alttab.dll Not Found: Repair Windows Shell Errors Safely

By VGSources Team 12 min read

alttab.dll is a Microsoft Windows shell component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. If Windows reports that alttab.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows system files first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

The safest repair path is:

  1. Install pending Windows updates.
  2. Run DISM.
  3. Run System File Checker.
  4. Restart Windows and test again.
  5. Repair the affected application if only one program is affected.

What is alttab.dll?

alttab.dll is internally described as Windows Shell Alt Tab. It belongs to the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is associated with the Windows shell and task-switching functions used by Explorer and Alt+Tab.

Public Windows file inventories identify the component in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. A file with this name is therefore a genuine Microsoft system component, not an automatically suspicious filename.

The file is typically associated with:

%WINDIR%System32AltTab.dll

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may be located at:

%WINDIR%SysWOW64AltTab.dll

These directory names are confusing. System32 normally contains native 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit components used by 32-bit applications. Microsoft documents this behavior in its File System Redirector guidance.

Do not copy a file from one directory to the other. The correct architecture depends on the Windows build and the process that is loading it.

What the error means

You may see messages such as:

  • alttab.dll is missing
  • alttab.dll was not found
  • The application failed to start because alttab.dll was not found
  • Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32alttab.dll
  • Failed to load alttab.dll
  • The specified module could not be found
  • The file alttab.dll is missing or corrupt
  • The procedure entry point could not be located
  • This application has failed to start because alttab.dll was not found

The wording provides a clue, but it does not always identify the exact cause.

For example, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that alttab.dll itself is missing. It can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL could not be loaded.

A bad-image or “not designed to run on Windows” message often points to corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a file from a different Windows build.

Before repairing: determine the scope

First establish whether the problem affects Windows itself or only one application.

If Explorer or Alt+Tab is affected

Symptoms may include:

  • Explorer repeatedly restarting
  • Alt+Tab failing
  • The desktop shell behaving unusually
  • Several Windows features reporting system-file errors
  • The error appearing immediately after sign-in

Treat this as a Windows component problem. Continue with the system repair steps below.

If only one program or game is affected

If Windows works normally and one older application reports alttab.dll, the program may be loading a private copy, using an incompatible dependency, or containing damaged files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that the application owns the DLL. Repair Windows first if the error names a Windows path. If the program has its own repair or file-verification function, use that after checking system integrity.

Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of updates and whether a restart is required.

A failed or incomplete update can leave protected Windows files inconsistent. Updating Windows may restore servicing components before you run DISM and SFC.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart when Windows requests it.
  7. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
  8. Test the application or Alt+Tab again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Click Check for updates.
  6. Install available updates.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Check for updates once more after restarting.

If Windows Update fails, record the error instead of repeatedly retrying. Continue with DISM and SFC.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker

Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of alttab.dll. Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows component store with DISM before running SFC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to complete. It may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes.
  2. When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application or shell function.

DISM normally uses Windows Update as a repair source. Microsoft provides the full System File Checker and DISM repair procedure.

How to interpret the result

A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them.

If SFC says it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, restart and test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC says it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them, do not download alttab.dll. Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If it still cannot repair the files, continue to the escalation steps later in this guide.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, the repair source may not be available through Windows Update. Microsoft documents an alternate syntax:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Only use that command after preparing a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build. Do not substitute an arbitrary folder.

When you are repeating DISM and SFC by hand without knowing which component is changing, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what needs attention. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions are handled by the full version, and it is not required for a successful DISM or SFC repair.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.

Security software may quarantine a system file after a detection or a mistaken classification. Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the detection is a false positive and that the system is not compromised.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Expand any entry that refers to alttab.dll.
  8. Check the detection name, path, date, and action taken.

If the file was quarantined and you are confident the detection is a false positive, follow Windows Security’s restore or allow instructions. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file is unsafe. The official Protection History guidance explains how quarantined items are handled.

In most cases, repairing Windows with DISM and SFC is preferable to restoring an unknown copy. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file disappeared unexpectedly. If malware is suspected, use an offline scan and avoid signing into sensitive accounts from the affected machine until it has been checked.

If the file disappears again after repair, investigate antivirus actions, malware, permissions, cleanup utilities, and disk problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair the affected application

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.

Use this step when only one application reports the error and Windows itself works normally.

For a Microsoft Store application

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its More button.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.
  9. If Repair does not help, select Reset if available.

Resetting can remove application data, so use it only when appropriate.

For a traditional desktop program

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
  6. Complete the vendor’s repair process.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.
  8. Test the program again.

For a game, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command. Do not place a downloaded alttab.dll in the game folder. If the application’s own installation is damaged, its official repair or reinstall is the definitive fix.

If reinstalling one application fixes the error while Explorer and other Windows functions remain normal, the problem was probably application-specific. If the error returns across multiple programs, return to Windows component repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check the file path and architecture

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may be redirected to SysWOW64, while native Windows components generally use System32. A file with the right name but the wrong architecture can produce a bad-image or compatibility error.

