Short answer: AMD’s Software: Adrenalin Edition Preview Driver for AFMF 2 was a genuine Windows 10/11 technical-preview driver for AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2, but it is no longer the normal choice for installing the feature. AMD later incorporated AFMF 2 into regular Adrenalin software, beginning with version 24.9.1. Most users should check AMD’s current driver downloads and use a supported stable release instead of the old preview package.
What the AFMF 2 preview driver is
AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 is driver-level frame generation. Adrenalin analyzes rendered frames and creates additional frames between them, allowing compatible games to appear smoother without requiring the game developer to add a frame-generation mode.

That does not mean the game is simulating more frames. Keep these measurements separate:
- Native or rendered FPS: the rate at which the game actually produces frames.
- Displayed FPS: the rate after generated frames are inserted.
- Frame pacing: how consistently those frames arrive.
- Input latency: how quickly controls affect what you see.
AFMF 2 can improve perceived smoothness and the displayed FPS counter, but it cannot turn a poorly performing game into a highly responsive one. Artifacts, uneven pacing, and latency can still be noticeable, especially when the underlying frame rate is low or unstable.

What AFMF 2 added
Broader API support
The preview expanded AFMF beyond DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 to include OpenGL and Vulkan. API support is broad, but it is not a guarantee that every game will have perfect image quality, UI handling, or stability.
High Search Mode
AFMF 2 introduced a High Search Mode intended to improve consistency during fast movement. It is enabled by default at 2560×1440 and higher. You can adjust Search Mode from the advanced HYPR-RX controls where the option is available.

Performance Mode reduces the overhead of frame generation. AMD set it as the default for integrated graphics, while Quality Mode is the default for discrete GPUs. Owners of discrete cards can select Performance Mode manually when they are GPU-limited and prefer lower processing overhead.
Hybrid-graphics handling
On some laptops, one GPU renders the game while another drives the display. AFMF 2 is designed to have the display-driving GPU perform frame generation while the rendering GPU concentrates on the game. Actual behavior depends on the laptop’s graphics-switching and mux configuration.
Supported hardware and operating systems
The preview release notes list the following compatibility categories. Exact Windows support can vary by product, so confirm the individual GPU and driver page before installing.

Integrated graphics
The feature-level compatibility statement includes AMD Radeon 700M and 800M integrated graphics. This is not a blanket statement that every Ryzen integrated GPU is supported; check the exact processor and OEM configuration.
Windows and handhelds
The preview package targeted 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. AMD’s notes also state that the generic Adrenalin package does not include support for handheld gaming devices. Handheld owners should use the device maker’s customized driver package rather than this desktop/mobile preview installer.
Is the AFMF 2 preview driver still worth installing?
Usually, no. AMD later documented AFMF 2 in the regular Adrenalin 24.9.1 release. That release used package version 24.20.11.01 but a newer Windows Driver Store version, 32.0.12011.1036. The preview download may still be exposed on AMD’s release-notes page, but availability is not the same as current support or recommendation.
Check AMD’s driver-support page for a current Adrenalin release. Do not assume 24.9.1 is the latest driver in 2026, and do not install the old preview merely because its package name resembles a later stable release.

How to enable AFMF 2
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Enable AFMF 2 through HYPR-RX or the AMD Fluid Motion 2 toggle.
- Launch a compatible game.
- Press Alt+R to open the Adrenalin in-game overlay and check AFMF status.
- Use the Performance Metrics Overlay to compare the native experience with the AFMF-enabled displayed FPS.
For manual tuning, open the advanced HYPR-RX view and adjust Search Mode and the Performance Mode preset where those controls are available. AFMF can also be used through per-game Adrenalin profiles rather than only as a global setting.
Required game and display settings
AMD’s preview documentation specifies these requirements:
- Use exclusive fullscreen or borderless fullscreen.
- Disable V-SYNC.
- Use a variable-refresh-rate display when possible.
Radeon Chill can be enabled after AFMF to apply an FPS cap intended to reduce tearing. A fixed-refresh monitor, a game that forces V-SYNC, or software that changes presentation behavior can make the result less consistent.
Recommended Free Tools
These requirements can conflict with windowed play, streaming and capture software, frequent alt-tab use, and games with heavy camera or UI motion. Test with the exact display mode and overlays you normally use.
Performance, latency, and image quality
There is no universal AMD-certified minimum base FPS in the preview release notes. The practical rule is to begin with a reasonably stable rendered frame rate. AFMF 2 is a presentation technology, not a replacement for sufficient GPU performance.
A useful test is to record three results separately:

