Amazon Luna is an active cloud game-streaming service, and Microsoft says Xbox cloud gaming competes in the same broad market. But the available evidence does not show that Luna has caught or surpassed Microsoft, and it provides no current, comparable market-share figures. Google belongs in the title’s competitive history, but its present role should not be assumed: an authoritative Google source establishing Stadia’s current status or Google’s place as an active direct rival is not established here.
What does Amazon Luna offer?
Luna streams games to compatible devices rather than requiring players to run them on a dedicated gaming PC or console. Amazon and AWS present it as a way to play on devices people may already own, including Fire TV, smart TVs and web browsers. Players still need a supported device and a reliable internet connection; streaming quality and continuity depend on the device, location, network, bandwidth and subscription status.
In an AWS for Games article published September 2, 2026, Amazon described Luna as capable of streaming at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second. That is Amazon’s stated capability, not an independent performance test. Amazon also says its device requirements, catalog and subscription content may vary by location and change over time.
What evidence shows that Amazon is competing with Microsoft?
Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K says Xbox and its cloud-gaming services face competition from online gaming ecosystems and game-streaming services. Its FY2026 Q3 investor materials report that Microsoft “set new records for monthly Xbox active users in the quarter, as well as game streaming hours.” Those records are a company-reported activity signal; the cited materials give no absolute counts and do not establish market share or a lead over Luna.

| Company | Evidence described | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Luna is an active cloud game-streaming service; AWS describes its device access and stated stream capability. | A current product offering, not its customer count, market share or standing against Xbox. |
| Microsoft | Its FY2026 Form 10-K identifies competition in cloud gaming; FY2026 Q3 materials report quarterly records for Xbox monthly active users and streaming hours. | Microsoft says the category is competitive and reports activity, not a comparable share or direct Luna-versus-Xbox result. |
| No authoritative Google source establishing Stadia’s current status or Google’s current role in this market is established here. | Google should not be counted as a confirmed active direct service rival on that basis. |
These disclosures do not support a ranking of the services. A like-for-like comparison would also need current information on catalogs, publisher licensing, subscription access, device support, country availability, stream performance and input options. Current comparable prices and catalogs for Luna and Xbox are not established here, so specific tiers or prices should be checked against each service’s official information before making a purchasing decision.
Is the cloud-gaming market large enough to attract Amazon?
Omdia forecast in 2021 that cloud gaming would generate nearly $12 billion by 2026. That figure is a historical forecast, not a measurement of 2026 revenue or evidence that the projection came true.

AWS’s September 2026 article also cited more than 200 million Prime members when describing Luna’s potential audience. That is an Amazon/AWS company claim about Prime membership, not a count of Luna users, gamers or paying cloud-gaming customers. Neither figure establishes Luna’s market position.
Can you play Luna on Fire TV, and do you need its controller?
A compatible Fire TV device is one route to Luna; AWS’s September 2026 article gives a Fire TV Stick as an example. Device compatibility can change, so check Amazon’s current supported-device information before choosing or buying hardware. Other supported screens include certain smart TVs and web browsers.

The Luna Controller is optional, not a requirement. Amazon identifies it as model T28B69. AWS says the controller can send input directly to the cloud instead of routing it through the display device. Richard Lawrence, AWS Director of Engineering and co-author of the September 2, 2026 article, said: “With a Luna Controller, this path is even faster.” That is an AWS engineering statement, not an independently measured latency result. Other input methods may also be supported.
Where is Luna available?
Amazon’s help page stated that Luna was available in 14 countries as of September 30, 2026. Availability is subject to change; check Amazon’s current country and device information for your location before signing up or planning a setup.

What can game developers and publishers do with Amazon’s streaming technology?
AWS describes Amazon GameLift Streams as the streaming service that powers Luna and invites developers to stream a game catalog through a custom storefront. That is a potential business-to-business route for developers and publishers, not a consumer Luna subscription or evidence of a verified referral or affiliate program.