To check whether the expected paths exist:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select the address bar.
  3. Enter:
%WINDIR%System32
  1. Search for AltTab.dll.
  2. If you are using 64-bit Windows, also check:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64

Do not judge the file only by its size or filename. Windows builds legitimately contain different file versions, and a version from another release may be incompatible.

Known public inventories include Windows 8.1 builds with both 32-bit and 64-bit variants, but those inventories are not Microsoft’s complete distribution manifest. Do not select a DLL based on a version number from a download page.

If the file exists but Windows still cannot load it, the issue may be corruption, a missing dependency, an architecture mismatch, or a damaged component store. Run DISM and SFC rather than replacing it manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this error

Time needed: Not applicable.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that are designed to expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.

There is no verified evidence that AltTab.dll is intended to be manually registered. Running this command is therefore not recommended:

regsvr32 AltTab.dll

It may produce a secondary error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found” or “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found.” That does not repair a missing Windows shell component.

Microsoft explains the proper scope and common errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Check disk and file-system problems

Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours.

Repeated corruption, disappearing files, crashes, or failed SFC repairs can indicate file-system or storage problems.

First back up important documents. Then:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
chkdsk /f C:
  1. If Windows says the volume is in use, type Y to schedule the check.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Allow the disk check to finish.

The exact behavior depends on the drive letter and the condition of the file system. Microsoft includes chkdsk /f C: among its Windows update and repair troubleshooting guidance.

If files continue to vanish, investigate drive health, failing storage, permissions, and malware rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.

Fix 8: Update a driver only when the symptom is really graphics or shell instability

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes.

A driver is not a primary alttab.dll repair. Consider driver work only when the real symptom is display corruption, Explorer instability, black screens, or graphics failures rather than a direct file-integrity error.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Do not remove a working display driver solely because an error names alttab.dll.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a known system change

Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or other identifiable change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  8. Select Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents. Microsoft describes the available recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 10: Use Windows repair reinstall when normal repairs fail

Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, the problem returns immediately, or multiple protected files are damaged, use an official Windows repair path.

On supported Windows 11 systems, Microsoft provides:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the feature is available. It is not generally available on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

If that option is absent or does not solve the problem, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair where supported. Back up important data first and follow Microsoft’s installation-media repair guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why downloading alttab.dll is unsafe

Avoid DLL download sites websites and random file mirrors. A manually supplied alttab.dll may be:

  • The wrong Windows version
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Modified or malicious
  • Missing required dependencies
  • Unsigned or improperly packaged
  • Incompatible with the installed servicing level

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can hide the real problem and create DLL search-order risks. It can also turn a straightforward Windows repair into an architecture mismatch.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft Defender, System Restore, official installation media, or the affected program’s official repair process instead.

Likely causes

Symptom or timing More likely cause Appropriate response
Explorer or Alt+Tab fails Corrupted Windows files Run DISM, then SFC
Error began after an update Incomplete servicing Complete updates, then repair Windows
File vanished suddenly Quarantine or malware Check Protection History and scan
Only one old application fails Application damage or dependency issue Repair or reinstall that application
SFC cannot repair files Component-store, disk, or servicing damage Run DISM again and investigate the disk
Error returns after repair Malware, permissions, storage, or active quarantine Scan, review security history, and check the drive
“Not designed to run on Windows” Wrong architecture or incompatible version Do not copy another DLL; repair the source
“Specified module could not be found” Missing DLL or missing dependency Repair Windows and the affected application

FAQ

Is alttab.dll a Windows file?

Yes. It is identified as Windows Shell Alt Tab, developed by Microsoft Corporation for the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Visual C++?

Usually no. alttab.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime. Reinstall Visual C++ only when a separate error specifically identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime component.

Should I install DirectX or .NET?

Usually no. This DLL is not a DirectX redistributable or .NET assembly. Those repairs do not replace a damaged Windows shell component.

Should I run regsvr32 alttab.dll?

No. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed for self-registration. It is not a general repair tool, and there is no verified basis for manually registering AltTab.dll.

Can I copy the file from another computer?

Normally no. The other computer may use a different Windows build, architecture, servicing level, or file version. Use DISM and SFC to obtain the correct protected component.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a 32-bit program look in SysWOW64?

64-bit Windows uses file-system redirection so 32-bit applications can access their corresponding system components. Do not copy a 64-bit file into SysWOW64 or a 32-bit file into System32.

What if the error appears only in one game?

Use the game launcher’s file verification or repair function, then reinstall the game if necessary. If the error names a Windows path or also affects Explorer, repair Windows with DISM and SFC first.

What if SFC says it cannot repair everything?

Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If the result is unchanged, check disk health, review the CBS repair result, use System Restore if appropriate, and consider an in-place Windows repair.

Does this file exist in every version of Windows?

Do not assume that. Public inventories identify it in several older Windows releases, including Vista through 8.1. Exact components and versions vary by Windows release and servicing level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error persists after every repair?

Check whether antivirus is removing the file again, whether the drive has errors, and whether only one user profile or application is affected. If Windows remains unstable, use System Restore or an official in-place repair rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
