containing DriverStoreFileRepository or spooldrivers strongly points to a printer-driver package. A path inside an old application folder points to that application or its installer.
Also check the Windows event logs:
- Press
Winand type Event Viewer. - Open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Select Windows Logs, then System, and inspect events at the time of the failure.
- Look for entries mentioning the application, printer, print spooler, driver installation, or a failing module.
If the error appears during startup, use Task Manager:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for old printer utilities, setup programs, or entries with a missing path.
- Right-click a clearly obsolete printer utility and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows and check whether the message returns.
Do not disable a random entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. If no ALPS printer, printer utility, or legacy software exists on the machine, the alert may be stale or suspicious. In that situation, inspect startup entries and scheduled tasks and run a malware scan instead of adding the DLL manually.
For difficult cases, Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor can show which executable attempts to open the file. Filter for the path or filename alpsres.dll, reproduce the failure, and inspect the Process Name and Path columns. That identifies the requester more reliably than guessing from the dialog title.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Reinstall the printer through Windows
This is the most likely fix when the file is missing from a printer-driver directory.
Before removing anything, note the printer’s exact model and confirm that you can reinstall it. If it is a network or shared printer, record its address or connection details.
Remove and rediscover the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Click Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- Install the driver Windows provides.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings.
If Windows Update has a suitable driver, this restores the complete package rather than placing one unregistered file into a system folder. If the printer is not found, select the option to add it manually and use the correct connection type.
Remove a damaged driver package
If reinstalling the visible printer does not help, the old package may remain in the driver store.
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the affected printer and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Delete the driver software for this device, select it.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the printer again through Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device.
Some systems list the device under Imaging devices, Other devices, or a manufacturer-specific category. Do not remove unrelated hardware.
For a printer that no longer appears, open Print Management if it is available on your Windows edition:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
printmanagement.msc. - Open Print Servers → your computer → Drivers.
- Remove only the obsolete driver package associated with the affected printer.
- Restart and reinstall the correct package.
If Print Management is unavailable, do not enable random Windows Features just to obtain it. The supported path remains Windows Settings, Device Manager, or the printer manufacturer’s current driver package.
When Windows Update has no compatible driver, download the complete package from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Search by the exact printer model and your Windows version. Avoid packages intended for a similar model, a different language, or a different Windows release.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through several hardware packages and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan shows detected driver problems, while driver installation through the full version remains optional. For this specific file, the exact printer manufacturer package is still the definitive repair.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The error no longer appears at startup or application launch.
- The printer appears normally in Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- The old path no longer produces a missing-file event.
- The printer utility opens without requesting
alpsres.dll.
If the same error returns immediately, continue with the next steps instead of copying a DLL into System32.
3. Check Windows Security Protection History
Microsoft Defender or another security product may have quarantined a printer component. A quarantined file should not be restored blindly because a damaged or fake driver can also trigger a detection.
To review Defender events:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
alpsres.dll, the printer installer, or its containing package. - Expand the event and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
Only restore or allow the file if all of the following are true:
- It came from a trusted printer-driver package.
- The path belongs to the expected driver installation.
- The printer model and package match your hardware.
- The package is digitally signed or obtained from the manufacturer.
If you are unsure, leave the item quarantined and reinstall the driver from the manufacturer instead. Protection History retains events for a limited period, so an old quarantine event may no longer be visible.
Run a full scan if the file repeatedly disappears:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline if you suspect an active infection that interferes with normal Windows scanning.
4. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this path when multiple Windows files are failing, an upgrade was interrupted, or the printer package appears correct but Windows still reports corruption.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then run DISM followed by SFC. The order matters because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source.

- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. If it cannot find repair files, Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid matching Windows repair source. Do not invent a source path or point DISM at an unrelated installation.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. If it repairs files, restart and test the printer again. If the error persists, repair the printer package rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual diagnostic process easier by scanning for system problems, but its free scan only identifies issues and the repair is performed by the full version; DISM and SFC remain the built-in path.

