If your handheld cannot use AMD’s ML-based FSR Upscaling, first check the game for FSR 3 or 3.1. If it has no in-game upscaler, Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) may be available on a supported AMD Windows handheld; Intel XeSS is another option only in games that integrate it and on devices that meet the game’s requirements. None is a universal, identical replacement.
Can my handheld run FSR 4?
AMD now refers to its machine-learning upscaler as AMD FSR Upscaling with ML Technologies, part of the FSR Redstone family. AMD says it is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards, with RX 6000 Series graphics support planned to launch in 2027. That future plan is not confirmation of support on handheld APUs.

The GPUOpen SDK documentation is more specific about an important handheld distinction: its FSR Upscaling 4 requirements name RX 9000 or RX 7000 Series discrete GPUs or better, and say other hardware automatically selects FSR 3.1.5. The June 2026 SDK release added FSR Upscaling 4.1 for RX 7000 Series discrete GPUs. A handheld using AMD graphics does not qualify automatically because its APU uses AMD or RDNA-family technology. Check the exact model, game, and software path rather than relying on the “AMD” name alone. AMD GPUOpen’s FSR Upscaling documentation describes the SDK requirements and fallback behavior.

AMD says FSR Upscaling can be built into a title or enabled through AMD Software DLL swapping in games with FSR 3.1 or higher. Which alternative should I try first?
| Option | How it is enabled | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FSR 3 or 3.1 | In the game, if its developers integrated it | Look in the game’s display or graphics settings; test the available quality presets. |
| Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) | At driver level, on supported AMD hardware and software | Confirm your current driver/control software exposes RSR; run the game below the display’s native resolution. |
| Intel XeSS Super Resolution | In a game that integrates XeSS | Check that specific game’s menu and its current hardware/API requirements. |
| Lower render resolution and graphics settings | In the game | Compare clarity, frame pacing, power use, and input latency on your device. |
Use FSR 3 or 3.1 in the game when available
This is usually the first fallback to look for because it is an in-game upscaling option. FSR versions are integrated by game developers, so availability varies by title. FSR 3/3.1 is not the same technology as AMD’s newer ML-based FSR Upscaling.
AMD’s support matrix distinguishes upscaling from frame generation. For FSR 3, it lists upscaling from RX 590 graphics and frame generation from RX 5000 graphics; these discrete-card thresholds do not guarantee performance on a handheld. Start with the game’s Quality or Balanced preset if offered, then judge the result in motion and in the scenes you play. AMD describes FSR Upscaling as improving on FSR 3.1 in ghosting, particle preservation, fine detail, and temporal stability; those are AMD’s stated benefits, not a matched handheld comparison. See AMD’s FSR compatibility and feature information and GPUOpen’s technical overview.

Can I use RSR if a game has no FSR?
Possibly, if your AMD handheld and its current Windows driver software support Radeon Super Resolution. RSR works at driver level rather than adding a game-specific upscaler. ASUS describes it as using the same algorithm found in AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution and illustrates lowering a game’s resolution—for example, to 720p on a 1080p display—so the driver scales the output to the display.

RSR does not add the game-specific temporal inputs used by an integrated upscaler, and it should not be called FSR 4. The exact control path can depend on the device and installed software, so check the current driver/control application for an RSR option. ASUS says RSR does not affect games configured to run at native 1080p. Its ROG Ally Series FAQ explains the driver-level behavior. ASUS lists RSR among the features of the ROG Ally X (2024); that device-specific listing is not proof that every handheld APU supports ML-based FSR Upscaling.

Can an AMD handheld use Intel XeSS?
It can in some cases. Intel’s XeSS Super Resolution developer guide describes a cross-vendor implementation, but the game must integrate XeSS and the hardware/API combination must meet that title’s requirements. There is no universal system switch that adds XeSS to games that do not include it. Check the game’s own settings and Intel’s changing XeSS-enabled games list; consult the XeSS Super Resolution Developer Guide for implementation requirements.

Lower the internal render resolution or reduce demanding graphics settings. A lower render resolution can improve performance, but it also reduces image clarity; the best trade-off depends on the game, display, and handheld. Change a setting, then assess image detail and stability as well as frame pacing, power or battery behavior, and input latency.

Keep frame generation separate from upscaling when choosing settings. Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames; it does not mean the game is rendering more base frames or responding to input faster. AMD lists FSR frame generation separately from upscaling and also separates FSR Redstone frame generation in its feature information. Consider perceived smoothness alongside the base frame rate and latency.

How to choose on your specific handheld
- Identify the exact setup. Note the handheld model, operating system, game, and driver/software version. Features listed for one model or OS do not establish support across all handhelds.
- Check the game’s settings. Look for FSR 3/3.1 or XeSS under display or graphics options. Use an in-game upscaler only if the title offers it.
- If no in-game upscaler is available, check driver options. On a supported AMD Windows handheld, see whether current software exposes RSR. Set the game below the display resolution for driver scaling.
- Compare the result in play. Evaluate image clarity and stability, frame pacing, power/battery behavior, and input latency—not just the displayed frame count.
Device-specific feature names matter. For example, Lenovo lists FSR-related scaling and sharpening options for SteamOS Legion Go S models, but that listing does not establish FSR 4 support or apply to every handheld running SteamOS or Windows. See Lenovo’s Legion Go S Gen 1 product information. No option can be called the universal winner without a comparison on the same handheld, game, settings, and power profile.