- Your subjective control response, frame pacing, and artifact level.
Fast camera movement, transparent effects, character outlines, HUD elements, and abrupt scene changes can expose interpolation artifacts. A higher displayed FPS can coexist with the latency of the lower native render rate, so the feature may be attractive for single-player games while being less suitable for competitive play.

| Criterion | AFMF 2 | Game-integrated frame generation |
|---|---|---|
| Integration | Driver-level; generally does not require developer support. | Requires implementation by the game developer. |
| Coverage | Targets supported games using OpenGL, Vulkan, DX11, or DX12. | Depends on the individual game, engine, hardware, and API. |
| Motion data | Works from outside the game engine and may have less title-specific context. | The engine can provide motion vectors and UI information directly. |
| Artifacts and UI handling | Can vary substantially by game and scene. | May be more deeply tuned to the particular game. |
| Controls | Adrenalin global or per-game settings. | Game-specific settings and implementation. |
FSR 2 is primarily an upscaling technology and requires developer integration. FSR-based frame generation is also game-integrated. AFMF 2 does not require FSR 2, although AMD’s performance examples often pair the technologies. Neither approach is universally better: native game integration may provide better game-specific data, while AFMF 2 offers broader driver-level availability.
Troubleshooting common problems
AFMF becomes inactive
Some overlays, task switching, or presentation changes can deactivate AFMF. Disable Xbox Game Bar, recording tools, performance overlays, and third-party overlays one at a time, then relaunch the game. Alt-tab behavior has varied between builds.
The metrics overlay shows “N/A”
The preview notes document intermittent “N/A” reporting after task switching. Restarting the game or Adrenalin overlay may restore metrics. Treat the displayed counter as a diagnostic aid, not proof of improved responsiveness.
Driver timeout or game crash
AMD documented issues involving certain Vulkan games, Xbox Game Bar, AFMF 2 with RSR, Baldur’s Gate 3 on some Ryzen AI 300 systems, and later issues involving games such as DayZ and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The 24.9.1 notes mention a temporary Variable Graphics Memory mitigation for the Space Marine 2 problem. A current driver may contain different fixes, so consult its release notes before changing settings.

The laptop behaves incorrectly
Install the OEM driver if the generic package disrupts power management, display switching, hotkeys, the mux, or other vendor features. On hybrid systems, verify which GPU drives the display; that relationship affects AFMF behavior.
Performance is smoother but controls feel slow
Compare native FPS, displayed FPS, and input response. Lower the game’s rendering workload or use a stable frame cap before relying on AFMF. For latency-sensitive games, disable AFMF if the added smoothness does not justify the control feel.
AFMF 2, hardware purchases, and alternatives
AFMF 2 and Adrenalin are free software. Do not buy a GPU solely for the old preview driver. Choose hardware based on native performance, VRAM, game support, display technology, driver support, and price; treat AFMF 2 as an additional feature.

Final verdict
The AFMF 2 preview driver was an important early release: it expanded driver-level frame generation to OpenGL and Vulkan, added search and performance controls, and improved hybrid-graphics support. But it is now mainly a historical troubleshooting reference. For normal use, install a current compatible Adrenalin release, enable AFMF 2 through HYPR-RX or the Fluid Motion setting, and judge it using native FPS, displayed FPS, latency, pacing, and image quality—not the largest number shown by an FPS counter.
