What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The right EC2 alternative depends on what you are streaming. For a live camera or software-generated feed, use a cloud VM or VPS if you want control and can maintain the encoder. For prerecorded videos, a managed cloud looping service can avoid running your own encoder. A standalone hardware encoder is another option for compatible physical sources and certain scheduled-video workflows.
For prerecorded YouTube loops, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it keeps uploaded videos running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Compare the alternatives below by workload and total operating cost—not by starting price alone.
Choose an alternative by stream source
| Option | Best fit | What you operate |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Prerecorded videos that should loop on YouTube | Upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and start the cloud stream. |
| Self-managed cloud VM or VPS | Live camera input or a software-generated program when you need control | You install and configure the encoder, and handle monitoring, updates, and recovery. |
| Managed cloud looping service | Prerecorded files, playlists, and schedules | The service manages file playback and cloud streaming; check its supported features and limits. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | A compatible camera or video source, or a supported scheduled-file workflow | You provide and configure the hardware, source, and any optional features. |
These are different operating models, not interchangeable versions of the same service. A VM gives you a general-purpose machine but leaves the streaming setup to you. A managed loop service is aimed at uploaded media. Hardware depends on physical input compatibility and the device’s feature set.
Stream prerecorded videos without managing a VM
StreamNeo for YouTube loops
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.

Other managed cloud loops
Gyre describes a workflow in which you upload files, create a playlist, connect a YouTube account, schedule content, and run continuous loops on its cloud infrastructure. Those are the vendor’s product descriptions, not independently measured guarantees. Before choosing any managed service, check supported platforms and formats, storage limits, scheduling, concurrent streams, account permissions, pricing, recovery behavior, and whether you can export or retrieve your files if you leave.

A self-managed VM is the closest EC2 substitute when you need to run an encoder yourself. DigitalOcean offers shared and dedicated Droplet configurations and identifies CPU-optimized Droplets as suitable for workloads such as media streaming. An alternatives overview from DigitalOcean also names Hetzner, Google Cloud, Azure, and Vultr. These are candidates to compare, not proof that a low-cost instance can encode a particular stream continuously.
AWS itself distinguishes EC2’s broad compute flexibility—including GPU instances and multiple purchasing models—from Lightsail’s fixed monthly VPS plans and more limited, preconfigured scope. The same distinction applies when evaluating alternatives: decide whether you want a flexible virtual machine or a simpler fixed-plan VPS, then size it for the actual encoder workload.

Size the encoder, network, and transfer together
YouTube’s encoder-side recommendations describe the feed sent to YouTube, not the capacity your VM needs to produce it. YouTube Help says, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Choose quality that is reliable for the available upload bitrate, test with representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health.
For 1080p60 H.264, YouTube’s published settings list 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as recommended. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. These are YouTube’s published encoder settings as checked on 2026-10-03; the page does not show a publication year. Check the current settings before configuring a stream.
At a constant 6 Mbps, outbound data is approximately 64.8 GB per day or 1,944 GB (about 1.94 TB) over 30 days, using decimal units and excluding protocol overhead. This is a calculation from bitrate and duration, not a provider quote or a statement of billable traffic. Check how each host meters traffic direction, what transfer is included, and what overage costs apply. Include the VM’s region and the upload route to YouTube in your planning.

Compare total cost, not headline entry prices
DigitalOcean’s pricing page lists a smallest Droplet at $4 per month with 512 MiB memory, one vCPU, 500 GiB transfer, and a 10 GiB SSD. That is an entry configuration, not a streaming recommendation. Its CPU-optimized family starts at larger dedicated-CPU sizes and is described as suitable for media streaming. Prices and allowances can change; verify the current pricing page and estimate the specific configuration and region you need.
In a provider comparison published by DigitalOcean in February 2026, entry examples were DigitalOcean Droplets from $4 per month, Azure VMs from $6.13 per month, Google Cloud e2-micro from $6.11 per month, Vultr from $5 per month, and Hetzner from $4.09 per month. These are provider-published comparison figures reported by DigitalOcean, not equivalent configurations, capacity recommendations, or guaranteed current prices. Region and workload affect pricing and features. Google Cloud’s official pricing materials organize VM families and link to e2-micro free-program documentation; use the live pricing tools to estimate a specific setup rather than assuming an entry instance will encode your stream.
Operational work is part of the price
With a self-managed VM, budget time as well as compute and traffic. You are responsible for encoder installation and settings, operating-system updates, security, storage, monitoring, and a restart or recovery plan. Test the chosen VM under the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and motion you intend to send; the available provider information does not establish sustained encoder performance for a particular 24/7 YouTube workload.

Consider a standalone encoder for compatible sources
The AJA HELO Plus is a standalone H.264 hardware encoder listed in YouTube’s encoder catalog. YouTube describes optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. AJA lists encoding up to 1080p60, simultaneous destinations, and PlayToStream as an optional feature for prerecorded programming.
This is a narrower hardware route than a general-purpose VM. Confirm that its input connectors match your source, that 1080p60 meets your needs, and that PlayToStream is available and suitable for your workflow. Check current firmware, product availability, and whether the vendor explicitly supports the continuous duty cycle you require. No current price or continuous-duty guarantee is established here.
Copyright, reused content, and stream health
Keeping a stream online does not grant permission to broadcast its contents or guarantee YouTube monetization. Use only video, music, and other material you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content. Repeating prerecorded content is not, by itself, evidence that a channel meets any monetization policy; assess the content and the channel against the rules that apply to them.
For any setup, test with representative content and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. For a VM, also monitor the encoder process, host resources, and network path, and decide how you will restart or alert on failure. For a managed service or hardware encoder, confirm what its recovery and monitoring features actually cover rather than assuming uninterrupted operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded YouTube content, StreamNeo avoids keeping a computer or home connection on. Upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
