Lenovo’s Legion Go S “Powered by SteamOS” model was announced at CES 2025 as the first officially licensed third-party handheld to ship with SteamOS. That means Lenovo shipped an authorized SteamOS configuration with Valve’s support, not that the Go S was the first handheld capable of running SteamOS or another Linux gaming system.
What “first authorized SteamOS handheld” actually means
Lenovo used broader wording at CES 2025, calling the SteamOS Legion Go S the “world’s first officially licensed handheld powered by SteamOS.” Valve used the narrower formulation: Lenovo’s “Powered by SteamOS” model was the first handheld officially licensed to ship with Valve’s SteamOS.
The distinction matters. A handheld may be able to install or boot a Linux-based gaming operating system without being an officially licensed SteamOS product. Valve’s statement concerns a manufacturer-approved device that ships with SteamOS as an official configuration. It does not establish that no other handheld can run SteamOS, nor does it promise official support for every Windows handheld converted by its owner.
Why the Legion Go S qualified
Valve describes SteamOS as “an operating system built by Valve.” It is the gaming-focused PC operating system used on Steam Deck, designed to retain PC flexibility while presenting a console-like gaming experience. Lenovo’s SteamOS Go S materials list access to the Steam Store and Library, cloud saves and Remote Play as platform features.

Valve’s confirmation
In its CES announcement, Valve said the SteamOS Go S was the first handheld officially licensed to ship with SteamOS. Valve also said it was working toward full support for the Go S and that this work could improve SteamOS compatibility with other handhelds.

Which Legion Go S has SteamOS?
Check the operating system at the SKU level rather than assuming every Legion Go S is a SteamOS model. Lenovo’s materials identify Ryzen Z2 Go and Ryzen Z1 Extreme platforms across the Go S family, while the 8ARP1 PSREF lists the Z2 Go with either Windows 11 or SteamOS options. Processor, memory, storage, charger and operating system can vary by market.

Core hardware and connectivity
- Screen: Lenovo lists an 8-inch 1920×1200 WUXGA display. The PSREF specifies 48–120Hz variable refresh.
- Battery: 55.5Wh.
- USB: Two USB-C USB4 ports rated up to 40Gbps, with DisplayPort 1.4 and USB Power Delivery support.
- Expansion: A microSD card reader.
- Audio: A combo audio jack.
- Memory and storage: Up to 32GB soldered memory and M.2 NVMe storage options, depending on SKU.
These specifications make a dock, external display, wired accessories or a microSD card plausible additions, but they do not establish gaming battery life or performance.

Battery-life figure: what the 15.4-hour number does—and does not—say
Lenovo’s PSREF lists a maximum figure of 15.4 hours under its stated local 1080p video-playback test at 150 nits. That is not a gameplay endurance result. Lenovo notes that real battery life varies with configuration, software, wireless activity, power-management settings and screen brightness. Demanding games can therefore produce a materially different result.

Can other handhelds run SteamOS?
Potentially, but capability and authorization are separate questions. Valve said its work supporting the Legion Go S could improve compatibility with other handhelds. That statement points to broader compatibility work; it does not turn every compatible device into an officially licensed SteamOS product.
The evidence establishes official SteamOS shipping support for the Lenovo configuration. It does not establish a universal conversion path that turns a Windows Legion Go S into the officially supported SteamOS edition. If you are buying, select a listing that explicitly names SteamOS rather than assuming the operating system can be changed with the same support status.

Dock
Lenovo lists a Legion Go Dock, and the Go S’s USB4 ports provide DisplayPort output. Before buying a dock, verify physical fit, display outputs, charging power and the ports available on the exact dock model.

Screen protector
Lenovo’s accessory overview names a screen protector. Confirm that the listing specifies Legion Go S fitment; a protector for another Legion model should not be assumed to fit.
microSD card
The PSREF confirms a card reader, so a microSD card is a reasonable storage option. Lenovo’s cited material does not prescribe a particular capacity or speed, so choose according to your library size and the card’s independently documented specifications.
What the “first” claim does not prove
- It does not prove that SteamOS runs on no other handheld.
- It does not guarantee identical hardware or software options in every country.
- It does not provide a frame-rate, battery or game-compatibility benchmark.
- It does not confirm present-day retailer inventory or launch pricing.
- It does not establish that a Windows Go S can be converted into an officially supported SteamOS model.
Bottom line for buyers
The Legion Go S earned the “first” distinction because Lenovo shipped a Valve-licensed SteamOS configuration, and Valve explicitly identified it as the first handheld officially licensed to ship with SteamOS. When shopping, verify the exact SKU’s operating system, processor, memory, storage, charger and region. Treat the 15.4-hour figure as Lenovo’s controlled video-playback maximum—not a promise of gaming runtime—and regard compatibility with other handhelds as an area Valve said it was improving, not as equivalent official licensing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Lenovo Legion Go S the first handheld that can run SteamOS?
No. The supported claim is narrower: it was the first handheld officially licensed to ship with SteamOS. That is different from a device being technically capable of running SteamOS.
Recommended Free Tools
Does every Legion Go S come with SteamOS?
No. Lenovo lists Windows 11 and SteamOS options, and processor and other specifications vary by region. Check the exact SKU and listing.
Can I convert a Windows Legion Go S into the official SteamOS model?
The cited Lenovo and Valve statements do not establish a universal conversion path or the same official support status for a converted Windows unit.
