AMD’s Ryzen 9000 gaming benchmarks looked stronger than many launch reviews because AMD tested from an Administrator account, which enabled an AMD-specific branch-prediction optimization that ordinary Windows users did not receive. On August 21, 2024, AMD acknowledged the methodology difference, revised its gaming claims, and outlined software changes for Ryzen 9000—and for some older Zen 3 and Zen 4 processors.
The explanation does not turn Ryzen 9000 into a universally faster gaming CPU. Results still depend on the game, Windows version, memory, BIOS, power settings, Virtualization-Based Security (VBS), graphics card, and whether the test is CPU-limited. A separate chipset-driver core-parking problem could also complicate testing on some dual-CCD processors.
For Ryzen gaming performance questions, Outbyte Driver Updater can compare installed chipset and graphics drivers with recommended official versions.

The short version
- AMD’s launch testing used an Administrator account, unlike the standard accounts used by many reviewers and buyers.
- AMD said that account exposed branch-prediction behavior that was unavailable to ordinary Windows users.
- The relevant optimization arrived in Windows 11 24H2 and was backported to Windows 11 23H2 through optional update KB5041587, released in preview form on August 27, 2024.
- The change applies to Zen 5 Ryzen 9000, Zen 4 Ryzen 7000, and Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 processors, but gains vary by workload.
- AMD revised its gaming position from a claimed lead over Intel to gaming parity under specified optimized conditions.
- A separate core-parking issue in AMD’s chipset software affected some dual-CCD CPUs and could leave old behavior behind after a processor swap.
AMD’s original clarification is available in its Ryzen 9000 Series Community Update.
What AMD changed in its claims
AMD’s original internal data claimed a 9% average 1080p gaming improvement over Ryzen 7000 and approximately a 6% advantage over competing Intel processors. After investigating the gap between those figures and independent reviews, AMD revised the comparison.

| Comparison | AMD’s revised position |
|---|---|
| Ryzen 9000 versus Ryzen 7000 in gaming | 5–8% improvement |
| Ryzen 9000 versus Intel in gaming | Parity under AMD’s optimized test conditions |
| Ryzen 9000 productivity and creative workloads | About 10% generational improvement |
| Ryzen 9000 AI workloads | About 25% generational improvement |
| Selected branch-prediction examples | 0–13%, depending on the workload |
These are AMD’s claims or projections, not guarantees for every game or independent test system. AMD’s revised Intel comparison used factors including faster DDR5-7200 memory, an aggressive power-delivery profile, optimized settings, and Windows 11 24H2. That is materially different from a comparison in which both platforms use conservative defaults.
Why the Administrator account mattered
AMD said its automated launch testing ran under an Administrator profile. According to the company, that account allowed Windows to use AMD-specific branch-prediction optimizations that were not active for a standard user account.

When those predictions are correct, the CPU spends less time waiting and can execute code more efficiently. The Windows behavior at issue was not simply a secret gaming mode, and it did not mean Ryzen 9000 was operating at a different advertised clock speed. It was an operating-system and processor interaction that could affect particular software paths.
The size of the difference was inconsistent. In one independent test set cited by PCWorld, Administrator-account testing produced approximately a 3.8% change on Zen 5 and 2.8% on Zen 4. AMD’s selected examples showed larger differences in some games.
Do not use a permanent Administrator account as the solution. Running games elevated can increase the consequences of a compromised game, mod, launcher, or other process. An Administrator-account comparison may help diagnose this historical issue, but it is not a recommended everyday configuration.

Windows 11 24H2 and the 23H2 backport
AMD’s fix was not limited to Windows 11 24H2. The branch-prediction optimization was backported to Windows 11 23H2 through optional cumulative update KB5041587. TechPowerUp reported that the update covered Zen 3, Zen 4, and Zen 5.
On a Windows 11 23H2 installation, the contemporary installation path was:
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Look for Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5041587).
- Install it and restart Windows.
Because later cumulative updates can supersede preview packages, KB5041587 may not appear on a fully updated system. Its absence does not necessarily indicate a missing fix. Check your Windows version and installed update history before troubleshooting further.
Windows updates do not promise a universal FPS increase. The change is most visible in CPU-limited workloads, especially at lower resolutions. A system limited by its graphics card at 1440p or 4K may show little or no measurable difference.
AMD’s selected game results show why averages are insufficient
AMD’s examples for the Ryzen 9 9950X varied substantially:

