nmoldwb.dll Errors: Track Down the Old NetMeeting Installation

“This application failed to start because nmoldwb.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.” nmoldwb.dll is a genuine Microsoft NetMeeting file, but it is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component.

The file is the old NetMeeting Whiteboard 1.0–2.x component. It was normally installed with Microsoft NetMeeting, historically under:

C:Program FilesNetMeetingnmoldwb.dll

A missing file usually means that NetMeeting, an old program dependent on it, or the original Windows installation has been damaged or removed. Downloading a loose DLL and placing it in System32 is not the right starting point.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose the shortest safe path:

  • The error appears when starting NetMeeting or `wb32.exe: Repair or reinstall the complete NetMeeting installation.
  • The error began after cleanup software, System Restore, or an update: Restore the complete application from a known-good backup or restore point.
  • Your antivirus quarantined the file: Check quarantine and verify the original NetMeeting path before restoring anything.
  • Windows XP or Server 2003 reports broader system-file errors: Run the operating system’s supported SFC repair procedure.
  • You are using Windows 10 or Windows 11: Do not expect NetMeeting or nmoldwb.dll to be present. Use an isolated legacy environment or replace the old application.
  • A modern game or program names the file: Identify the executable producing the message before changing Windows files. No mainstream modern game requiring this DLL has been verified.
  • You were told to run regsvr32: Do not do that by default. This file is not established as a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found”: The DLL itself may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.

What nmoldwb.dll actually is

nmoldwb.dll belongs to Microsoft NetMeeting’s older whiteboard implementation. Microsoft described NetMeeting as a conferencing application with whiteboard, chat, file transfer, and audio/video features. Its whiteboard functionality used a dedicated ITU T.126-based protocol, as documented in Microsoft’s NetMeeting protocol specification.

NetMeeting was included with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Windows XP was the last client Windows release to include it. It was not included with Windows Vista or Windows 7, although Microsoft historically provided a transitional NetMeeting 3.02 package for certain 32-bit Vista editions. That old package is obsolete and is not a supported installation method for current Windows.

The file is identified as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. No verified 64-bit build has been established. It should not be copied into SysWOW64 simply because the operating system is 64-bit.

Also do not confuse it with nmwb.dll. Both files are associated with NetMeeting whiteboard functionality, but nmoldwb.dll is specifically the older 1.0–2.x component.

Fix 1: Identify the program calling the DLL

Before replacing anything, find out which executable displays the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the executable name and its installation directory.
  6. Select Open File Location if that button is available.

If the target is NetMeeting or wb32.exe, the parent installation is the likely source. If the target is an unrelated application, inspect that program’s own folder and documentation before assuming Windows should contain nmoldwb.dll.

Check the application folder

Look for:

nmoldwb.dll
nmwb.dll
wb32.exe
nmchat.dll
nmft.dll

These names commonly appeared together in historical NetMeeting installations. Their presence can help identify a damaged or incomplete NetMeeting folder.

Do not replace nmoldwb.dll with nmwb.dll. They are different components.

Check the expected path

Open File Explorer and enter this path in the address bar:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

C:Program FilesNetMeeting

On a 64-bit version of Windows, also check whether the old application was installed under a different program directory. Do not assume that a 32-bit DLL belongs in a Windows system folder. Historical inventories place this file primarily in the NetMeeting directory, and Windows XP could also retain a copy in its protected DLL cache.

If the DLL exists in the application folder but the error remains, the message may refer to a missing dependency rather than the named file itself.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the complete NetMeeting installation

This is the most direct fix when NetMeeting is the caller.

A complete reinstall is safer than copying one DLL because NetMeeting depends on companion files, registry settings, and a matching release. A manually copied file can still fail because of missing dependencies, incompatible exports, or an unsupported host operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Server 2003

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Look for NetMeeting or a related Windows component.
  5. If it is listed, select it and choose Change, Repair, or Remove, depending on the available options.
  6. Restart the computer if Windows requests it.
  7. Reinstall NetMeeting from the original legitimate Windows installation media or an appropriate Microsoft package for that operating system.
  8. Restart again.
  9. Launch NetMeeting or the affected legacy program.

If Windows asks for installation media, use the disc or recovery source that matches the installed operating system. Do not combine files from different Windows releases.

On 32-bit Windows Vista

Microsoft historically supplied the Netmeeting-kb927853-x86-enu.msi package for 32-bit Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. That package is obsolete, and its current availability and support status should not be assumed. It is not a general solution for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If you still maintain a legitimate 32-bit Vista system that originally used NetMeeting, use the system’s original recovery source or a verified Microsoft-supplied package appropriate to that exact edition. Do not install a package intended for a different architecture.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11

There is no current Microsoft redistributable specifically intended to install nmoldwb.dll. NetMeeting is not a supported built-in Windows 10 or Windows 11 feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the old application is essential, the practical route is to restore the complete application inside a properly isolated Windows XP or other historically supported 32-bit environment. Keep that environment separated from modern networks where appropriate, and migrate to a supported collaboration program when possible.

Copying an XP DLL into Windows 10 or Windows 11 does not recreate NetMeeting and does not make the legacy application supported.

Fix 3: Restore the complete application from backup or System Restore

If nmoldwb.dll disappeared after cleanup, a failed update, or a system rollback, restore NetMeeting as a complete installation.

Use System Restore

  1. Press Windows key, type Create a restore point, and open it.
  2. Select System Restore.
  3. Choose Next.
  4. Select a restore point created before the error began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Review the changes.
  7. Select Next, then Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.
  9. Test the original application.

