Nintendo Started Developing Switch 2’s GameChat Around 2020—and Tested It on a Switch 1 Prototype

Nintendo says it began developing GameChat around 2020, before Switch 2 hardware was finalized. To test how voice chat and games could work together on a console, the team built a prototype using a specially configured Nintendo Switch development unit. That prototype was not a retail Switch feature: the released GameChat is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.

When did Nintendo start developing GameChat?

Work began around 2020, when Nintendo was considering built-in features for its next console. Switch 2 producer Kouichi Kawamoto asked the team to propose features that could help the successor stand out. Sumikazu Ono, director overseeing development of Switch 2’s built-in features, recalled: “I believe development began around 2020 when we started thinking about what we could do with built-in features in the next hardware.” (Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 17: GameChat — Part 1)

The team’s early idea was a voice-chat feature built into the console, shaped by the image of a “student lounge” where friends could gather to play, watch, or simply spend time together. Ono said, “The concept of the student lounge matched the idea of the built-in voice chat feature the team had in mind.”

What was the Switch 1 GameChat prototype?

Nintendo first tried a PC prototype for voice and video chat alongside games. That helped the team explore the social experience, including sharing game screens, but it could not show how chat and a game would coexist on console hardware. The team then built a prototype on a development machine based on the original Nintendo Switch. (Nintendo Japan, “ゲームチャットが生まれるまで” (“How GameChat Came to Be”))

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The original Switch was not designed to run a game, voice chat, video chat, and screen sharing simultaneously. Nintendo’s English developer interview describes an experimental Switch console with increased memory and an improved CPU; the Japanese employee account adds that the team used development-only resources and a special system configuration. This was a way to test the concept, not a version of GameChat released for consumer Switch consoles.

Technical director Eiji Tokunaga said the first prototype took about six months: “Because both teams had done so much research in advance, the prototype was completed in only six months, give or take.” He added, “However…taking it from prototype to final product took an absolute age.” The estimate describes the prototype phase, not the full development schedule. Why did Nintendo add screen sharing?

Testing suggested that sharing gameplay could make the chat useful even when friends were not playing the same multiplayer game. Nintendo’s developers described using screen sharing to show colleagues a puzzle game they might enjoy, and to let a friend watch and offer help with a puzzle in a single-player game. The feature could make games a shared activity without requiring each game developer to build a separate chat system.

Kawamoto reflected on how the proposal evolved: “Various professionals went through trial and error to achieve the best outcome, and I think it turned out much better than the original proposal I came up with.” (Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 16: Nintendo Switch 2 — Part 3)

What GameChat does on Nintendo Switch 2

GameChat combines voice and video chat with screen sharing and the ability to play together. Nintendo Support says a room can include up to 12 people, while up to four people can share video and/or a game screen at the same time. GameChat works with Switch 2-compatible games; that does not mean every game supports every form of shared play.

GameChat is separate from GameShare. Nintendo says GameShare works only with compatible games that include a special program, so it is not a general way to share any game. (Nintendo Support, GameChat Guide and FAQ; Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 16: Nintendo Switch 2 — Part 3)

Do you need a camera or Nintendo Switch Online?

Voice chat uses the Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in microphone, so a separate microphone is not required. Video chat does require a compatible USB camera. Nintendo sells a Switch 2 Camera separately; other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility. The system settings include a “Test USB Camera” function to check a camera. (Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 17: GameChat — Part 2; Nintendo Support, GameChat Guide and FAQ)

As of October 3, 2026, Nintendo Support lists a Nintendo Switch 2 system, a persistent internet connection, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership as requirements. The temporary Open-Access Period, which allowed GameChat without membership, ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026. Nintendo also notes friend-approval requirements and additional setup and parental-control requirements for accounts belonging to users under 16. Terms and availability may vary by country, so check the support page for the rules that apply to your region.