5. Use System Restore after a recent change
If alpsres.dll worked until a driver update, cleanup utility, uninstall, or Windows change, System Restore may reverse the damaged driver registration and related system changes.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
System Restore can revert drivers, registry settings, system files, and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not replace a missing personal document, and it may not be available if no restore point exists.
After restoration, reinstall the correct printer driver if Windows still detects an incomplete package.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Handle architecture and location correctly
Public records describe alpsres.dll as a legacy 32-bit component, but that does not tell you to copy it into SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components while SysWOW64 generally contains 32-bit components. The names are historical and counterintuitive.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit printer driver. The driver’s INF file, package references, spooler architecture, and dependencies determine where its files belong. A file copied into the wrong directory may appear to fix one error while breaking installation, printing, or servicing.
For the same reason, do not substitute:
- A similarly named DLL.
- A file from another Windows release.
- A localized resource file.
- A file from another printer model.
- A 32-bit file copied from an unrelated computer.
- A file with a different version or dependency set.
The correct repair is the complete matching driver package.

What not to do
Do not download alpsres.dll from a random DLL site
An arbitrary DLL download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a modified file. It may also fail because the missing item is a dependency or because the printer’s INF package is incomplete.
Manual copying bypasses Windows driver servicing and can create version mismatches. Use Windows Update, the printer manufacturer’s official support package, DISM, SFC, or System Restore instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not run regsvr32 alpsres.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point. A printer resource DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
Do not run:
regsvr32 alpsres.dll
A message saying that DllRegisterServer was not found would be expected for a resource DLL. Registration does not rebuild the printer’s INF package, restore dependencies, or repair the print spooler.
Do not use Visual C++ or DirectX installers as a guess
alpsres.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, game middleware component, or general Windows API library. Installing unrelated runtimes is unlikely to repair the printer driver that owns it.
Do not keep an obsolete startup entry active
If you no longer use the ALPS printer or its legacy utility, uninstall the obsolete parent program or disable its startup entry after verifying what launched it. A harmless stale warning does not justify downloading the missing file.

If the error remains after reinstalling the driver
Work through these checks:
- Capture the exact path shown in the error.
- Identify the requesting executable with Event Viewer or Process Monitor.
- Check whether multiple old printer packages remain in Print Management or Device Manager.
- Review Defender Protection History and run a full scan.
- Check whether the printer’s installer is too old for current Windows driver-signing requirements.
- Install a newer manufacturer driver or a compatible inbox/class driver if available.
- Check the disk and Windows event logs if files repeatedly disappear.
- Remove the obsolete printer software if the hardware is no longer used.
If no ALPS printer or legacy printer software exists on the computer, treat the alert as a stale startup reference or a potential security issue. The requesting process matters more than the filename alone.
FAQ
Is alpsres.dll malware?
The filename describes a legitimate legacy printer-driver resource, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Verify its path, digital signature, owning driver package, and Defender status. A copy appearing in an unrelated application or temporary folder deserves investigation.
Is alpsres.dll a Windows system file?
It is reported as part of Microsoft Windows and associated with a printer-driver package, but it is not required on every modern Windows installation. It may be absent when no compatible legacy ALPS printer driver is installed.
Can I restore the file from another PC?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows release, driver package, architecture, language, or dependency set. Reinstall the complete matching printer driver instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I search System32 or SysWOW64 first?
You can inspect the driver paths, including the Driver Store and spool-driver directories, but do not decide where the file belongs from the folder name alone. The printer package determines the correct location and references.
Why does a game or unrelated application mention alpsres.dll?
The application may be launching an old installer, startup component, printer utility, or dependency chain that requests the file. The visible program is not necessarily the owner. Use the full error path and Process Monitor to identify the requester.
Will DISM and SFC always fix it?
No. They repair Windows component corruption, not every damaged third-party or legacy printer package. If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the error remains, remove and reinstall the exact printer driver and investigate the requesting process.
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
No. Optional Windows Features do not normally restore a legacy printer resource DLL. Repair the printer package through Windows Update or the manufacturer, and use Windows Features only when a specific documented Windows component is required by the identified application.
