Amazon is reportedly exploring a roughly $8 billion financing deal involving NVIDIA Grace Blackwell chips already installed in its U.S. data centers. Under the proposal, an investor-funded special-purpose vehicle would hold the hardware and lease it back to Amazon, which could continue using it. The deal has not been reported as completed. Separately, NVIDIA has announced a much broader effort with six financial firms to assemble more than $500 billion in financing for AI infrastructure over time—a target, not a tally of money already raised or spent.
What Amazon is reportedly considering
The Financial Times reported, in a story relayed by Reuters in 2026, that Amazon was exploring a transaction valued at about $8 billion. The proposal concerns thousands of NVIDIA Grace Blackwell chips that are already installed in Amazon data centers. They are enterprise AI accelerators, not consumer graphics cards of the kind sold for gaming PCs.
The reported structure would move the chips into a special-purpose vehicle, or SPV: a separate legal entity set up to hold assets or finance a defined transaction. Outside investors would fund the vehicle, and Amazon would lease the hardware back. Reuters said the vehicle could issue debt and that Amazon might offer investors an equity stake of up to 10%.
That arrangement could change who funds and holds the equipment while leaving Amazon with operational access to it. It is the basis for the “off its books” framing, but the reporting does not establish the final accounting treatment or show that the proposal would achieve any particular balance-sheet or credit-rating result.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Where the chips are
Reuters reported that the chips are installed in more than a dozen data centers across five U.S. states, including Nevada and Virginia. Amazon had bought or leased the equipment. The proposal is therefore about financing installed infrastructure, not Amazon giving up the compute capacity or shipping consumer GPUs to buyers.
How NVIDIA’s separate $500 billion initiative differs
NVIDIA announced a collaboration with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR to assemble more than $500 billion in financing for AI infrastructure over time. NVIDIA described the financing as being offered at attractive rates. Axios reported that the effort could involve dedicated pools of capital.

The announced scale should not be mistaken for $500 billion already committed to specific projects, lent, or deployed. The initiative’s eventual commitments, allocation, and deal terms remain uncertain in the accounts available as of October 3, 2026.
Axios also reported that NVIDIA may provide residual-value support for up to 25% of an opportunity, assessed project by project. That is a possible form of support for equipment value; it is not equivalent to the possible 10% equity stake in Amazon’s proposed SPV.

Why finance AI infrastructure this way?
Large data centers require substantial capital for accelerators and the facilities that run them. A leaseback can let a company retain use of equipment while bringing outside capital into the financing arrangement. NVIDIA’s broader initiative could expand the pool of capital available to build AI infrastructure, including for smaller operators that may struggle to fund projects on hyperscaler-sized balance sheets.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described the rationale as helping customers “access scarce compute at scale,” according to Axios. NVIDIA also has a direct commercial interest in customers adopting its GPUs. CJ Muse, an analyst covering NVIDIA for Cantor Fitzgerald, told Axios that NVIDIA may view the approach as “another competitive moat”: financing could help customers use NVIDIA systems rather than alternatives.

Why investors are wary—and why the reaction is not unanimous
The concern is not simply that companies borrow to build data centers. It is that suppliers, customers, lenders, and the value of the equipment could become more closely linked. If financing helps customers buy infrastructure that relies on the same supplier’s products, critics may ask whether capital is supporting durable demand or reinforcing a cycle of interconnected exposure.
- Demand risk: The returns on new data-center capacity depend on continuing demand for AI computing. If usage or customer spending disappoints, operators could face difficulty earning enough to support their financing.
- Collateral risk: GPU-backed financing relies partly on the future usefulness and resale value of accelerators. Rapid product changes or weaker demand could reduce what the equipment is worth; the coverage describes this as a risk, not a measured loss.
- Interconnected exposure: If a supplier, its customers, financiers, and equipment collateral are tied together, trouble in one part of the network could affect others. The reporting raises this as a concern, not proof that losses are imminent.
- Access to capital: On the other side, financing can help more operators build capacity and compete, rather than leaving expansion solely to the largest cloud companies.
Axios described the immediate market response around NVIDIA’s announcement as mixed: some hyperscalers and competitors fell, while certain financial firms and data-center suppliers rose. That does not support describing Wall Street as having reached a single verdict. Jay Goldberg, an equity analyst covering NVIDIA for Seaport Global Securities, told Axios: “The bull case is there’s infinite demand for AI, and this is going to go on forever.” He added: “Somebody at some point is going to say, ‘Whoa. Wait a minute, what are we doing?’”

What remains unconfirmed
Reuters attributed the Amazon proposal to the Financial Times and people familiar with the matter. It reported that Amazon and NVIDIA did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours. The available reporting does not establish that Amazon proceeded, what final terms would be, or how any transaction would be accounted for. Nor does NVIDIA’s announced target establish how much financing will ultimately be raised or where it will go.
For gamers, the headline is about corporate AI infrastructure finance—not a change to the availability or price of gaming graphics cards. The chips in question are installed data-center accelerators, and the reported deal would be a financing arrangement around that equipment.