Why reviews still disagreed
The Administrator-account issue was important, but it was only one variable. AMD’s original game mix also leaned toward older or less CPU-limited titles. Its revised suite added newer games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Hitman 3, Far Cry 6, Starfield CPU testing, Red Dead Redemption 2, Total War: Warhammer 3, Doom Eternal, and Counter-Strike 2, along with games without built-in benchmarks.
Other variables included:
- Memory: AMD’s revised Intel testing used faster DDR5-7200 memory. Memory speed and timings can change CPU rankings.
- Power settings: Intel systems were initially tested conservatively because of 13th- and 14th-generation stability concerns. AMD later used a more aggressive power-delivery profile.
- VBS: Virtualization-Based Security can affect gaming performance and relative CPU rankings. Tom’s Hardware measured an approximately 5% reduction with VBS in its testing, while noting that the effect varies.
- BIOS and firmware: BIOS defaults, microcode, memory training, Precision Boost Overdrive, and power limits can all alter results.
- Test scenes: A built-in benchmark may produce a different ranking from a repeatable custom gameplay route.
- Graphics settings: High-resolution testing can become GPU-limited and conceal CPU differences that appear at 720p or 1080p.
VBS is a security feature, not merely unwanted performance overhead. Disabling it may improve a benchmark result, but it also reduces some protections. A fair AMD-versus-Intel comparison should use the same VBS state on both systems and disclose that state. AMD’s own broader guidance notes that performance varies with the game engine, CPU architecture, GPU, memory, and operating-system configuration; see its Performance Characteristics FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The separate chipset-driver core-parking issue
AMD also acknowledged a problem involving its chipset-driver core-parking mechanism on some dual-CCD processors, including the Ryzen 9 9950X and certain Ryzen 7000 X3D models.
Recommended Free Tools
Core parking is intended to temporarily keep selected cores inactive when an application benefits from concentrating work on stronger or preferred cores. The reported problem was that, after a CPU using this mechanism was installed, changing to another processor could leave the old core-parking behavior behind. That created a risk of contaminated CPU-swap testing and potentially lower performance on the replacement processor.

Tom’s Hardware reported that the behavior could not always be cleanly removed through normal Windows configuration and that a complete Windows reinstall was the known reliable remedy at the time. This was not a universal requirement for every CPU upgrade, nor does the available evidence prove that it caused all disappointing Ryzen 9000 reviews.
AMD said a correction was in development, but the reviewed material does not establish a definitive final chipset-driver version or release date that completely resolved the issue. For drivers, use the official AMD Drivers and Support page or the motherboard manufacturer’s support page rather than a third-party driver updater.
What Ryzen owners should do
- Install normal Windows updates. Do this before changing security settings or creating an Administrator account.
- Check the Windows build. If you are on Windows 11 23H2, look under Optional updates for KB5041587 or a later cumulative update that supersedes it.
- Restart the PC. Do not judge the change until Windows has completed the restart.
- Install the appropriate chipset package. Identify the motherboard chipset and download the package from AMD or the board maker. Do not assume every chipset-driver issue has a verified final fix based only on the historical reports.
- Check BIOS settings. Record memory speed, timings, PBO, power limits, Resizable BAR, and other settings before retesting.
- Repeat the same test. Use the same game version, save, scene, resolution, graphics preset, GPU, memory configuration, background applications, and VBS state.
- Record more than average FPS. Capture average FPS, 1% lows, and frame-time behavior across multiple runs.
If performance falls after swapping between a dual-CCD Ryzen processor and another CPU, investigate chipset-driver state, BIOS defaults, Windows power configuration, and core-parking behavior. If the old behavior appears persistent, a clean Windows installation was the reported reliable remedy in the contemporary investigation—but it should not be treated as mandatory for every user.
What prospective buyers should believe
Ryzen 9000’s launch results were affected by a real Windows-account and branch-prediction mismatch, and the resulting update was real. It could produce meaningful gains in selected CPU-limited games, including AMD’s reported 13% example in Far Cry 6. But the update did not universally transform Ryzen 9000 into the fastest gaming platform.
For a new build, compare current independent results using the same Windows build, BIOS policies, memory settings, VBS state, and game versions. Gaming-first buyers should also compare Ryzen 9000 non-X3D processors with AMD’s X3D models and Intel alternatives. Productivity, creator, and AI workloads may make the broader Zen 5 gains more relevant than gaming averages.
Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 5000 owners should also remember that the Windows optimization was not exclusive to Ryzen 9000. A software update may improve a supported Zen 3 or Zen 4 system without requiring a CPU upgrade, although the size of any benefit depends on the workload.