System Restore may not be available on every system, and it may not restore a deleted program directory. If it does not help, use a known-good full-system backup or reinstall the application from legitimate installation media.

Avoid restoring only one DLL unless you know the source, architecture, hash, and companion files match the original installation.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring the file

Security software can quarantine a file after detecting suspicious behavior or a damaged installation.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving nmoldwb.dll.
  5. Expand the event and check the detected path.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate NetMeeting installation.
  7. If malware is suspected, run a full scan before restoring anything.
  8. Restore the file only when the security product identifies it as safe or a false positive.
  9. Start the original application again.

Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. A DLL named nmoldwb.dll found in an unexpected temporary folder may not belong to NetMeeting.

If the file was quarantined from the historical NetMeeting directory and the system is clean, reinstalling the complete application is still preferable to restoring a single file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Run SFC and DISM when Windows corruption is plausible

SFC and DISM repair Windows itself. They are useful when Windows system files are damaged, but they normally will not recreate an obsolete DLL that belonged to a removed NetMeeting program directory.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run SFC second

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and test the application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the scan only as Microsoft’s guidance permits and review the result. Do not keep repeating SFC as a substitute for reinstalling NetMeeting.

When a Windows component is damaged and you want less manual work hunting through repair results and deciding what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling NetMeeting remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall relevant drivers only when diagnostics identify one

A display, audio, camera, or network driver does not normally provide nmoldwb.dll. Do not install drivers simply because a generic DLL page recommends it.

Driver work is relevant only if the legacy application’s own diagnostics identify a separate hardware or compatibility problem.

Use Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Open Advanced options.
  5. Select Optional updates.
  6. Expand Driver updates if present.
  7. Install only drivers that match your hardware.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Test the application again.

Use Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the hardware category named by the application’s diagnostic.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

To reinstall a device driver:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the affected device.
  3. Select Uninstall device.
  4. Confirm the removal.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Allow Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s supported installer to reinstall the driver.
  7. Test the application.

If manually identifying which of many devices has a stale driver is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the detected driver issues; the free scan identifies problems, while driver installation through the full version. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace the NetMeeting installation that owns nmoldwb.dll.

Fix 7: Do not use Windows Features as a random DLL repair

Windows Features does not provide a current NetMeeting feature on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

You can verify the available optional components:

  1. Press Windows key.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Open Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review the list.
  5. Do not enable unrelated features in the hope that one will create nmoldwb.dll.
  6. Select Cancel when finished.

On older Windows versions, NetMeeting could be associated with included Windows components, but its files still need to come from matching installation media or a legitimate package. Enabling a modern Windows feature cannot reconstruct the old whiteboard component.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the command for that purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

There is no evidence that nmoldwb.dll is an ActiveX control or self-registering COM server. Running this command:

regsvr32 nmoldwb.dll

will not restore a missing file. It may instead produce:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DllRegisterServer entry point was not found

That message does not mean the DLL needs a different registration command. It means the file is not designed for that registration mechanism.

Why random DLL downloads are risky

Avoid isolated DLL download sites sites and unofficial file mirrors. A downloaded file may have:

  • the wrong NetMeeting release;
  • the wrong architecture;
  • altered or malicious contents;
  • missing companion files;
  • incompatible exports or dependencies;
  • no trustworthy provenance.

It may also hide the real problem, such as a deleted application directory, antivirus quarantine, or an unsupported operating system.

The safe sources are the original Windows installation media, a known-good system backup, a legitimate Microsoft package appropriate to the old operating system, or a complete reinstall of the original application. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone nmoldwb.dll download intended for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error continues

Use the executable name, not just the DLL name, to continue troubleshooting.

  1. Recheck the shortcut target and application directory.
  2. Confirm whether nmoldwb.dll exists beside the calling executable or inside the historical NetMeeting directory.
  3. Check antivirus history again.
  4. Review Event Viewer by pressing Windows key, typing Event Viewer, and opening Windows Logs followed by Application.
  5. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  6. Use the application’s loader or dependency diagnostics if supplied by its developer.
  7. Run an offline malware scan if the file appeared unexpectedly.
  8. Test the complete application in its original supported Windows environment.

A “specified module could not be found” message can identify a missing dependency rather than the named DLL. Replacing files blindly can therefore make diagnosis harder.

A clean Windows reinstall is a last resort. One obsolete application DLL does not, by itself, justify wiping a working system.

Frequently asked questions

Is nmoldwb.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?

Yes. It is the old NetMeeting Whiteboard 1.0–2.x component developed by Microsoft. Its presence is legitimate when it belongs to a genuine NetMeeting installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC have it?

No. NetMeeting is not a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. A normal modern installation should not be expected to contain nmoldwb.dll.

Is nmoldwb.dll the same as nmwb.dll?

No. nmoldwb.dll is the older whiteboard component, while nmwb.dll is a newer NetMeeting whiteboard component. Substituting one for the other is unsafe.

Is there a 64-bit version?

Historical evidence identifies nmoldwb.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. No verified 64-bit build has been established.

Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?

Not as a generic fix. The historical location is primarily the NetMeeting program directory. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not require a 64-bit copy, but the old application may still be incompatible with the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

Not normally. Those packages are unrelated unless a separate diagnostic explicitly identifies one as missing. nmoldwb.dll belongs to NetMeeting.

Does the error prove that I have malware?

No. The filename alone does not prove malware. Verify its path, inspect antivirus history, and scan the system if the file appeared outside a legitimate application directory.

What is the most reliable fix?

Restore or reinstall the complete NetMeeting installation on its original supported Windows environment. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, use an isolated legacy environment or replace the unsupported application.
